LETTERS

I am writing in response to the news that the Town of Avon public officials may decide not to renew the lease held by Stone Creek Char-ter School.

I have been a permanent resident of Eagle County since 1998 and a property owner here since 1984. I love this area and made a home here with my beautiful wife Kelly, my wonderful six-year-old daughter Alexa and my four-year-old genius son, Michael.

I am concerned about the educa-tion my kids will receive here in the Vail Valley. I specifically held onto a house I own on the east coast as a safety net in case my wife and I could not come to terms with the schooling choices here. I have a National School of Excellence two miles away from my home where a punctual school bus would pick up my children and drop them off at the foot of my driveway. I have offices

there, as well as friends and family, but I choose to live here simply be-cause life here is better. Having said that, I would reluctantly leave the valley and return to the rat race to ensure my children receive the best upbringing and education possible.

After much deliberation and due diligence, my wife and I have decid-ed that Stone Creek Charter School was not only the best choice for our children, but our only choice. They have an outstanding curriculum, they have a responsible, friendly, and hard working staff, a concerned board of directors and a dedicat-ed and committed leader in John Brendza. We are lucky to have been chosen through their lottery system to have my daughter attend this school. Hopefully my son Michael will be there next year.

I understand that the town of Avon has other options for their staging area for this federally funded con-

struction project. I also understand that losing this money is not a choice for the town, especially in these difficult economic times. Explore your other options. I am confident that you, our elected officials, can find a solution other than remov-ing 210 students from their school for the sake of “progress.” This is a steep price to pay and could have a negative impact on the future of our children.

Please get to know what the Stone Creek Charter School is con-tributing to our community before you decide to take part in displacing these 210 students and their parents. This school, with your help, will be shining light in this valley for many years to come and will contribute to be a major factor in raising positive, well-educated children.

Sincerely, Philipp Hoyos

CDOT announces completion of $1.89M wildlife fencing

The organizations supporting the “Wildlife on the Move” campaign remind motorists that this is the time of year—particularly November—when wildlife-vehi-cle collisions are at a seasonal high.

The organizations for the “Wildlife on the Move” campaign include the Colorado Department of Trans-portation (CDOT), Colorado Division of Wildlife, Col-orado State Patrol, Rocky Mountain Insurance Infor-mation Agency and the Center for Native Ecosystems.

“The insurance industry pays out nearly $1.1 billion a year in claims for all wildlife-vehicle collisions na-tionwide—a big portion of that is in November, when these types of collisions increase,” said Carole Walker, Executive Director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association. “A single claim for a wildlife-vehicle collision is averaging $2,900.”

Here in Eagle County, CDOT just contracted with Double D Construction for $1.89 million to removing

As Marvel Films plans to have Kenneth Branagh di-rect a new Thor movie set for release next May, Thor for Asgard was the 10th-best selling comic book this week at Tom Rob-bins’ Eagle Valley Music and Comics in West Vail. FilmSchoolRejects’ Jack Giroux recently sat down with Branagh for an exclu-sive interview, where Gi-roux asked Branagh how the film would avoid be-ing campy. “When you do a film that plays around in the fantasy world it’s easy to slip into camp, and Branagh seemed to understand this,” Giroux said of the interview. “Tone was al-ways a key issue. Key people early on… obviously the pro-duction designer Bo Welch and the Academy Award-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne was also someone try-ing to be inspired by the comic book, but also seek it as being as imaginative about it [as pos-sible] and [to] present textures and elements. Freshmen arrive in Congress with many questions

Where to live? Whom to hire? What’s a voting card - and where are the bathrooms? More than 100 members of Congress arrive in Washington this coming week for the first time since winning election, trading the lofti-ness of campaign speeches for mundane lessons in how to do their new jobs.

It’s freshman orientation on Capitol Hill, and the larger-than-usual class of 2010 is getting a crash course on how to navigate the next two years.

Talk of changing the nation’s direction? That’s on the back burner for now. The newly elected House mem-bers - 85 Republicans, a meager nine Democrats - need actual directions around their new workplace. The Sen-ate is having its own orientation at the same time.

Instead of American exceptionalism, his election night theme, Rep.-elect Tim Scott, R-S.C., is focused on Washington’s exceptional rental prices.

“Nothing here is affordable, is what I’ve learned,” says Scott, who might share an apartment with class-mates.

Emanuel formally announces run for

Chicago mayorFormer White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel

officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Chi-cago yesterday, promising to fight any tax increase for city residents.

“We cannot ask taxpayers for more when families are struggling to stay afloat in this economy,” he told sup-porters packing an elementary school auditorium on the city’s North Side. “We cannot price Chicagoans out of their homes, their schools and their communities.”

