The words of a popular gospel song comes to mind when I think about the gift of my life and all the things that it validates; Silver and Gold, I’d rather have Jesus than silver and gold. I understand the writer to say that Jesus isn’t expendable, and can’t be used to purchase commodities or gain prominence. The love of God and His favor is worth more than any earthly possession. As if they’re proclaiming the luster of Christ is unmatched and all perpetrators are unequivocal to His capabilities. In agreement, I change the wording by saying “I would rather be blessed than to be lucky”.

The extremes of luck, both good and bad is determined by its recipient. Luck has no origin, has no face, nor voice. It promises nothing because it can’t be summoned. Luck isn’t attached to anything. We say someone is lucky when they win the lottery or when the survive close calls of adversity. We say someone is unlucky when they fail and succumb to challenging circumstances. If so, what are we when we give all that we’re made of to someone or something with great expectations, but come up empty? Close but no victory, yet determined but unsure. Most would conclude that we’ve had an encounter with luck, good or bad.

On the other hand, I confess that my blessings flow from one place. When things get out of order in my life, I don’t resort to wishful thinking. I seek the one source who has proven to be effective in every arena. I praise God during the good and bad times and acknowledge His hand in my ordeals. I don’t hope for ideal outcomes but instead I pray for His will.

God’s will calms troubled waters and heals a broken heart. His will has allowed me an opportunity to understand the difference between being lucky and being blessed. I am able to walk because God wants me to showcase His work away from my home. I am able to see with my eyes because God is working on someone else and requires me to view his manifestation.

This is a strategy that ignites a growth in my faith in Him. I’m blessed with patience for the moments when I want to move and do it my way. Correctively, He pumps my brakes and controls my progression. I am soon reminded of how far troubled I was when I first accepted God. He allowed me to realize the resources I naturally possessed. His love has taught me that I’m not lucky, but I am blessed!

Guiding Light Ministries Baptist Church will soon have a new home. On May 22, 2010 fresh ground was broken at 1103 Nealtown Road in Greensboro. In attendance were former

Greensboro Mayor Yvonne Johnson, Pastor Cardes Brown of New Light Baptist Church, and Bishop George W. Brooks of Mount Zion Baptist Church, both in Greensboro.

Lead by Dr. Eva L. Ratliff, Guiding Light has experienced growth and desired a new facility to accommodate their needs. Their existing facility located at 1601 E. Bessemer Avenue at has allowed them to save souls and do God’s work by serving their community.

Dr. Ratliff is a lifelong member of St. James Baptist

Church where she served on the ministerial staff and received pastoral training under the tutelage of Dr. Prince E. Graves.

GLM started in 2005 at the Landmark Inn in Greensboro and moved to the Wesley Foundation on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University before moving to Bessemer Ave. In the beginning there were only about seven members, but GLM congregation now has well over a hundred.

Attempting to meet the needs of individuals, GLM offers several ministries included an outreach ministry will focuses on the community, a dance ministry, youth ministry, and more. With the recent purchase of their first van, GLM is capable of transporting members to and from church.

No official date has been set to open their new facility but in the meantime preparations are being made to take God’s message to even more parts of Greensboro.

One in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and most cases are never reported to the police. If you’re unsure what exactly domestic violence is, it is physical and verbal abuse from an intimate partner against another. Domestic violence is an epidemic that affects every individual in every community regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality and educational background. This epidemic results in a lifetime of traumatic experiences or death. Women

have the power to make the decision to become educated about domestic violence and learn when to leave a relationship.

Portia Shipman, founder of the Sherri Denese Jackson Foundation for the Prevention of Domestic Violence has been educating women about domestic violence through the story of Sherri Denese Jackson. The foundation wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the story of this young woman’s life that impacted the community and started a movement in Shipman.

Sherri Jackson was a good friend of Portia Shipman. She was a beautiful young woman with a great life ahead of her. Jackson was involved in a domestic violence relationship for eight months and did the right things of notifying the police and obtaining a protective order. On November 29, 2006, she was reported missing by her family. On June 28, 2008 her ex-boyfriend took a plea bargain for 13 years for her murder and her remains were found.

Shipman recalls during the final days of the trial, remembering Jackson’s mother turning to her and asking what could be done to prevent women and their mothers to not go through this. At that moment, the Sherri Denese Jackson

Foundation was birthed through the pain and lost of a daughter and friend. The foundation is a domestic violence center that educates women through workshops, support groups, and victim services. Shipman and her team represent women in court during trial to help them obtain protective orders. Most importantly, the foundation builds self esteem in all women of different ages going into classrooms, churches, organizations teaching about the awareness of domestic violence. Every Wednesday the foundation host “Women Empowering Young Women” workshops at Gabriel’s in Greensboro from 7pm-8:30pm.

In the future, Shipman plans to apply for more grant funding to increase the awareness about Jackson’s story and go on a national tour with the Sherri Denese Jackson Domestic Violence Exhibit. Also, she plans to model her organization after the Safe on Seven program in Winston Salem, as a one stop shop for domestic violence victims that will have family services, shelters, legal aide, police officers, clerk of courts and social service.

From Homeless To Officially Greensboro’s

espite owning and operating a successful and thriving business, Roderick Sebastian Todd of Sebastian’s Dessertery found himself homeless. It is difficult to appreciate the irony involved in Sebastian’s predicament. How could it be possible to fulfill a steady stream of cake orders by day yet deal with displacement by night? The question begs to be asked, what type

of strain does such a conundrum place on the psyche? Understandably, the highly sought after cake designer was physically, emotionally and spiritually drained and in despair.

