HMFSIL–Pyrogenic Fumed Silica by ICV
HMFSIL is an amorphous, anhydrous colloidalsilicon dioxide (pyrogenic fumed silica) that findsapplication in various industrial systems becauseof its small particle size, large BET surface area,spherical morphology, high surface activity andpurity.
HMFSIL has various performance benefits and isused as an anti-caking (free-flow) agent inpowder systems, thickening and thixotropic agentin liquid systems and as a reinforcing filler. Itfinds use in industries as diverse as food,pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints & coatings,inks, adhesives, unsaturated polyester resins andelastomers.
Chemistry of Fumed Silica
Fumed Silica (or Pyrogenic Silica) is a white, fluffy powderof amorphous structure. According to surface chemistry,fumed silica is classified as hydrophilic (untreated) andhydrophobic (treated) fumed silica.
Hydrophilic fumed silica is generally manufactured by theflame hydrolysis of volatile chlorosilanes (silicontetrachloride ) in an oxyhydrogen flame.
Hydrophobic fumed silica is produced by reactinghydrophilic fumed silica with hexamethyldisilazane. Thisgives the fumed silica hydrophobicity necessary forvarious applications and functionalities where waterrepellency is important.

Rheology Control & Thixotropy
HMFSIL is used in various applicationsto provide viscosity control andthixotropic behavior. HMFSIL performsbest in non- polar liquids in which thesilica aggregates link together intochains through hydrogen bonding. Theresulting 3-dimensional structure can bebroken down by subjecting the systemto mechanical stress through stirring orshaking. In a state of rest, HMFSILparticles link-up again, restoringviscosity.
In polar and semi-polar liquids(hydrogen bonded system) hydrophilicfumed silica has a less pronouncedthickening effect.
Reinforcement
HMFSIL is used to providereinforcement and improve mechanicalproperties like tensile strength,elongation at break and tear resistancein elastomers, sealants, adhesives, HTV& RTV silicone rubber, mouldingcompounds and cable insulations.
Free flow and anti caking properties
HMFSIL is used in hydroscopic powders,resins and adhesives that experiencecaking and lumping. The nano-sizedHMFSIL particles form a layer of silicaaround the powder particles, reducingfrictional forces and developing a ballbearing effect. HMFSIL is used toimprove fre e f lo w in fo o d p o wd e r s ,f i re extinguisher powders, PVC mater-batches, resins and other powders.
Anti-settling, dispersion & grinding andsag resistance
HMFSIL p re ve n t s o r d e la ys th esedimentation of solids in liquid systemssuch as pigmented coatings or resinscontaining fillers where sedimentationbecomes unavoidable. HMFSIL particlesloosen the solid s tructure, makingremixing easy.
In unsaturated polyester resins and gelcoats, HMFSIL prevents the draining orsagging of the resin when applied tovertical surfaces.
PERFORMANCEANDFUNCTIONALBENEFITSHMFSIL finds special application inchemical mechanical polishing (CMP)due to its scratch and abrasionresistance when dry grinding ordispersing solids in liquids and sizereduction application.HMFSILencapsulates fragment particles andhence prevents theirre - agglo meration .
Adsorbency & Carrier Application
HMFSILl can adsorb gaseous, liquidand even solid materials in dissolvedform. This is due to its high specificsurface area. By carrying significantamounts of liquid, it converts liquids andpastes into free flowing powders,facilitating dosing and handling.
Electric & Thermal Insulation
HMFSIL has very low solid state thermalconductivity due to the small particlesize and spaces between the particles –its high purity also makes it an excellentelectrical insulator. It is also s table athigh temperatures.
All these properties make HMFSIL avery useful additive in application asdiverse as elastomers.
Electrostatic Charge Effect
HMFSIL particles acquire a negativecharge due to the slightly acidic silanolgroups on the surface. This findsapplication in printer and copier tonerswhere the powder must be negativelycharged to adhere to the positive roller.In other powders, HMFSIL can reducethe tendency to acquire a negativecharge and hence avoid undesirableproperties in plastic powders.

Packaging & Delivery
HMFSIL is packed in multi layer, kraft paperbags containing lO kg each. The bags aredelivered on pallets which are shrinkwrapped with a polyethylene film. HMFSILis delivered by road or sea as boxcontainers with the following configurations:20’ GP – 1.8 MT, 1-pallets, 180 kg / pallet40’ GP – 3.6 MT, 20 pallets, 180 kg / pallet40’ HQ – 4.0 MT, 20 pallets,200kg / pallet
Storage and stability
HMFSIL remains chemically stable formany years under appropriate storageconditions. However, contact withhydrofluoric acid or any highly alkalinesubstance must be prevented becausethese types of material react with silicondioxide.
HMFSIL also does not degrade with time.Hydrophilic grades of HMFSIL will adsorbmoisture and other vapors. However anyadsorption of water is reversible. Theremay be a slight increase in moisturecontent over time depending on ambienttemperature and re la t ive humidityconditions. Adsorbed moisture can beremoved by vacuum drying or heating thefumed silica.
During longer storage times, slightcompaction may take place, particularly inlower layers of a pallet. The tamped densitymay increase slightly, also leading to astructural change.It is therefore recommended that :HMFSIL must be stored in a clean, dry areaaway from humidity and volatile substancesand at ambient temperatures.HMFSIL should be used within 2 years ofthe production date as bags may startdeteriorating beyond this time period andchanges in properties may be expected.
