WHAT’S BEING A MISSIONARY ALL ABOUT?

MISSION WORK IS ABOUT GOING INTO ALL THE WORLD

• Jesus instructed His disciples to go into all the world.• “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and

on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt 28:18-19).• “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the

Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem” (Lk 24:46-47).• “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has

come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

• Some claim that the Great Commission doesn’t really apply to us today.• The apostles weren’t to carry out the Commission

until they received power from on high.• “Teaching them to observe all things that I have

commanded you” (Matt 28:20).• Had Jesus not just taught the disciples to go into all

the world with His message?

• Must we go to a foreign field?• It’s been more than 15 years since I have done

that.• Scripture does not support that conclusion.• The disciples were to begin their mission work at home

(Acts 1:8).• “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then

comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (Jn 4:35).

MISSION WORK IS ABOUT PREACHING THE GOSPEL

• In the first century, Christians preached the gospel.• “Those who were scattered went everywhere

preaching the word. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them” (Acts 8:4-5).• “When they believed Philip as he preached the

things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized” (Acts 8:12).• “I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the

blood of all men. For I have not shunned to declare to you the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:26-27).

• Preaching the “whole counsel of God” means preaching God’s love and His judgment.• “The love of Christ compels us, because we judge

thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again” (2 Cor 5:14-15).• When Paul was before Felix, “he reasoned about

righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come” (Acts 24:25).

• Mission work preaches the love of God.• Because God loves us, we can have our sins

forgiven.• God “has delivered us from the power of darkness and

conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Col 1:13-14).

• Because God loves us, we can have eternal life.• “God so loved the world that He gave His only

begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (Jn 3:16).

• “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (Jn 5:24).

• Mission work preaches the coming wrath of God.• Rom 14:10-12.• “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the

living God” (Heb 10:31).

MISSION WORK IS ABOUT REACHING ALL PEOPLE

• The gospel is for all—regardless of race.• “A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus

said to her, ‘Give Me a drink’” (Jn 4:7).• Philip “arose and went. And behold, a man of

Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship” (Acts 8:27).

• There can be no social prejudices in missions.• Jesus forgave a likely prostitute when she came

and anointed His feet with oil (Lk 7:36-50).• Js 2:1-4.

• Why is the gospel a universal call?• All people stand in need of God’s forgiveness

(Rom 3:10-17).• Jesus died for all people.• “One died for all” (2 Cor 5:14).• Therefore, we must take the Gospel to all.
