THE UPDATE

Things are warming up in Vail this weekend for the hottest event of the summer, and everyone is re-ally fired up about it.

The Vail Mountaineer will be covering the Scott Firefighter Com-

Wearing “full bunker gear” and a breathing apparatus, pairs of com-petitors will race head-to-head today starting at noon as they simulate the physical demands of real-life fire-

Firefighter and Bachelorette star Ryan Sutter to participate

Ryan Sutter, season one star of reality TV series The Bachelor-ette, recently completed six out of ten sport challenges as part of his 10.10.10 First Descents Challenge to benefit First Descents. Today’s firefighter challenge will be his sev-enth.

Sutter, who is also a Vail fire-fighter, says he’s more nervous than excited about the challenge.

Don Dressler is not just a parent of two kids who play soccer, he is also a coach and the president of their club.

“Where do I start?” Dressler says of his involvement in the Vail Valley Soccer Club. “It’s a rewarding expe-rience, to watch our kids grow up with the sport.”

Dressler has 12-year-old twins who have been play-ing soccer with the club for the last 3 years. He also has a 20-year-old son, who is starting school in California, that played soccer with the club for 2 years.

Dressler says the kids learn the values of sportsman-

ship, teamwork and the spirit of camaraderie, which is why coaching is so much fun for him. This is the third year he has coached for the Vail Valley Soccer Club, he also coached for three years with the Vail Rec District.

A long time fan of the sport himself, Dressler says for him, coaching soccer is about giving the passion he has for the sport to kids he coaches. He has been play-ing since he was 4 years old, and played in high school and college.

He explained the difference between the Vail Rec District’s soccer programs and the Vail Valley Soccer Club experience as being one of philosophy. While the Rec Center tries to make the experience as fair as pos-

3rd shroom festival a successLETTERS

Dear Editor,This year’s Eagle Mushroom Festival attracted a

great number of people interested in hunting mush-rooms from Vail to Gypsum. With all the rain that we have been getting in August, the mushrooms were plentiful. I would like to thank everyone for turning out to this fun event.

Special thanks to the genuine hometown hospitality of Tom and Nate at Paradigms Restaurant. Your mush-room risotto, with the tempura battered sliced puffball mushroom was one of the best I have ever tasted. Great thanks to Chef Ryan Murray of Red Canyon Café for his superb cooking class on how to clean, preserve and cook some of our favorite mushrooms. The garden

fresh green beans and king boletus mushroom dish you prepared was an example of how fresh ingredients cre-ate the memorable dishes we all remember. The gen-erosity of Craig Colby at Broadway Liquors providing the white and red wines we enjoyed at the mushroom cook-off on Saturday night was also greatly appreci-ated and a highlight of the Saturday Foray. Thanks are also extended to Town of Eagle for its support of the event.

The contributions of everyone, including the enthu-siastic participants make this festival so enjoyable for all.

Tom Boni, organizer

Epilogues at Loaded Joe’s, Avon

It’s probably safe to say that the most commonly asked question for a band is, “what do you sound like?” But after four years, The Epilogues still struggle to find an answer. The Epilogues began as two friends hoping to create something different in the Denver scene. After years of experimenting with tones and effects, as well as the additions of a drummer and a bassist, the band eventually stumbled onto the sound that would, in fact, set them apart from the rest. If you wanted to keep it vague, you could call them indie rock or even synth rock, but beyond that, the genre lines begin to blur. The show starts at 9 p.m. and is free.

Hit List at Finnegan’s, Avon

Some people’s musical tastes fit into a neat and clean little box. They only like one style of music, and they listen to it religiously - shunning all others. At least that’s hit List’s take on things. Hit List says if you’re one of those people, then they’re not for you. But the

vast majority of people don’t fit into one box, the group believes, and that’s the premise by which they cre-ate their live show -- a show for the enjoyment of the masses. Fans enjoy the seamless transitions from song to song -- sometimes hearing rock, country and hip-hop all in the same medley. However, the biggest impact comes from the musical ability and energetic perfor-mance that Hit List brings to the stage. The show starts at 9 p.m. and is free.