“Never thinking or ever imagining being forced or placed in that type of situation, I was not physically, emotionally or spiritually prepared for the magnitude of even how it would take place,” says Sebastian. “We became homeless in a way that was absolutely unimaginable.” Although Sebastian and his wife Emily, whom he credits as his inspiration, were stable homeowners, they were convinced to move their entire family and cake business in with a dear family member who among other issues was struggling to deal with the death of a loved one and suffering from serious health issues. Not even in his wildest dreams could Sebastian describe the amount of turmoil and difficulty he and his family would endure throughout the days and months that were to come. Basically set-up and abandoned, the Todd family would ultimately be put out of the place they had just agreed to call home for the sake of caring for someone else. The heart-wrenching episode was magnified when he and his family were taunted by those whose same blood ran through his veins ― his family. Sebastian says they showed total disregard for his family, including his children and his business. All the cake products that were used for the business were thrown onto the street. Sebastian was perplexed. He recalls his family’s haunting taunts, screaming, “We don’t care about you, your family or your cakes,” which he vividly remembers to this day. What had he done to deserve such treatment? “We were devastated! We were treated as if we had caused the problems when we were only there to help,” Sebastian exclaims. “I went through many different emotions, emotions going back and forth like a roller coaster, but the worst feeling was we did not understand why; when you have caused no harm. deal with the pain, but I deal with it better as each day passes and as God slowly heals every wounded area” During this time in their lives, Sebastian admits life was difficult. Living in and out of a car and different motels throughout the city was not what he and his wife had in mind for themselves and their children. “Sometimes I look back and wonder how we actually made it. We go back to motels and lodges we had lived in during those months just to reflect back to see how God has been so faithful,” says Sebastian. They had a home and a thriving business. How could things have spiraled out of control so easily? Through it all they were determined to maintain the business. Contracts needed to be fulfilled and cake orders were steadily pouring in. Todd and his wife even continued to give cakes away to different organizations. The fact of the matter was they could not afford to give up. Nevertheless, there were times when Todd concedes he had doubts. “I have to be honest…yes my faith did falter, felt like killing myself, blamed myself, but this is when you know you’ve been blessed by God to be married to a woman who knows how to be a wife. She kept me lifted, told me I was a good man, helped me to reaffirm my faith and kept telling me you’re going to be ok. Seeing this was letting me know that God had never left me or my family,” says Sebastian. More importantly, Todd knew if he remained steadfast with the business that God would be faithful concerning everything else. Although Sebastian vividly remembers those trying times, nowadays his hectic work schedule rarely allows time to reflect. Previously, Sebastian’s Dessertery was operated solely out of their home, but the demand for his delicious creations have warranted him to open a full time dessertery. Clients come from all across the country; from California, New York to Florida and even around the world. The highly sought after dessertery constantly receives requests from all over the world asking if they ship their cakes. Customers from as far as London, England, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria continuously bombard Sebastian’s email and Facebook inboxes wanting to discuss shipping options! Accordingly, one of his

goals, as God makes provision, is to one day be able to ship cakes globally making the company truly international. When people visit North Carolina they make sure they use Sebastian’s Dessertery for their events. Presumably he could be touted as the Top Chef of the cake world, but in reality he has been named “Greensboro’s Cake Boss,” by another prominent national magazine. After interviewing with Skirt Magazine, the consensus was in and Sebastian had been crowned with the prestigious title. Not only does Sebastian specialize in custom carvings and gourmet cakes, but he works extensively with caterers all around North Carolina. One of his proudest accomplishments is beating out other local bakeries and landing a continuous contract with Aramark Catering - one of the largest caterers in the United States - as their sole contract bakery for the North Carolina division. Sebastian’s Dessertery provides desserts and cakes for Aramark’s 5000+ employees and counting. Although Sebastian has always been aware and appreciative of the gift God has given him to create magnificent masterpieces of pastry and cakes, a select few have not always been as supportive. Todd has learned firsthand that some people are willing to allow you in the kitchen to produce the culinary masterpiece, but they would rather have it showcased by someone else. “We constantly have to

prove ourselves beyond the shadow of a doubt that we are even remotely capable of performing on a professional level in regards to the culinary field,” Sebastian says of the challenges he faces in the business as a black man. The constant need to prove himself as a legitimate chef is a continual uphill climb for Sebastian as he says it is for other minorities; most of whom have to not only measure up to the bar but must emphatically supersede it. He admits fellow chefs have embraced him as much or as little as he has expected, but it usually leads to the same old “crabs in a bucket” syndrome. Once others realized his talents and could not deny his gift they would attempt to deny him valuable information in hopes of preventing his excellence in the field. Nevertheless, the covert and indiscreet attempts to overlook the no longer up-in-coming, but flourishing dessertery, have not only failed but have encouraged his patrons to rally behind him even more. Everything he has been through has in some way contributed to the dessertery’s success. From the patience and integrity he learned throughout the homelessness ordeal to the exposure he received during his 14 year tenure as an on-air personality on 90.1 FM WNAA. Even the widespread interaction he has with over 5000 friends, patrons and fans through the gigantic social medium, Facebook by the way he so graciously appreciates.

