Northwest Suppliers of Major Sporting Events

1. Introduction Businesses in the Northwest are familiar with supplying major sporting events. The hosting of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester saw 250 businesses from the region secure contracts worth £22 million. Many of these companies have gone on to supply other major sporting events within and outside the region. The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) has compiled a directory of these companies to help event organisers access their expertise. To qualify for inclusion in the directory, every company has had to demonstrate a proven, successful and recent track record of supply to a major sporting event, backed up by references to confirm that they met the standard required by the organiser. 2. Track record of Northwest-based companies

Northwest-based companies have supplied products and services to major sporting events and venues across the world, including the 2004 Athens Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup, and the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games to name but a few. The Commonwealth Games was the largest sporting event to be held in the UK and, with 900,000 tickets sold, proved that the Northwest had the skills and capabilities required to run a multidisciplinary, international sporting event. The organisation and planning that went on behind the scenes was vast – arranging accommodation and food, transport, medical support, leisure facilities and security which all helped make the Games such a memorable event for those watching and taking part. Building from this we have retained and developed a highly-trained workforce with experience of working in major sporting environments. 3. Structure and companies

Northwest companies can supply the necessary goods and services for the different stages of an event; from the conceptual and planning stages, through the project design and construction to the delivery of the actual event and legacy of the event. Bidding and planning stages: This category covers early stage services concerned with the feasibility, bidding and planning for hosting major events, including transport and security planning, economics, insurance and legal issues. Venue design, construction, fit out and overlay: The venue category covers the design, construction, fit out and overlay of goods and services to ensure the venue is ready to host the event. Event delivery: The event delivery category covers the goods and services required to run and mange the event itself, such as catering, security and crowd control, medical services, ticketing, printing, transport and accommodation. Marketing, communications and media: This category includes representing and reporting the event to the outside world. Promoting events is a key part of event delivery. It encompasses everything from press coverage and event-


branded items to the opening and closing ceremonies. Human resources: Human resource services required cover planning, training and supplying the people who will deliver the event, including volunteers. Legacy: This category covers two key areas. Firstly, there can be additional construction work involved in dismantling and relocating temporary venues used by the event and the redevelopment of existing venues into their long-term use. In addition, most events now incorporate cultural, social, sporting and educational programmes into part of the wider delivery of an event. This can create a significant number of additional projects that will require goods and services to be delivered. 4. Northwest sporting successes As the UK’s leading region for sport, with a world-class reputation for hosting major world and European events, it is no surprise that the Northwest continues to attract some of the most famous and prestigious sporting occasions from across the globe. From the BT Paralympic World Cup to the Open Golf Championship, the Northwest never fails to excite or deliver. The region’s commitment to sport and sporting events was recognised at the Sport Business Sports Event Management Awards 2008. Manchester won the gold medal in the Sports City Award category and the silver medal in the Event Marketing category for the Manchester World Sport 08 campaign. 5.