John McKay Band at the Dusty Boot, Eagle

John McKay has been playing guitar for over 25 yrs and has been composing his own material for nearly as long.

His first instrument was piano, which he started play-ing at the age of 10. At the age of 11 he switched over to playing drums and at the age of 15 he picked up the Bass and Guitar. From then on the Guitar became his main focus. Througout the years he played in various bands. In 1996 John earned a BA in Classical Guitar performance from the University of Colorado’s School of Music. Recently he has been performing with the Wiley Cotton Band, which is a band he put together to showcase a broader spectrum of his original material. The show runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and is free.

similar to Arizona’s law cracking down on illegal im-migration.

Rep. Kent Lambert of Colorado Springs was one of 11 GOP legislators from Colorado who met earlier this month with lawmakers in Arizona on copying that state’s law. He has reserved a bill title for a proposal, which is being reviewed by legislative legal staffers.

A federal judge has delayed the Arizona law’s most contentious provisions, including a section requiring officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws if they have “reasonable suspi-cion” that the person is in the country illegally.

Lambert says he’s confident Colorado legislators can write a bill that will stand up in court.

Recession blamed for fewer babies

The U.S. birth rate has dropped for the second year in a row, and experts think the wrenching recession led many people to put off having children. The 2009 birth rate also set a record: lowest in a century.

Births fell 2.7 percent last year even as the population grew, numbers released Friday by the National Center for Health Statistics show.

The U.S. birth rate has dropped for the second year in a row, and experts think the wrenching recession led many people to put off having children. The 2009 birth rate also set a record: lowest in a century.

“It’s a good-sized decline for one year. Every month is showing a decline from the year before,” said Stepha-nie Ventura, the demographer who oversaw the report.

Violence targets police, media in Mexico massacre

A car explodes outside a police station, another out-side a television station. A gang is suspected of mas-sacring 72 migrants. A prosecutor investigating those deaths suddenly disappears.

Mexico’s drug cartels seem to be adopting the tactics of war zones half a world away.

The violence appears to have contributed to fewer migrants crossing the border into the U.S., officials say, as they have to traverse some of Mexico’s most dangerous territory to get to Texas. Mexican officials,

meanwhile, warned that there likely will be more in the coming months.

“Violence will persist and even intensify,” President Felipe Calderon said at a forum on security where he vowed he would not back down.

Session probes livestock industry antitrust issuesCattle ranchers are clashing over a federal proposal

aimed at preserving competition in a livestock industry dominated by a handful of corporate giants.

Around 1,500 people from around the country filled four rooms at Colorado State University for a work-shop yesterday, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Department of Justice heard comments on the pro-posed rule. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack says consolidation along the food-supply chain will ulti-mately hurt consumers.

But ranchers who spoke yesterday sharply disagreed whether the proposed rule would help. The rule in-cludes provisions to make private sales contracts more transparent, make it easier to sue over anticompetitive behavior, and prevent sales between meatpackers.

Maes to ride silver bullet into governors office

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes has won the endorsement of Colorado beer magnate Pete Coors, a former U.S. Senate candidate.

Coors said yesterday that Maes will bring fresh lead-ership and a commitment to lower taxes and creating an environment to solve budget issues and create jobs.

Coors is chairman of the board for Molson Coors Brewing Co. and the University of Colorado Hospital Foundation. Maes will face Democrat John Hicken-looper in November.

immediately after the primary. But, she noted, her own campaign war chest is growing, and she’s ready to un-leash ads of her own.

Angle told a conservative group in Steamboat Springs about her latest ad that says Reid’s “tragic love story” with President Barack Obama and House Speak-er Nancy Pelosi is to blame for the country’s financial struggles.

“Harry Reid has become the poster child of what’s gone wrong in America in the last 18 months. And Ne-vada, his state, has become the example of what is go-ing to happen to the rest of our country if we don’t get going in a different direction,” Angle said, referring to figures that show Nevada leads the country in unem-ployment and foreclosures.