“I believe trying to explain my level of gratitude to the many individuals who have helped us by staying with us is unexplainable,” he says. “In addition we sincerely thank the many that have decided to walk away, but above all, and in all honesty we cannot thank anyone not even ourselves or any sacrifices that we have made because we understand fully and without question that it was only God and His mercy to fulfill this purpose within our lives. We still live and thrive because his purpose is not yet complete. Therefore, we thank God most unashamedly, for the Word of God exclaims, ‘not by works, lest any man should boast’.”

uite often when someone wants to memorialize a family member or loved one, they will have a portrait of them tatooted on their bodies or printed on a t-shirt. Artist Joy M. Wilson of Columbia, S.C., believes when a portrait is painted of loved ones they will last a lifetime and can be passed along to generations, forever. Her art form is Realism ― specializing in oil paintings ― and with every stroke of her brush,

she attempts to reach into the depths of her subject and bring that passion or emotion to canvas.

Currently residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, Wilson received her undergraduate degree in studio art from Benedict College in South Carolina, studying under Tyrone Jeter and John Wright. She also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix. She spends most of her time developing a functioning art studio.

She is the youngest of three siblings and the first of them to have graduated from college. During her freshman year she says the time came for her to declare a major. After hearing an announcement from a art professor requesting all art majors to report to the art building, Wilson began to reflect on the art competitions she won in grade school. She also realized that she liked to help out with anything artistically. She made her decision without knowing of her artistic abilities.

Wilson says, “I create art work that speaks realism. I was taught that you can only create art from references and things that you have studied.” She is greatly inspired by God, her husband, former art professors, musicians Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton.

Just like anything else that someone does with their lives, Wilson says that she has a natural love for art. The work involved with creating “I love understanding how art is created. If you don’t take the time to learn your craft then it wouldn’t have any meaning to you when presented,” she says. This declaration she relates to cooking food. “If you don’t take the time to learn how to cook a dish, without having a general understanding of the food, the dish will be distasteful,” she states. “I love the work that’s involved with creating my pieces more than the artwork itself!” While she was a student at Benedict College, Wilson was called upon to submit artwork for the Palmetto GBA Exhibition in Columbia. To her surprise both pieces sold for almost $86.00 to unknown buyers. There are several ways to own pieces created by artist Joy M. Wilson. The pricing of a custom portrait painting is determined by three main factors; size of the painting, number of figures (figure refers to number of people in a painting), and shipping cost. Shipping cost is determined by the location and size of the painting. In Charlotte and surrounding areas, there is no shipping required. however the customer is responsible for picking their painting.

ason L. Keith is a man whose sole purpose is to better his community and help make a difference in someone’s life. His genuine concern for the betterment of society complements his passion to find justice in the midst of adversity.

Jason L. Keith is a criminal defense attorney and owner of Keith & Associates, PLLC, based in Greensboro, N.C., with a secondary office in Archdale. His practice covers Guilford, Davidson, Alamance, Randolph and Forsyth counties. Keith is from Jacksonville, N.C., and a proud graduate of North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. He holds a bachelor’s of arts degree in political science and a juris doctorate from the North Carolina Central School of Law. Six months post- graduation, he began practicing general criminal defense work in Greenville, N.C., under a general practitioner. “It was hard to find a job and I was willing to work for anyone who would pay me,” says Keith. As a result Keith began doing Federal defense work. The Federal system, though strict, is a great preparation for the State criminal system. There is a saying if you can make it in Federal court you can make it anywhere. It was an experience that provided invaluable experience and knowledge with the federal filing system. Such experience prepared him for his own private practice.

Upon completion of a series of jobs including a civil litigation discovery position, Keith began working as a criminal defense attorney for a high volume law firm in High Point. It was there he began his journey as a student of the law. Starting his experience in Davidson County was invaluable. Davidson County is one of the few remaining counties that does not have a public defender’s office. That means that after being approved to practice as a court appointed attorney in Davidson County you stand a really good chance of being appointed to some very serious cases. He vividly recalled the appointment of one of his first cases, a drug case in which his client potentially faced 12 years of jail time. After only a few years of handling and gaining confidence from these and other serious cases, Keith decided to step out on faith and experience and start Keith & Associates. With only himself and a legal assistant, Keith & Associates opened its doors in the fall of 2006. Attorney Keith states that while it was intimidating to become a business owner, “I reminded myself I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” Keith & Associates, Attorneys at Law is now comprised of fully functioning staff of legal assistants, paralegals and 3 attorneys. The firm focuses on criminal law, family law, small business litigation and personal injury cases.

Keith contributes much of his passion for law and helping others to personal experience. He humbly recalls a time while still in high school, when his father was in a position of being sued. As a business owner, Keith has faced challenges many small business owners face. However, through it all Keith & Associates continues to grow. n the basement of his home, Kevin Gates started a business that has afforded him an opportunity of self-employment and independency. It was during 1990 and shortly after getting comfortable with entrepreneurship, Gates obligations as a reserve in the United States Army called him back to duty for

Operation Desert Storm.

Born and raised in Winston Salem, N.C., Gates graduated from East Forsyth High School and immediately enlisted in the army. He describes himself as entrepreneur, community advocate, and mentor. Married and with only one child, he has connected his success in business to his faith in God.

While serving in the Gulf, Gates says he used his spare time to develop a business plan. “I promised myself that if returned home in good health after serving, then I would live the American dream,” he says. According to Gates, this dream was to quit his full time job as a supervisor with Douglas Batteries and own his very own screen printing business.

