Residents of south Ottawaare so anxious to see abridge finally built acrossthe Rideau River that thearea councillor is serious-ly considering setting upbleachers so people canwatch the work.

“People are excited. They’re interested. We’regoing to have to accom-modate some way for peo-ple to watch the project asit happens,” said Glouces-ter-South Nepean Coun.

Desroches said theymay look into cameras sopeople can keep up todate on the work.

The 143-metre-longbridge is being built onland, and will be slid intoplace in 2012. Desrochessaid he even plans to con-tact producers at the Dis-covery Channel to see if

“This is going to be anengineering feat,” saidDesroches.

“I don’t know if it willmake it, but I know thereare a lot of people whowill find this very inter-esting.”

Along with the work toconnect the bridge to roadson each side, the projectwill cost $105 million.

Leak was‘wrong’:Hillier Canada’s former chief ofdefence staff, Rick Hillier, says human error is likelyto blame for a leaked U.S.document that suggestsfour Canadian soldierswho died in Afghanistanin 2006 were killed byfriendly fire.

The country’s former chiefstatistician says he quit hisjob when it became appar-ent his agency had suf-fered a hit to its credibility.

An emotional MunirSheikh, who resigned hispost last week, told a Houseof Commons committeethat he could not stand atthe helm of Statistics Cana-da once it was reported hisagency had recommendedscrapping the mandatorylong-form census.

“The reason I steppedaside was because of somemedia stories that StatisticsCanada was not just imple-menting the decision, butrecommending it.”

Fears of an economic slow-down or worse are drain-ing consumer confidencein both Canada and theUnited States, two new sur-veys suggest.

The Conference Board ofCanada said Tuesday thatits survey of consumersshowed Canadians becom-ing less bullish about theirprospects, with confidencedropping for the secondstraight month in July.

And unlike in June, when gloom was restrictedto Ontario and British Co-lumbia, the think-tank saysthis time all regions aremore bearish, particularlyon the question of futurejob prospects.

The results were thesame in the U.S. reading, asconfidence also fell for thesecond straight month.

In a relative grading ofwhere the two economiesstand, however, the latestsoftening pushed the Cana-dian index to 80, comparedto the 50 level south of theborder.

Analysts said the majordifference in the readingsis the disparate employ-ment situations in the twocountries. In recentmonths, Canadian jobgrowth has been fargreater than expected — a93,000 pick-up in June —while the U.S. has seen itsjob growth stall and evenfall back with a 125,000loss during the samemonth.

A more telling indicatoris the gap between thecountries’ employment ra-tio. In Canada, 62.1 percent of working age indi-viduals were working inJune, compared to only58.5 per cent in the U.S.,despite less stringent crite-ria.THE CANADIAN PRESS

In Cats and Dogs: The Re-venge of Kitty Galore, singer, actress and all-around entertainer BetteMidler got to sink herteeth into the titular vil-lain, a hairless cat hell-bent on worlddomination. And Midleradmits the desire to takeover the world was prettyeasy to relate to.

“I think a lot of femaleentertainers think aboutthat when they start out,”she says. “I did.”

But as for her characterturning evil after an on-the-job accident causesher fur to fall out, Midlerinsists that’s where theydiffer. “Something hap-pens to my hair in real lifeevery day and I don’t,” shesays with a laugh.

Dealing with hair is-sues is something she saysshe learned about earlyon in her career. “A longtime ago when I first start-

ed in the theatre, I was inFiddler on the Roof, andone of the girls in Fiddlerwas a Puerto Rican girl,”Midler remembers.

“The opening night, she had done somethingto her hair, she had triedto straighten her hair orsomething, and her hairfell out. Literally. And shedidn’t even blink. Shewent out, she got a piece, she slapped it on, she

went out, she gave theperformance of her life. And I never forgot that. From that time on, I neverthought twice. I just lookaround, grab a piece, putit on and go.”

Of course, doing voicework for her latest filmdidn’t require much con-cern about her hair. “It’snot just isolating, it’slonely,” she says of therecording sessions. “Be-

cause it’s just you in adark room with a sketchof a character or some-times a filled-in scene, butyou don’t work with theother actors. It’s like onelong looping session, Isaid. It’s like, ‘Oh my God,ADR for days.’”

