Where do we start?

• Understand range of opportunities

• Most of the programmes will last from 2007-2013

• Strategic objectives behind EU funding

• Be clear about your own objectives!

• Be aware of what EU funding can and can’t provide

• Be realistic about the timescales involved

• Find the relevant information sources (work programme, call document, financial guidance…)

• Address Commission defined topic/ strategic priority very clearly

Reimbursement of Costs:Special Transition Rate – 60%

Calculate the direct costs:

• RTD Costs = €100,000

• Demonstration Costs = €100,000

• Management Costs: = €100,000

Calculate the indirect costs:

• RTD: €100,000 x 0.6 = €60,000

• Demo: €100,000 x 0.6 = €60,000

• Mgt: €100,000 x 0.6 = €60,000

Reimbursement as follows:

RTD: 75% of (€100,000 + €60,000) = €120,000

Demo: 50% of (€100,000 + €60,000) = €80,000

Mgt: 100% of (€100,000 + €60,000) = €160,000

Note that any subcontract costs must be taken out of the direct costs to calculate the correct indirect costs.

Total to be reimbursed = € 360,000

FP7 Overall Picture

• Good response to first call (in some areas more than others)• ERC StG - 9,167 proposals (~250 to be

awarded)• FAFB – 14/78 topics with no proposals being

funded, including 2 topics with no proposals submitted

• SSH success rates per area in First Call varied from 9 to 26%

• Some areas see more problems with EPSS and eligibility issues than others• ICT: 4/1840 ineligible (<0.3%)• SSH: 39/ 531 ineligible (>7%)• FAFB: 17/414 ineligible (4%) (11 requested too

much EC contribution; 6 with too few participants)

What made a good proposal?

• Clear work plan provided in proposal, with work packages all contributing to overall objective• Responded to a serious industrial problem• Represented step forward from current state of the art• Strong potential impact if successful• Potential for generating high added value (for industry/ EU) • Risk management plans clearly identified

‘Implementation’ was not evaluated

What made a bad proposal?

• No clear EU added-value• Lack of clarity in objectives• Limited progress beyond state of the art• Overlaps rather than builds on similar FP6 projects• Feasibility of the proposed project/ approach not clear• Dissemination plans limited in scope• Proposal ‘too academic’ – not enough industrial relevance. Low impact on world markets and EU industry