After returning home from proudly serving his country, Gates began to look for a store front. His tour had provided him with a surplus of income to not only take care of his family, but to also save for his eventual business. Gates was ready to tackle entrepreneurship and eventually he found a location at 3714 Indiana Avenue in Winston Salem, which still serves as home for Winston Salem Tees.

Clients of Gates are not just customers but the back bone of his business. He addresses their needs with a consistent concern for quality and superior service. These clients include CP3 Foundation, Josh Howard Foundation, Pet Milk, Winston Lake Family YMCA, Boys Club of Winston Salem, Winston Salem Housing Authority, NC School of the Arts, Winston Salem State University, Salem College, Wake Forest University, and many other businesses and organizations. Gates also receives an enormous amount of business from family reunions, sporting teams, and sporting events.

Some of the equipment used at Winston Salem Tee’s include an automatic screen printing press and a manual press. They also have full embroidery capabilities.

Winston Salem Tee’s currently operates with a staff of three employees under the leadership of Kevin Gates.

Born and raised in Charlotte, N.C., Peay is the youngest of seven siblings. Although raised in a home with both parents, growing up wasn’t easy for him. He had to deal with many issues as a young man; one of which was the violent death of one of his brothers. Although he has faced many life changing challenges in his life, one of his biggest challenges was dealing with illiteracy. He spent several years in the school system not quite reading as well as his peers. He got by in the school system with his great personality and although his illiteracy was clearly a problem teachers continued to advance him to the next grade level. His disability led to moments of depression. Finally, frustrated with the feelings that he did not measure up to everyone else he decided to get help. While in high school he overcame this disability and graduated with his class.

Dealing with this challenge gave him the inspiration that he could do anything if he just set his goals and pursued them full force.

Today, Peay is an author and owner of Peayce Media Group, a publishing company Charlotte, NC. He started writing in the year 2000 after being inspired and motivated from an email that was about how African Americans kept their selves enslaved by greed and selfishness. This email might have angered most, but it only made him realize that he was enslaving himself.

His first book, ‘We’re Holding Us Back’ was meant to shed light on this matter. He wanted to give black people the same enlightenment that he had received when reading that email. Although, the book did not achieve the success he had hoped for, he did not give up on writing. He states, “I rushed the first book. I did not take the time to do the research in finding a good editor. I did not realize what exactly it took to become an author. I just wanted to share my thoughts, but I had to learn the technique of how to effectively and successfully do that.”

Realizing that he still had a message to share, he realized that his message, his story, was the exact inspiration that he felt would encourage others to achieve personal success. After meeting other authors, learning the business, and getting in contact with the right people, he started writing again in 2008. He had lived

a life full of obstacles, but most importantly he wanted to share the victory of overcoming them. He wanted to share this message of hope with others and to express that achieving personal success is attainable and at their fingertips. He shares this message in his new book, ‘How to Spell Success, C-H-A-N-G-E,’ which was released this past June. He states that “this is a self help investment that focuses on simple principles that you hear every day to assist you to overcome obstacles to embrace change and progress in order to achieve success. It’s not all about money; instead it’s about personal growth.”

Peay took control of the direction of his life by setting goals and not giving up until each one was achieved. He is a proud father and a husband of 17 years. As a self taught trombone musician he frequently plays at the United House of Prayer for All People, his place of worship. He also hosts an online radio talk show at www.blogtalkradio.com/changingforsuccess. He defines himself as being a man of strong beliefs, bold, but not loud. When not in a professional environment he loves to laugh and just have fun. His desire is to continue to motivate people to stay positive. Brian Peay Ashanti Whitehe used to confine her title to that of a of writer but as her photography, academic papers, literary criticisms and stage work grew, Ashanti White of Raleigh realized that “writer” was too limiting. As a poet, novelist, actress dancer, and choreographer, she loves all forms of art. The only area she hasn’t mastered as of now is music because

she never has enough time to practice. White says she began writing professionally 11 years ago, when she was 16 with her poem, “The Fight”, which dealt with the Africans of the Diaspora’s struggle in America. Over the years, she has published works in The Amistad, Mandela Literary Journal, and The Apocalyptic among other publications. Also, she has a column, “I’m Just Saying” for DV8 Magazine in Atlanta. In 2008, she published her first novel, Chasing Eden and in 2009, released her poetry collection, Razor Blades between My Teeth. Both publications received positive critical reviews. She has already completed her next novels, And Somehow We Were Happy and Don’t Speak, a teen novel. Recently, she has fallen in love with screenwriting. She composed a series of scripts for Big Picture, Bottom Line (BPBL), Inc. in Raleigh as well as the script for La Revue Negra: The Josephine Baker Story, a show in which she starred in for Drama is Life Productions.

“I have always enjoyed reading; I love getting lost in the story or soaking up the knowledge that it provides. I am extremely grateful that I can now do that for other literary lovers,” says White. “When I began writing poetry at 16, it was a way of expressing myself. It still serves the same purpose. Composing helps me work through various issues and circumstances.” As a writer, White also gets to serve as a voice for people who haven’t found their own or don’t have the courage or means to tackle problems. As Miss Johnston County (and later at the Miss North Carolina Pageant), she presented a self-composed poetic monologue, “The Word”, that dealt with a rape victim who was finally coming to terms with her ordeal. Following her performance, she had a number of people share their experiences with her. One woman wrote her an anonymous letter sharing that she had been abused as a child and though she had never told anyone, she has always felt ashamed about it. She further noted that she no longer felt ashamed. “I’m constantly amazed at how powerful a single voice, whether written or spoken, can be,” says White.