Emanuel, who’s been campaigning unofficially since he left the White House weeks ago, made some other common political promises as well: to fight crime, cre-ate jobs, improve education and make government ac-cessible to residents.

He promised that before the Feb. 22 election he would make three speeches outlining specific ideas in education, crime and gangs, and the city’s finances.

Emanuel is one of about a half dozen candidates who have either formally announced or are about to.

Government sells spoils of Madoff’s lavish life

Anyone wanting to walk in the shoes of fallen finan-

cier Bernard Madoff was in luck yesterday: Thousands of belongings from his New York City penthouse, in-cluding his used shoes, went on the auction block.

An anonymous bidder paid the highest price of the auction - $550,000 - for a 10.5-carat diamond engage-ment ring that belonged to Madoff’s wife, Ruth. The winning bid topped the $300,000 minimum pre-sale estimate.

Ruth Madoff’s French diamond earrings fetched the next highest price. Valued at $100,000 to $137,500, they went for $135,000 to an undisclosed buyer.

Dog stuck on cliff rescued by sheriff’s deputy

A springer spaniel stuck overnight on a cliff ledge in Lake Pueblo State Park is OK after a sheriff’s dep-uty rappelled down a canyon to retrieve him. The dog named “Doc” went over an 80-foot cliff Thursday morning while training to become a hunting dog.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports the spaniel became trapped after sliding down a shale canyon side. The pup landed on a ledge about 80 feet down a 200-foot ravine.Master Deputy Dylan Jacketta says it was too dark Thursday to attempt a rescue, so rescuers passed blankets down to the ledge. On Friday morning, Jack-etta rappelled down the canyon and rescued Doc.

Man allegedly tried to mow down woman with car

A California man has been accused of trying to run down his ex-girlfriend in a car after she refused his wedding proposal.

The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that Francis-co Hernandez was spotted carrying a bouquet of flow-ers while walking down the street after the incident.

Sheriff’s Lt. Andrew Berg says the 22-year-old was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

The proposal took place Thursday afternoon at the Burger Stop.

After the woman said no, Hernandez allegedly drove onto the sidewalk, through bushes and into the restau-rant parking lot, narrowly missing the woman. “Stacy Will You Marry Me” was on the car’s back window.

He was later picked up while fleeing on foot.

ing department policy. Hamrick got just 2 percent of the vote in the primary that Norman won.

Norman and the three deputies said they were shocked when they were fired Friday. Norman takes over as sheriff Dec. 6.

Wary of Taliban, Afghan Mujahedeen ready

for fightPresident Hamid Karzai’s moves to make peace with

the Taliban are scaring Afghanistan’s ethnic minorities into taking their weapons out of mothballs and prepar-ing for a fight.

Mindful that Karzai’s overtures come with NATO’s blessing, and that U.S. and NATO forces will eventual-ly leave, they worry that power will shift back into the hands of the forces they helped to overthrow in 2001.

Such a peace deal won’t be easy in a country with a complex ethnic makeup and a tradition of vendetta kill-ings. With ethnic and tribal differences having sharp-ened during the violence of the last 30 years, there’s little indication that Karzai’s overtures are gaining much traction.

Chavez backers march through

Venezuela’s capitalThousands of supporters of President Hugo Chavez

filled a downtown Caracas avenue yesterday to demon-strate their backing for the socialist leader’s crackdown on allegedly crooked real-estate and construction com-panies.

Waving Venezuelan flags and wearing T-shirts bear-ing pro-government slogans, roughly 5,000 Chavez supporters marched through downtown Caracas. Some chanted “Viva Chavez!” while others held up banners heralding the president’s order for officials to seize control of more than a dozen residential complexes.

The march was organized so that “fraudulent busi-nessmen know they cannot fool the people as they’ve done in the past because now we have a government that defends us and fights to construct a better country for all of us,” said Carlos Sierra, a member of the rul-ing party.

Bush on post-presidency: ‘I miss being pampered’

Former President George W. Bush says he doesn’t miss much about the White House, just the pampering. Bush told more than 3,000 people at a sprawling central Florida retirement community yesterday that he misses the convenience of Air Force One and never waiting in traffic jams. The 43rd president said, most of all, he misses being commander in chief of the U.S. military.

In his 30-minute speech, he talked about what it was like to return the salute of men and women.

Palin’s TV series a stage for political future?

“Sarah Palin’s Alaska” portrays the show’s heroine as an adventure-loving wife and mother enjoying a whirlwind of activities amid spectacular settings in her home state. There are no overt clues to her future politi-cal ambitions.

However, throughout the first episode of the eight-part TLC documentary series beginning today, Palin’s outdoorsy image against the stunning scenery often plays nicely with her familiar political message.

