Culture and Commitment- Brush, Ink and Seal
Traditional writing and drawing media play an important role in
Chinese cultural heritage, as they are essential for transmitting
traditional Chinese characters, arts and thoughts.
Precious ornaments, such as metals or rare gems, are items
that are treated as family heirlooms, being passed from one
generation to the next. This concept is as significant as the tra-
ditional writing and drawing media of Chinese cultural heritage.
For a long time, the ring has been a significant symbol in the
institution of marriage. Therefore, in this series of my work, the
ring symbolises responsibility and commitment. Combining
calligraphy, painting utensils and the ring not only indicates the
relationship between ornaments and appliances, but also repre-
sents the integration of culture and commitment.
While wearing the Culture and Commitment, I hope that my
work in this series conveys another implication of enabling view-
ers to interact with it.
Chinese culture is ubiquitous. When we travel to every corner
of the world and communicate with different people, we will find
that Chinese culture is not only omnipresent, but also deeply in-
tegrated into our lives. The stains and markings that come with
wearing the Culture and Commitment piece symbolise the in-
fluences of this everlasting and elegant culture on Chinese
people as well as on the world.

Series2UntitledThis series of work explores the relationship between humans and jewellery
design. Is jewellery design a token of channelling emotions? Is it blindly driven by
pop culture? Or is it an outlet for expressing personal characteristics? What are
the true motives of jewellery design? Is it simply determined by the objective of
creating visually pleasing pieces, formed by the combination of precious and rare
gems? Is it merely a slave to fashion trends? Do many years of trained craftsman-
ship automatically render oneself a master in this art? Or do the stories spun by
advertisers, advertisers, which accompany most jewellery commercials, suffice as the main el-
ement of jewellery design? If good jewellery means sellable jewellery, then should
jewellery design be considered as an act disguised by intents of marketing for
businessmen, or as a medium for conveying the ideas of artists?
For me, the work in this series is an experiment, as I hope to explore the rela-
tionship between jewellery and humans. The work in this series will be combined
with scenes of everyday life, so that people can discover them unwittingly and
then interact with them.
Mirror projects ones self in the reflection as well as from ones fantasy. Sculp-
tured jewels in the mirror represent the images of precious jewellery. To some
people, jewellery design means nothing, as long as it pleases their eyes and can
be worn comfortably. The glittering characteristics of gems featured in my work
are presented in the form of multicolour LED lights, which is a way of attracting the
attention of others, much like the enjoyment of vanity when wearing jewellery.
In this experiment, you can imagine in daily life when people see a necklace
in a mirror and try to wear that necklace seen in the mirror imaginatively and at the
same time adjust it with the body. Even when people understand that necklace is
not real, they will still wear it instinctively. Are such reactions innate or influenced
by environment and education? Are people wearing jewellery self-narcissists? Or
are their intentions fuelled by the desire to attract the attention of others? Does
wearing jewellery enhance ones beauty? Or is ones beauty unfortunately over-
shadowed by jewellery?shadowed by jewellery?

Series3Social Relations
This series explores the relationship between individuals and groups, as well as
whether human encounters are predetermined or coincidences.
I like to collect antique jewellery from various times and regions and also
modify them for creative transformations. In my creative processes, I would
carefully observe each element of jewellery by exploring their experiences and
imagining the story behind them.
I think every jewel is like an individual; it carries marks of what it has experi-
enced. I like a certain quotation from a film that I saw: our experiences shape
the kind of adult we become. Just like the etching on the ornaments, some lack
a few gems and some gilds have faded colours. However, it is these precious
flaws that make them more unique and attractive.
In my work, each jewel part has been collected from various sources and I
have transformed them in a single piece of jewellery. The coexistence of conflict
and harmony stemming from their togetherness brings even more unique
beauty. Just as people of different backgrounds and environments with different
ideas meet at a predetermined or coincidental point in time and work hard to-
wards the same thing. Leaving aside the philosophy of determinism, this en-
counter itself is a wonderful thing.
11
I again perform an overall
creative task with each piece
of my works and parts of jew-
ellery that I have collected
and temporarily place them
firmly on a life-size stand-up.
All pieces of jewellery symb-
olise various situations and
characteristics of human en-
counters. The loose way of
placing them tightly on the
stand-up is an expression of
uncertainty in human rela-
tionships.
The components which have been unified to created the above pieces of jewellery are an-tique pieces, which I myself have personally collected.

==
Each piece of jewerly has its own story and personality.
Each encounter is like a story of serendipity.