Although she writes about her own experiences in Chasing Eden, White finds that most of her works deal with a multitude of experiences. “I read a lot so my inspiration comes from outside occurrences,” says White. “Tomorrow…Nothing,” published in Razor Blades Between My Teeth, deals with the media’s dehumanization of Seung-hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Killer.” Another piece that was recently published in Taj Mahal Review, “The Third Kind”, discusses the terrible lawlessness that plagues Darfur and the world’s refusal to truly acknowledge the travesty that takes place there.

White simply hopes that she can continue on her path. Although she performed her first professional piece in 1999, she became a full-time artist in March 2009. Since that time, she has performed at a number of festivals, including the Decatur Book Festival, the MoSoul Poetry Festival, and the Gwinnett Reading Festival. She also presented scholarly research at the Conference on African American Culture and Experience (CACE) and the Information, Diversity, Engagement, Access, and Libraries Summit (iDEALS). She plans to start a family with her husband in 2011.

The clothier is not your average menswear shop. You won’t see the standard off the rack suits, shirts, and shoes, but Total Image Menswear transforms clients based upon their individual needs. The strategic dress wear, as French calls them, are from designers, some known, others unknown that appeal to the aggressive, high profile and confident man. Clients have ranged from NFL players, attorneys, clergymen to businessmen.

It wasn’t until 1999 that French began to receive the God-given vision for Total Image Menswear, but he has been a self proclaimed “fashion visionary” or “change agent” basically his entire life. “As a child I was always interested in my appearance. My mother says I made her so furious trying to stay in the latest trends,” says French. As he grew older, his desire to “dress to impress” grew as well. Accordingly, the Total Image Menswear client represents his very best, utilizing every opportunity to make the best lasting, first impression. Possessing a keen sense of style, French quickly notices the common mistakes men make when it comes to how they dress. He realizes most men find it difficult to piece together articles of clothing that effectually exude the confident man he so regularly refers to.

“In most cases, the wives, mothers or girlfriends are major deciding factors in how we dress,” says French. “I was tired of seeing young men with sagging pants and shirts too large,” he continues. “I found it alarming to see grown men wearing suits that didn’t fit properly or the pants were hemmed too long or too short. It was frustrating to see men not cognizant of the image they portrayed. I wanted to make a difference by using the talent that God gave me to assist one man at a time to recreate their appearance.”

While working part-time in a clothing store, French began to be sought by clients for his ability to creatively blend and coordinate colors and patterns. The vision was beginning to take shape. God gave him the business name and motto. Seeking to follow the direction of the Lord, French began to research what he needed to run his own business. After much prayer and preparation he purchased a business license and began consultations with his own friends. French told everyone he knew of the blossoming business; news spread, referrals were made and new clients became loyal.

Financially, it hasn’t always been easy; clientele has not always been consistent. He admits there were certainly years of odd jobs and lots of headache and heartache. Nevertheless he trudged on because he knew his purpose and was determined to fulfill it.

It wasn’t until 2007 that his pastor, Pastor Reginald M. Holliday of Bethany Fellowship C.O.G.I.C., introduced him to a course at North Carolina A&T University for minority-owned businesses that things began to turn around. It was the Minority Enterprise Training and Development program. He graduated from the course in 2008 and the wealth of knowledge he received was priceless. The training gave him the significant insights he lacked regarding business stability, financial options and other resources.

As with any business, French still encounters various challenges and stumbling blocks including marketing and financial security however, the lessons he has learned through trial and error have proved to be the most rewarding. “I’ve learned that without the right marketing tool you can’t reach the right people to make your business grow,” he says. “As a new company, it’s difficult to get the funding needed to run my business.” Nevertheless, French is undeterred. His faith and constant contact with God through sincere prayer compels him to believe there are great things in store for Total Image Menswear. French already has several ventures in the pipeline that he is working on. He is currently writing the vision for Total Image 2, a non-profit organization that will host seminars on everything from how to tie a tie, to image etiquette. While Total Image Menswear currently provides items from established designers, clients can look forward to wearing the better menswear from T.I.M., French’s personally designed and manufactured clothing line. Already known for its gold standard in apparel, French proclaims that in the future Total Image Menswear and Total Image 2 will be synonymous with great things throughout the fashion industry as well as the community.

o some it would seem as if the 21st Century church has lost its way. No longer is it common to see church mothers manning the sacred altar, embracing the newly converted souls or even to hear them sing the traditional songs or hymns that so many present day saints don’t seem to know or care to learn. The questions are often posed, where did the church go? Where is the community involvement? What happened to the local church that knew the names of its parishioners? What happened to the church of yesteryear? What happened to the tent revival days where people were instantly healed, delivered and

set-free? Likewise many ask if the true leaders of the church have come and gone. Where are the pastors with integrity, a true heart and desire to see the lives of people changed for the better? For those who pose these questions and more the answer is unequivocally, yes, there are still integrity-filled pastors and praying mothers.