Angle, a tea party favorite, said she’s ready to un-leash attacks against her opponent.

“What has happened is that he had the money to begin that personal attack right after the primary and that’s exactly what’s he’s done,” Angle told about 100 people at the Steamboat Institute’s annual Freedom Conference. “I have been building a war chest to come back at him with those commercials.”

Blago hold-out jurordefends her stand

JoAnn Chiakulas, a retired state employee, turned out to be the lone holdout standing in the way of a convic-tion of the ousted governor on charges he tried to sell President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat.

Nine days after jurors deadlocked on all but one charge against Blagojevich, Chiakulas publicly de-fended her resolve for the first time in an interview published yesterday by the Chicago Tribune, filling out a picture of tense juror deliberations and feeding debate about her role. Chiakulas, 67, stood by her vote, saying she found Blagojevich’s statements captured on FBI wiretap recordings so disorganized and scattered that his actions did not amount to a criminal conspiracy.

“I thought he was just rambling,” she told the Tri-

Chiakulas, who had refused to respond to an on-slaught of media requests including several from The Associated Press, answered some but not all of the con-jecture about her that arose after the verdict –– from what her motives were to whether her past work as a state bureaucrat somehow colored how she saw actions that Blagojevich dismissed as routine political “horse-trading.”

One of the world’s tiniest frogs—barely larger than a pea—has been found living in and around carnivorous plants on Borneo island, one of the scientists who made the accidental discovery said Thursday.

Indraneil Das, a scientist at University Malaysia Sarawak, said he and another scientist from Germany were doing field research on frogs in Malaysia’s Sara-wak state on Borneo island when they chanced on the tiny species on the edge of a road leading to the summit of a mountain in the Kubah National Park in 2006.

“For biologists, this is a curiosity,” Das told The As-sociated Press.

The frogs were named Microhyla nepenthicola after the pitcher plant species where they live, Das said. A Malaysian museum had listed the species but misiden-tified it as juveniles of another frog species, he said.

Sharpton: Beck rally goes against King’s vision

Broadcaster Glenn Beck and tea party activists have a right to rally in the nation’s capital but not to distort Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision, the Rev. Al Sharpton said yesterday. Sharpton described the demonstration planned for Saturday by Beck and his supporters as an anti-government rally advocating states’ rights. And he said that goes against the message in King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, in which the civil rights leader appealed to the federal government to ensure equality.

Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally will be held at the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his speech exactly 47 years earlier. Beck and other organizers say the aim is to pay tribute to America’s military personnel and others “who embody our nation’s founding prin-ciples of integrity, truth and honor.” The broadcaster toured the site yesterday as supporters cheered.

Sharpton isn’t the only one upset with circumstance surrounding the event.

Leaders in the nation’s capital said they were offend-ed by a tea party blogger’s warning to those attending to avoid two of Washington’s subway lines because they go through certain neighborhoods. Many parts of the city are safe, he wrote, “but why chance it if you don’t know where you are?”

D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray, who is run-ning for mayor, invited visitors into the city’s neighbor-

ATHLETIC STUFF22-year-old Day leads BarclaysA tournament that once looked as though it might be-

long to Tiger Woods shifted late yesterday to the hands of the 22-year-old Australian Jason Day.

Day showed great golfing promise with three late birdies for a 4-under 67 and a one-shot lead. Nine play-ers had at least a share of the lead at some point during the second round until Day’s late surge. He finished at 8-under 134, one shot clear of Kevin Streelman (63) and Vaughn Taylor (70) going into the weekend of the FedEx Cup’s first playoff event.

Woods didn’t so much lose his patience as much as his putting stroke. He wound up with a 73, eight shots worse than his opening round.

The good news for the world’s No. 1 player—he will stay atop the world ranking for at least another week af-ter Phil Mickelson missed the cut. Woods is four shots behind after yesterday’s action, and takes the confi-dence of only two missed fairways into the weekend.