As much as her felinecounterpart is determinedto destroy the world, Mi-dler has been working formore than a decade on

For example, the quality ofa response will differ whensent from a desk thanwhile walking to the sub-way.They ignore the relation-ship quotient, meaningthere is more to a conver-sation than just thecontent.People reply in the samemedium if the message ismisunderstood. While it’s fun to stock upon posters, shower caddiesand desk lamps, expertssay you also should consid-er how you’ll keep your-self, and your stuff, safe oncampus.

Common sense is thebest defence, says ChrisMcGoey, who runs a secu-rity business in Los Ange-les and consults oncampus safety.

“It’s all about access. Inmost incidents, victimswere careless, unawareand too trusting,” he says.

In dorm suites and hall-ways, there may be visitorsyou don’t know. Manyfirst-year students like toadopt an “open-door” poli-cy when they get movedinto dorms. But that’s aninvitation to would-bethieves.

“If you have a computer, laptop or other electronic

equipment, tether it tosomething solid using a se-curity cable,” advise the“college life” editors at theschool-advice site Spar-kNotes.com.

There are also motion-sensor locks for laptops. And Orbicule’s Undercoveris a monitoring device foryour Mac, iPhone or iPad;for a student price of $39US, the downloadable soft-

ware will snap a photo ofthe person who took yourMac and track the IP ad-dress anywhere in theworld — information thatcan be given to police. Inthe meantime, lockout fea-tures prevent the thieffrom accessing anythingon the computer.

As for smaller valuables, some students suggestkeeping them in a trunk— the kind you take tosummer camp — with acombination lock. Trunksalso make handy night-stands.

Jeff Gawronski of Dorm-Co.com, an online retailerthat sells dorm securityitems, says his biggest sell-er is a room safe. Safesthese days have beenscaled down to look less in-timidating in a dormroom.THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

I (heart) MoneyAuthor: David CampbellLesterPublisher: DCL Capital PressPrice: $24.99Money is a curious thing. The very essence of its pur-pose is to drive commerce, meaning, it’s there to helpyou buy that thing youlove. It is no wonder thenthat we have an ingrainedability to spend rather than

save. Financial coach andauthor, David CampbellLester, suggests in his bookI (heart) Money, that weneed to take a different ap-proach to managing ourmoney, loving it. Accordingto Lester, how youapproach money, shouldstart with how you respectit, even how you carry it.“Do you keep it all bundledup in your pants or wallet?Do you go commando (notcarry an at all)?” Lester’sbook provides some key in-sight to managing yourmoney, also pointing out

that having a healthy rela-tionship with money willtrickle down into havinghealthy personal relation-ships. Look back at anyfirst date, he says, the firsttwo questions out of some-one’s mouth are ‘where doyou live?’ (Translation:What kind of real estatecan you afford?) and ‘whatdo you do?’ (Translation:How much money do youmake?). Dallas Cowboys rookie re-ceiver Dez Bryant said henever expected his refusalto carry Roy Williams’shoulder pads to becomesuch an big deal.

The first-round pick alsosaid he didn’t know thatrookies carrying the pads ofveterans after practice wasa long-standing ritual.

“I told Roy this, I said if

that situation was going toturn out that big, he couldhave walked in with histights on,” Bryant said aftera team’s practice yesterday.“I would have took hisshoulder pads, his pants, his helmet, his socks, hisshoes. Five no-hitters, two perfectgames and another gemthat was spoiled by an um-pire.

By now, San FranciscoGiants broadcaster MikeKrukow and others aroundbaseball are beginning toexpect a piece of pitchinghistory every week.

“I do. I can’t explain it,”said Krukow, who pitchedin the majors from 1976-89.“Amazing. I think it’s prettycool. The Year of the Pitch-er.”

Matt Garza tossed TampaBay’s first no-hitter Mondaynight in a 5-0 victory overthe Detroit Tigers, becom-

ing the fifth big leaguer toturn the trick during a sea-son of mastery on themound.

The last time there werefive no-hitters in one yearwas 1991, when Hall ofFamer Nolan Ryan threwone of seven in the majors. Now, arms are in chargeagain — so much so thatno-hit alerts seem common-place.

Ho hum, anothershutout. Complete game?Yawn.

“Pitching has gotten bet-ter,” Rays manager Joe Mad-don said. “I don’t know thatthe hitting has gone back a

bit, but the pitching hasdefinitely gotten better.”

The numbers back himup. Fourteen times a pitch-er has carried a no-hitter in-to the eighth inning thisyear. That’s the mostthrough July 26 since atleast 1974, as far back assuch records go at STATSLLC. As a comparison, ithappened six times by thatdate last season.