Among such are Bishop William L. Washington and First Lady Alice Washington of Power House of Deliverance Garden Cathedral. Bishop Washington is a living example of a man of God with integrity and compassion for all people. First Lady Washington, affectionately known as “Mother Faith”, walks in authority as she loves and “mothers” the people of God. For a span of over 40 years Bishop and First Lady Washington have faithfully proclaimed the gospel. They have worked as a dynamic ministry team and have stood firmly on the Word of God without compromise and under their leadership Power House of Deliverance Church has come to be known for its stern refusal to buckle under the world’s pressure to water-down the Word of God.

Bishop Washington says of the church, “We are a ministry of deliverance, miracle-working deliverance. We believe in divine healing, casting out devils, signs and wonders.” Nevertheless, it was not always apparent that Bishop Washington would be the divinely-appointed vessel God would use to carry the torch and mantle of leadership after the death of the churches founder, Bishop J.H. Covington. Reared in the baptist church, Bishop Washington began to stray away during his teenage years, but he could soon hear the voice of the Lord beckoning him to return.

It was during this time that God began to use Bishop Washington and elevate him in the ministry. Coincidentally, only two years after returning to Christ, while preaching a revival service in Wytheville, VA, he met his soon to be wife. Forty years, five children, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a host of spiritual sons and daughters later, Bishop and First Lady Washington have not slacked concerning the ministry. They are constantly moving, motivated and ministering. Even so, they have been

challenged by crisis on several occasions; yet never wavering in faith.

First Lady Washington proclaims, “When I was diagnosed with cancer three times, I took faith and spoke to that disease each time and denied it the privilege to operate in my temple. While on this journey, I’ve faced many trials and tribulations, but faith has been my tool to overcome with victory.” Time and again it was their faith that enabled them, with faces like flint, to march onward as Christian soldiers.

It is easy to see why Power House of Deliverance Church is consistently growing and ever-changing. It is a direct reflection of its leaders. People will certainly flock to where they feel loved and embraced. The rapid growth experienced by Power House of Deliverance Church has been so severe over the past 44 years that the church, which once only consisted of 33 members including founder, Bishop J.H. Covington, his wife, Florence E. Covington and their four children, has relocated several times, each moved warranted by the exponential growth of the

Over the past 20 years, Bishop L. Washington has blessed my life in insurmountable ways. After receiving salvation under our founder, the late Bishop J.H. Covington and maturing to the level of pastor, Bishop Washington never hesitated to pour into my life as I fulfilled my destiny.

Women in ministry often still find they are held in low esteem. Not so in the Power House of Deliverance organization. Bishop Washington declared the lifting of the ceiling for women and continues to proceed with the demonstration of it. He does not allow any disrespect and gives his support to women who labor in the gospel.

Bishop and Mother Washington have afforded much support to me as I have battled a major illness. He is certainly God sent and God used. How wonderful for flowers to be given while they can still be smelled.

Bishop Washington is an amazing man and man of God. I remember when I first got saved. He taught me many things; particularly how to deal with and handle people. The lesson was regardless of any person issues or struggles, they are still a living soul.

After two years into my walk with Christ, I found myself learning how to serve in ministry by watching Bishop Washington serve others. As I served along side of him as his Armourbearer, he challenged me to know God on a greater level by teaching me how to pray in the spirit and how to study the word of God. Through this experience, I learned what I was called to do for the Lord.

There are many teachers but not many fathers. Bishop Washington is a father who instructs with wisdom. He is a great man of God and I love him just as much as I know he loves me.

congregation. The churches astounding growth is not only measured in numbers but also through its various outreach programs. The outreach programs are what keep the church sincerely invested and aware of the community. “Charity begins at home,” says Bishop Washington. “We are concerned with our community, city, state, country and world. I believe it needs to work inside out.” In every capacity with every necessary tool, Power House of Deliverance Church reaches out to those hurting and in need. From the Caring and Sharing program, a daily ministry to the homeless, to the prison ministry, to several international efforts, the church is maintaining the mandate Christ gave to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, receive the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and come unto those in prison. “We minister anywhere we can around the globe. We have a special ministry interest in South Africa, and we minister with them,” says Bishop Washington of the outreach programs.

It’s reaching out to people and meeting them where they hurt, where they lack and where they suffer is what drives Bishop and First Lady Washington. They understand there are innumerable people hurting and in despair. Not only do they present God to them, but the loving couple also unconsciously mother and father on them. It is simply something they do without hesitation. “I am a father. If anything I am a father,” says Bishop Washington. The scripture comes to mind that says, ‘for though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers’. “I am nurturing yet strong like a corrective father,” says Bishop Washington. “My job is to be a father. I’m a father, physically and spiritually.”

It is that fathering mentality that prompted Bishop Washington to follow the direction of the Lord and pen his first book, Closing Doors on the Echoes of the Past. Birthed from a message he once preached, the book speaks to the heart of every man, woman and child who has ever had any unresolved issues. Bishop Washington uses his personal experiences to lead readers into deliverance from their past. He is very transparent throughout the book, even sharing with readers how he and his family dealt with the death of his son. The book focuses on three main pillars to rely upon: forgiveness of others and self, forsaking of past issues and forgetting the past. Bishop Washington admonishes readers to “beware of open doors, for they release the echoes of your past and draw you back to a time and place you’ve once endured. You must close the doors of the past in order to enjoy the future that God has for you, for it is a fact: time does not close doors, we must!” Not only has God opened the door for Bishop Washington and Power House of Deliverance Church to minister through the power of the pen, but also through music. Having been the former praise and worship leader for the J.H Covington Crusade and cognizant of the power of music, especially in the gospel community, Bishop Washington encouraged the Power House of Deliverance Cathedral Choir to continue to carry the torch of deliverance through song. Singing with skillfully crafted melodies and the anointing that moves to repentance, the famed choir transitioned from church choir to recording choir on August 5, 2007, hosting the live recording of their debut album, The Christ Factor, appropriately named and inspired from a dynamic message from Bishop Washington entitled, Christ in you, the Hope of Glory.