Spanish Vuelta begins todayOne of cycling’s Grand Tours, the Spanish Vuelta

begins today with riders hoping to snag a victory in Alberto Contador’s absence.

This 65th edition of the Tour of Spain opens with a night team time trial through the winding streets of Seville and ends 21 stages and 2,081 miles later in Ma-drid on Sept. 19.

The race will heavily favor mountain specialists, in-cludes six mountaintop finishes, one more than in 2009. A stage ending at Pal ski station brings the Pyrenees back onto the route after being left out in 2009.

Tour de France winner and Madrid native Alberto Contador is the most glaring absentee, while last year’s winner, Alejandro Valverde, will not race due to a two-year doping suspension. And with Samuel Sanchez—last year’s runner-up—also missing, the stage is set for

a group of young talents and veteran racers to compete in the last major road race of the year.

Andy Schlek looks likely to make an impact af-ter matching Contador for almost the entire Tour de France, eventually finishing just 39 seconds behind the three-time champion. Schlek will ride in support of brother Frank, who has recovered from a broken col-larbone in the Tour.

Denis Menchov, a Vuelta veteran with titles in 2005 and ’07, will be a favorite for a third after his third-place finish in Paris.

Carlos Sastre, the 2008 Tour champion, has twice finished runner-up and victory this year would be a remarkable achievement for a 35-year-old rider who is taking part in all three major races. Sastre finished eighth in the Giro d’Italia and 20th in this year’s Tour.

MLB pitcher robbed at gunpoint Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Yovani Gallardo and

clubhouse attendant Alex Sanchez were robbed at gun-point early yesterday morning, hours after Milwaukee’s ace pitched in a loss to the Dodgers.

“It was a scary moment for me, obviously for me and Alex, and those are tough situations,” Gallardo said yesterday afternoon, about 14 hours after the robbery occurred. “Things like that happen in every city, any-where you go and it’s just unfortunate that it happened to me and him.”

Gallardo did not take any questions after briefly dis-cussing the incident outside the team clubhouse be-fore the start of the Brewers’ three-game series against Pittsburgh.

“Just going out there, getting a bite to eat before heading home, trying to stay out of trouble, and unfor-tunately trouble finds us,” he said. “Nobody was seri-ously hurt and we’re all OK. Both of us are fine. That was the main thing.”

tense. There’s really no way to practice it, so I’m kind of going into it cold.”

It will be Sutter’s first Scott Firefighter Combat Chal-lenge. He says he hopes to not get absolutely destroyed by his friend and former Vail firefighter Bryan Cash, who now works for Englewood’s FD.

“It’s a competitive group. If I trip and fall, I’ll never hear the end of it,” Sutter said.

One of Sutter’s favorite challenges was his most re-cent, the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race. He fin-ished with a time of 8:31:05.7 and was in the top 10 percent of more than 1,000 participants.

In previous 10.10.10 events, Sutter finished 2nd in his division in the Ultimate Mountain Challenge at the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, CO, and in the top 2 percent out of more than 50,000 runners in the Bolder Boulder 2010 10K Race in Boulder.

Sutter also recently completed the Ironman Lake Placid in 11:06:37 on July 25, the Xterra Mountain Championship triathlon in Avon with a time of 2:46:07,

and placed 8th out of 25 in his age bracket at the Fire-cracker 50 Mountain Bike Race in Breckenridge with a time of 4:33:58.

Sutter will compete in four more of America’s most grueling athletic competitions, including the NYC Marathon and 24 Hours of Moab, to raise awareness and $100,000 in donations. Sutter’s mission is to in-spire 10,000 people to each donate $10 in support of First Descents as the leader of Team FD, a group of cancer survivors and their supporters who compete in athletic events across the country to raise funds and awareness for First Descents.

Event parking is extremely limited in Ford Park and at the Vail Athletic Field. During major events there is usually a fee to park at either of these two locations. However, throughout the non-ski season months, the Town of Vail provides more than 2,500 spaces of free parking. sible and give everyone a chance to play, the soccer club is more com-petitive, says Dressler. As a coach, this allows him to focus on the finer parts of the game.