“I don’t know if there areany explanations for it,”Minnesota manager RonGardenhire said. “It runs incycles and you just gothrough it.”THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

I’ve never figured out whysome cultures perform raindances in dry weather; allthey need to do is give me aconvertible to drive. Myweek with the 2011 Mit-subishi Eclipse Spyder in-cluded rain every singleday, but I braved the sprin-

kles for the joy of drivingwith the roof down.

The Spyder has faults, but on a summer’s day, it’seasy to forgive them oncethe top stows away.

There’s no 2010 model:Its production dates wouldhave released it in the deadof winter, and so Mit-subishi Canada wentstraight from 2009 to 2011.

There are two versions: theGS, at $30,498, uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine,while my tester, the$35,998 GT-P, contains a3.8-litre V6. Mine used asix-speed manual transmis-sion, while a six-speed au-tomatic can be added for$1,200.

The 265-horsepower V6 isa work of art. It’s strong

and smooth, with a deli-ciously throaty exhaustnote; the clutch is light, theshifter is precise, and it’ssimply a joy.

The outside is gorgeous, and the inside is too. Theheated sport seats are heav-ily bolstered, and whencombined with my tester’sorange exterior shade, theinterior is three-tone.

EXPLORER NEW CHAPTER IN SUV STORY

In the lastdecade, theybecame some-what vilifiedand watchedhelplessly as

their devotees changedstripes, and embracedcar-based crossovers.

This decade we’re see-ing the actual vehicleschanging stripes. Onceproud truck-based SUVs

nameplates are nowswitching over to car-based platforms. Earlierthis year we saw Kia Sor-rento make the move.

And just this weekFord introduced its newgeneration Explorer, thefirst Explorer to go “uni-body” and to offer front-wheel-drive versions, inaddition to its AWD ver-sions.

The Explorer move is

significant, because thenameplate is credited asthe major force behindthe initial SUV tsunami.

In its first year of pro-duction (1990), Explorersold 14 million units. Ithelped turn a niche vehi-cle into the mostdominant one of the era.

I think the clearest ex-planation of why the phe-nomenon developed back

then came from JohnRock, once a vice-president of GM. Heobserved that traditionalcar buyers at the time“just loved truck-basedpowertrains.”

At Ford Canada’sreveal of the 2011 Explor-er, I caught up with PaulF. Roy, the company’smarketing director.

He noted that current

customers are not hungup on which vehicle isbody-on-frame orunibody; they’re more in-terested in what the vehi-cle can do, than thenature of itsconstruction.

He added that Exploreris a name that continuesto resonate, and there isa swath of buyers whoprefer the more, rugged

SUV vibe. They just wantthat vibe in a more fuel-efficient and sophisticat-ed package.

So now we have anoth-er niche — a car-basedcrossover that’s trying tochannel some old-schooltruck-based SUV mojo. Atfirst I thought, “naw, doesn’t feel right.” NowI’m thinking, “why thehell not?”

The Sport Utility Vehicle, or SUV, is an interesting phenomenon. Before the 1980s,they were uncommon and an acquiredtaste, like certain foreign cheeses, or themovies of Rainer Werner Fassbinder.During the 1990s they took over thelandscape. Like it or not, some Canadi-an families simply needthe ruggedness, capabilityand power served up by a4x4 SUV. If your family re-quires one such model totow a boat, tackle the cot-tage trail or access week-end adventures viauncharted territory, there

are several worthy optionsto consider in the usedmarket.

The new Sorento is nowon sale at Kia dealerships, leaving the former value-priced model in the usedmarket with a praised lad-der-frame structure and re-al 4x4 transfer case withlow-range gearing. Thesetwo attributes form the ba-sis for real-world sport utetoughness that gear theSorento towards a shopperactually planning to worktheir machine a little withsome towing or off-roading.

Sorento was powered byone of several V6 engines.Earlier models got a 3.5 litreunit with 192 horsepower, while a 3.8 litre, 262 horse-power V6 was also available.Later in the Sorento’s life, a3.3 litre, 242-horsepowerengine joined the lineup, and shoppers can look for afour or five-speed automat-

ic, as well as the rarer five-speed manual transmission.

What Owners LikeValue, equipment levels

and styling are rated high-ly by last-generation Soren-to owners, as are a safe andconfident driving feel thatcomes as part of a tallheight and solid ride. Fit

What Owners HateStandard 4x4 com-

plaints regarding fuelmileage top the list of last-generation Sorento ownergripes, along with a “thin”paint job and some interiornoises and rattles.