One telling scene shows Palin and members of her family fishing near a bear and two frolicking cubs. Cut to the Tea Party darling and her self-sufficiency speech. For months, Palin has referred to strong Republican fe-male candidates as “mama grizzlies.”

ADL condemns Glenn Beck’s Soros-Holocaust

remarksThe Anti-Defamation League is criticizing remarks

by Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck about billionaire financier George Soros and the Holocaust.

The conservative pundit described Soros this week as a “Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps.” But he also said he can’t imagine what it must have been like trying to survive.

Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary and donates to liberal causes.

Saudi Arabia blocks Facebook over moral concerns

An official with Saudi Arabia’s communications au-thority says it has blocked Facebook because the popu-lar social networking website doesn’t conform with the kingdom’s conservative values.

The official says Saudi’s Communications and Infor-mation Technology Commission blocked the site yes-terday and an error message shows up when Internet users try to access it.He says Facebook’s content had “crossed a line” with the kingdom’s conservative mor-als, but that blocking the site is a temporary measure.

US team tours Africa to boost bioterror safety

U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar peered over the 4-foot cement wall and thin strands of barbed wire that separated the deadly pathogens in Kenya’s top research lab from the thousands of homes with rusted tin roofs that make up Nairobi’s largest slum.

Lugar and Pentagon officials on a three-nation bio-logical weapons security tour of East Africa on Friday were worried that the dangerous pathogens are within fairly easy reach of terrorists.

Federer blows five match points in Paris loss

Gael Monfils of France saved five match points to beat top-seeded Roger Federer 7-6 (7), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4) Saturday and reach the final of the Paris Masters.

Monfils will face Robin Soderling of Sweden, who saved three match points before overcoming Michael Llodra of France 6-7 (0), 7-5, 7-6 (6).

Monfils faced five match points in the 12th game of the final set before forcing the tiebreaker with an ace.

Federer shanked a forehand to give Monfils two match points, and the Frenchman converted the first with a service winner.

Broncos bench Williams after DUI

The Denver Broncos have hit hit star linebacker D.J. Williams with the “heaviest fines possible” and won’t start him Sunday against Kansas City following his ar-rest on suspicion of drunken driving.

The Broncos also fined their leading tackler an un-disclosed amount for missing practice and a meeting Friday when he was in a detox facility. The team issued a statement saying it was “extremely disappointed in D.J. Williams’ careless and irresponsible actions Fri-day morning.”

While some fans were wondering why Williams didn’t get suspended like wide receiver Brandon Mar-shall (late for treatment) and Tony Scheffler (insubordi-nation) were for the season finale last year, the Broncos did all they could to punish Williams, who leads the team in tackles and sacks.

It’s up to the NFL to fine or suspend a player for al-cohol-related offenses. And Williams faces a multiple-game suspension from the league because it was his second such arrest in his seven seasons in Denver. He also had a DUI arrest in 2005, when he pleaded guilty to impaired driving.

Other teams have similarly punished players for in-fractions and distractions. The New York Jets benched receiver Braylon Edwards for one quarter after a DUI arrest and the Tennessee Titans didn’t let receiver Ken-ny Britt start after he got into a brawl at a bar.

San Diego receiver Vincent Jackson is serving a three-game suspension for multiple DUI arrests, which was reduced from an original four-game penalty.

Williams was arrested a little before 3 a.m. Friday when police spotted him driving his car without head-lights. He was cited with DUI, a misdemeanor, as well as driving without headlights, and taken to a detox fa-cility.

He showed up at team headquarters shortly after practice started Friday but left after a few minutes.

If convicted, Williams also faces a mandatory 10-day jail sentence, although the judge could order he serve his sentence at home, and at least two years of probation. Williams has been ordered to appear in court Dec. 13.

Newton takes field, leads Auburn to championship

gameCam Newton responded to all those allegations of

wrongdoing with another brilliant performance Satur-day, passing for two touchdowns and running for an-other to lead No. 2 Auburn into the Southeastern Con-ference championship game—and another step closer to playing for the national title.

The Tigers (11-0, 7-0 SEC) pulled away from Geor-gia in the fourth quarter for a 49-31 victory that, at least for one day, took some of the heat off college football’s most dynamic player.

Auburn will face either Florida or South Carolina for the conference title on Dec. 4 in Atlanta, though there’s another huge game looming in two weeks: the Iron Bowl showdown against defending national champion Alabama in Tuscaloosa.Newton rushed for 151 yards on 30 bruising carries.

Love joins NBA 30-30 clubAt one point in the third quarter, Kevin Love leaned

over to Michael Beasley on the bench and whispered in his ear.