But he says the club makes also an effort to give all kids who are ready to play at a competitive level the chance to play.

“Part of our goal is to prepare these kids for future success,” says Dressler.

The Vail Valley Soccer Club has been in the valley since 1989 and is a part of the larger Colorado Youth Soccer Association. Many youth as-sociation teams will be among the 100 or so visiting the valley to play the 11th Annual Vail Valley Cup, hosted by the Vail Valley Soccer Club in October.

The club is looking for spon-sors for the tournament. It’s a good

business opportunity, since a lot of players and parents will be coming from out of the valley, says Kerry Skidmore, who has three kids in the program.

Skidmore said the teams of girls and boys ranging from eight to 18 travel statewide, and even to Wyo-ming to play games. Teams play one to two games per weekend, and prac-tice three times a week. That much practice, and that many games makes this a commitment for the kids and their families. In addition to practice and games, the kids involved in the program work hard to raise funds to support the club, as well.

“I think being a part of a team sport teaches hard work and deter-mination,” Skidmore said. “It’s a huge part of their growth and devel-opment.”

But it isn’t all work. One of the

best things about the club is meet-ing a variety of other kids, said Skidmore, adding that the program has helped her children get to know people they might not associate with otherwise.

“It gives me the chance to meet people I wouldn’t have met,” said 12-year-old Jack Skidmore, whose team is one-third Hispanic. “I’ve learned how to make new friends. Coach has taught me a lot about dedication, and not to be a sore loser.”

The club doesn’t turn anyone down for lack of funds, and there is a scholarship program for kids whose parents can’t afford the costs. The scholarship program is supported by the teams’ fundraising efforts. To make a donation to The Vail Valley Soccer Club, visit their website at www.vailsoccer.com.

‘We all thought we were going to die’Passengers on a British Airways flight

from London to Hong Kong were mis-takenly told to prepare for a crash land-ing, causing panic onboard.

The carrier said yesterday it had apol-ogized for causing customers distress af-ter an emergency message was acciden-tally triggered. Passengers were warned during a flight Tuesday that the Boeing 747 may crash into the sea. They heard the message: “This is an emergency. We may shortly need to make an emergency landing on water.”

Michelle Lord, who was onboard, told Britain’s The Sun tabloid that her fellow travelers were deeply frightened when the taped warning was played over the airliner address system.

“People were terrified. We all thought we were going to die,” said Lord, 32.

British Airways said cabin crew quick-ly reassured passengers that the flight was not in danger. The company said it is investigating how the error happened.

Officials: Suspect ambushed, killed

Utah deputy A fugitive thought to be hiding in the

wilderness on the Arizona-Utah line laid in wait and ambushed a Utah sheriff’s deputy who was pursuing him after an attempted burglary, fatally shooting the deputy with a high-powered rifle, au-

thorities said yesterday.Scott Curley, 23, hid beneath a tree in

the small town of Fredonia just south of the Utah border and waited for two pur-suing deputies to get closer, when Cur-ley raised his rifle and shot at the depu-ties, killing 41-year-old Kane County Deputy Brian Harris, a married father of two. Harris was hit from between 40 and 150 feet away.

A massive manhunt was under way for Curley, who fled into the wilder-ness covered with rock formations and caves. Curley was familiar with the area and may have stashed food and supplies in caves and cliffs described as “spider holes,” his friends told investigators.

Authorities at Bangkok’s international airport found a baby tiger cub that had been drugged and hidden alongside a stuffed toy tiger in the suitcase of a woman flying from Thailand to Iran, an official and a wildlife protection group said yesterday.

The woman, a Thai national, had checked in for her flight and her over-weight bag was sent for an X-ray which showed what appeared to be a live ani-mal inside, according to TRAFFIC, a wildlife trade monitoring group.

The woman was arrested at Suvarnab-humi Airport before boarding her flight last Sunday. The cub, estimated to be about 3 months old, was sent to a wild-life conservation center in Bangkok.