While all the accolades are important and humbling, Bishop Washington maintains that the Word of God must remain the most important factor and must always go forward. He often says, “Let no word fall to the ground.” It is a mantra he recites coupled with a determination to see the Kingdom of Christ built up, established and producing good fruit and refusing to allow any word that comes from God to fall to the ground. Bishop and First Lady Washington and Power House of Deliverance Garden Cathedral are certainly preparing for the future and are doing their part to see the Kingdom of God established and operating at its fullest potential.

P Most people associate the phrase, “preventive dentistry”, to mean having your teeth cleaned in a dental office and brushing and flossing your teeth at home. For certain, it does include those very important things, but from a purely scientific standpoint, the phrase has a much broader interpretation and includes many more services that just dental prophylaxis (cleaning) and homecare. Technically and scientifically speaking, preventive dentistry includes any dental service or intervention done for the purpose of preventing future tooth loss or deterioration of the oral cavity (mouth). It may include any service typically provided in a dental office such as fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and bite guards. In fact, all dental services, except for extractions can be considered preventive.

To understand why, consider this adage I tell my patients: If you lose even one tooth, and don’t immediately replace it with a fixed, rigid tooth replacement, you’re in the process of losing all of your teeth.

This happens because teeth, like building blocks, need each other for support. When a tooth is lost, the biting force in your mouth changes, and your teeth begin to shift. As your teeth shift, the environment in your mouth changes in a way that makes you more susceptible caries (tooth decay) and periodontal disease (gum disease), which cause more tooth loss if left untreated. As you loose more and more teeth, the shifting become greater, creating more tooth decay and gum disease, and subsequently, more tooth loss. This negative spiral can only be completely stopped (before it takes all of your teeth) by reconstructing your dentition in a way that once again provides you with all your teeth and normal mouth function.

Right now, you fall into one of two categories. Either you have already lost one or more teeth or you haven’t lost any. If you fall in the latter category and you haven’t lost any, preserve them at all cost. Be sure to get them cleaned in a dental office at least twice a year and carefully follow the homecare instructions they give you. If you have pain, in one or more of them, avoid extracting them at all cost. When you think of how the cost of everything we buy has gone up in price over the last ten years, individual dental services are relatively inexpensive. However, when you need several teeth treated or replaced, the cost adds up very quickly to become very expensive. Also, it costs much more to replace a tooth than it does to save it. For example, it can cost as little as $195 up to no more than about twenty four hundred if it needs a root canal and/or a crown to save a tooth. By contrast, to replace teeth the ideal way with dental implants, it will cost a minimum of thirty three hundred to as much as forty five hundred dollars per tooth

If you fall into the second category, and have already lost one or more teeth, get the remaining teeth healthy and start replacing the missing teeth as soon as possible, before the situation gets worst. Most practices will work with you to divide your treatment into small portions to enable you to work within your financial means. There are less expensive ways to replace teeth besides dental implants, but they are not nearly as effective and have to be considered, at best, temporary solutions

If fear and anxiety have kept you from seeking dental treatment in the past, there are many forms of dental sedation that control those problems very effectively in most cases. That said, techniques and local anesthetics have been improved to the extent that most people can receive dental treatment in complete comfort with nothing more that local anesthetics

I’m sure you have many questions such as “what is a root canal”, “what is a dental implant” and “I’m I a candidate for dental sedation”. I would like to discuss all those issues in detail, but it is not possible, given the space allotted for this article. However, I urge you to make regular and systematic dental care a habit and not an occasional necessity. Your teeth and your pocket book will thank you for it.

R tirement3 Things You Should Know

When you work and pay Social Security taxes, you earn “credits” toward Social Security benefits.

The number of credits you need to get retirement benefits depends on when you were born. If you were born in 1929 or later, you need 40 credits (10 years of work).

If you stop working before you have enough credits to qualify for benefits, the credits will remain on your Social Security record. If you return to work later on, you can add more credits so that you qualify. No retirement benefits can be paid until you have the required number of credits.

How Much Will Your Retirement Benefit Be?Your benefit payment is based on how much you earned during your working career. Higher lifetime earnings result in higher benefits. If there were some years when you did not work or had low earnings, your benefit amount may be lower than if you had worked steadily.

Your benefit payment also is affected by the age at which you decide to retire. If you retire at age 62 (the earliest possible retirement age for Social Security), your benefit will be lower than if you wait until later to retire. This is explained in more detail below.

Note: Each year, about three months before your birthday, you receive a Social Security Statement. It can be a valuable tool to help you plan a secure financial future. It provides you with a record of your earnings and gives estimates of what your Social Security benefits would be at different retirement ages. It also gives an estimate of the disability benefits you could receive if you become severely disabled before retirement, as well as estimates of the survivors benefits Social Security would provide your spouse and eligible family members when you die.