“I’m going for 30 tonight,” Love said. With Love having only seven points at the time, Bea-

sley looked at him and said, “Thirty what?”Incredibly, Love was talking about rebounds. But he

didn’t stop there.Love grabbed a franchise-record 31 rebounds and

scored 31 points, the NBA’s first 30-30 game in 28

years, and the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit to stun the New York Knicks 112-103 on Friday night.

“I just got a good mindset that every single one was mine,” said Love, who had 23 points and 24 rebounds in a loss to the Lakers on Tuesday.

Love grabbed 15 boards in the third quarter alone to will the Timberwolves to victory. Moses Malone was the last player to do it with 38 points and 32 rebounds for Houston against Seattle in 1982.

WADA denies night doping check proposalThe World Anti-Doping Agency

has denied proposing that Tour de France riders be tested in the mid-dle of the night.

A report issued by WADA ob-servers last month said cycling’s governing body should be more ag-gressive when it conducts tests and that riders should be tested at night.

That prompted criticism from Pascal Chanteur, the head of the French professional cyclists union (UNCP).

Chanteur said riders would be treated like “guinea pigs” if doping controls were carried out in early morning hours.

But WADA Director General Da-

vid Howman told L’Equipe news-paper that WADA observers sent to the Tour this year only recommend-ed “to test the riders more often with controls early in the morning or late at night, at less predictable times, and not in the middle of the night as the UNCP claims.”

ent exercises I’ve been doing. Just my overall agility is better and I’m happy I was able to stick with it and get some important points toward the overall.”

“Lindsey came out of that hairpin with a huge amount of speed and just got a little out of balance,” added women’s tech Head Coach Trevor Wagner. “That snow was so grippy that if you enganged the ski at all, you’d get shot out on your tails and that’s what happened to her. That was an amazing recovery. She was so far off line and pulled it back together. Without that mistake, she would have been right in there. It was an incredible performance.”

Despite the finish, Vonn missed the Levi podium for the first time in three years after landing second there a year ago and winning the event in 2008. Though, the underlining story from Levi may very well be the Ger-man women’s technical team as eight women crowded the top 30, adding to their incredible performance in Soelden where Germany went 1-2 with three in the top 5.

With temps hovering just above 15 degrees and light rapidly fading throughout the second run, Schild pun-ished the slope to climb from fifth to the win in a two-run combined time of 1:52.84, .03 in front of Riesch.

It was Schild’s second consecutive World Cup sla-lom win adding to her victory at the 2010 World Cup Finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany – home of the 2011 World Championships in February. Finn fa-vorite and local hero Tanja Poutiainen hopped one spot

in the second run to cap the women’s podium. The grippy snow caused havoc for later starters in-

cluding Sarah Schleper (Vail, CO), Megan McJames (Park City, UT) and Hailey Duke (Boise, ID) as all three other American starters finished outside the first run top 30.

“Sarah definitely had a good opportunity, but just skied impatient and too direct on the steeps,” said Wag-ner. “She could have popped one in there easily with the way she was skiing up top. The snow was really grippy and kind of chattery. If you tried to cut the turn off at all, you paid the price for it.”

“The snow was actually great, it was just a little bit more aggressive than we anticipated,” added Vonn. “I think everyone’s skis where a little bit too sharp, which is a good problem to have. We’ve got a final training block in Vail for the next couple of weeks and then we head over to Aspen for Thanksgiving and onto Lake Louise. It’s going to be an exciting couple of weeks in North America.”

The U.S. Ski Team will now return to Colorado for two more weeks of training before the World Cup sea-son begins en force with the annual Aspen Winterna-tional Thanksgiving weekend in Aspen, CO.

Action in Levi continues Sunday with men’s slalom featuring Olympic gold medalists Bode Miller (Fran-conia, NH) and Ted Ligety (Park City, UT). Universal Sports will have live streaming of the race starting at 4 a.m. ET on www.UniversalSports.com.

of existing state right of way fence where necessary, installing wildlife fence between MM 140 and MM 173, and installing signs on US 6.

CDOT announced the completion of the project on this week.

Crews also constructed median crossovers, which involved re-moval of 12 feet of concrete safety barrier in two separate sections (at MP 171.5 and 172.5) and installa-tion of guardrail in these areas to al-

low animals both large and small to cross the interstate. Finally, a total of 58 wildlife escape ramps were constructed—four of which were funded by the CDOT. These one-way earthen ramps are constructed six feet high (where a notch in the eight-foot high fence has been cut), allowing animals to escape the high-way right of way and jump back to safety on the other side.

For the five-year period from

2002 through 2006 (the most re-cent data available) there were 361 wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) out of 1,996 total crashes—making WVCs about 18 percent of all types of collisions along this stretch of I-70. This percentage varies from year to year and is higher during wildlife migration season (gener-ally October through February).