Choosing when to retire is an important but personal decision. Regardless of the age you choose to retire, it is a good idea to contact Social Security in advance to see which month is best to claim benefits. In some cases, your choice of a retirement month could mean higher benefit payments for you and your family.

In deciding when to retire, it is important to remember that financial experts say you will need 70-80 percent of your preretirement income to have a comfortable retirement. Since Social Security replaces only about 40 percent of preretirement income for the average worker, it is important to have pensions, savings and investments.

It may be to your advantage to have your Social Security benefits start in January, even if you do not plan to retire until later in the year. Depending on your earnings and your benefit amount, it may be possible for you to start collecting benefits even though you continue to work. Under current rules, many people can receive the most benefits possible with an application that is effective in January.

You should apply for benefits about three months before the date you want your benefits to start. lame of God is an artist who God created to quench all the wickedness in man’s heart, soul, and mind with anointing music. He is also an artist that spends time with the Lord to fulfill God’s will in his life and to encourage others to do the same. Malcolm Pickard

is Flame of God. As a student of Liberty University, Pickard says his life as a gospel rap artist is fun and challenging in many ways. “It is fun because I meet a lot of people and get a chance to spread the faith. Also, I get a chance to spend time with kids that don’t have a father around or a mother around,” he says. The rigorous schedule that he keeps requires devotion on his behalf to fulfill his dreams. This schedule involves dedicating time to serve God each day through praise and worship, reading God’s word, praying and meditation. Pickard says he merges this service with his passion for music, spending nearly 20 hours weekly, writing lyrics and seeking God to tell him what his music and future album should be about. With any spare time left, Pickard travels to youth revivals, youth conferences, and different church functions to minister the gospel through music. Pickard says he stepped on the gospel rap scene when he was 19 years old, but his roots in gospel music date back to when he was only 11. He sang was with youth choirs from his church and from different schools. He admits that he wasn’t following the correct paths in life while hanging with friends who were involved in “bad activities”. “I was getting into things that were not pleasing in the Lord’s eyesight,” says Pickard. One night when his friends turned their backs and left him hanging he says he wondered who could he turn to and Jesus said He had a plan for him. “Jesus expressed his love with open arms so I ran to him and I found comfort and a new Life. Then I went to church very heavily and read my Bible everyday and God showed me the way to becoming Flame of God,” he explains. Pickard says his number one inspiration is the love Jesus has for all of us by dying on the cross for our sins. He says that he is trying to send a message about living the life God intended for us to live. “I don’t establish a limit for who the message is for because I minister to a wide range of people. I have fans as young as five, to the oldest of age 70 that come to my concerts or listen to my songs.

After a visit to her school, Moffett left an impression on Nevius that, as a African American woman, we must set our goals high and work hard to reach them.

Her life has been impacted by her family, friends, and teachers. “They are a great support team. They pick me up when I am down, give me the best advice when I need it, and assisted me with building confidence,” she says.

If selected as Miss Teen North Carolina, how do you plan to use this role to enhance the lives of others in your community?

I plan to carry the message to other young teens that anything is possible. It doesn’t matter where you come from or what you’ve been through. Just know you can do anything to better your situation. All you need is to have faith in God, believe in yourself, and don’t let criticism and negativity interfere with your goals.

he is well accustomed to juggling many responsibilities at once. Raising three girls and also standing in as a mother figure in her community keeps Jennifer Taylor occupied. Still she finds time to manage her own business, accomplishing quite a lot, both academically and personally.

A native of High Point, Taylor is a product of Guilford College, where she received a bachelor’s of arts, and Guilford Technical Community College where she obtained a cosmetology certificate. For the past 16 years, she has been styling the heads of women in High Point with short sassy cuts, and promoting healthy hair.

Styling hair doesn’t satisfy the yearning Taylor has to positively impact the lives of people. Her involvement with various youth programs such as the High Point Panther Youth Club and leading a group for youths (MYL Youth Modeling Troop) sponsored by her salon, Made You Look located at 3800 Tinsley Drive, provides her with an opportunity to steer individuals onto the right path and teach them how to make good decisions.

Taylor says she loves to make people smile and feel better. For many years she was the primary stylist for American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino, also a High Point native. “I started doing her hair when she was only 14 years old,” says Taylor. At a hair show sponsored by Taylor, Fantasia was invited to sing of which she was compensated with a free a hair cut. As the relationship

between the two grew, Fantasia spent more time at Taylor’s home leading up to American Idol. Taylor traveld with Fantasia as she competed, doing her hair in the sinks of motels.

When the time came for Taylor to open her business, she didn’t have an instructional manual or handbook to show her how. She says she stepped out on faith and faced the unknown in 2007. At first when business was slow, she was a little scared because everything started to fall apart, including staffing and equipment. She says she had to cover much of the operating cost with her own money. She told her self that if it was easy, then everyone would be doing it, and so she carried on. Now Made You Look Salon now has a total of six stylist including Tanya, Regina, Denise, Ann, Kisha, and Jennifer. Dekia, a current cosmetologist student, and Taylor provide extended support to the stylists.

Inspired by family and friends, Taylor continues to persevere and take her business to the next level. She says that every client is important and meeting their needs is her primary objective. This task is forever ongoing as she constantly looks for innovative methods to strengthen her business. She advises everyone looking to start their own business to take the time to learn all that is possible about your craft. “You must work on being a good person. A great personality starts it all off,” says Taylor.
