“When I joined the Marine Corps in 1955, spending the next 54 years as a

member of this brotherhood was not my intention. The Corps has become a way of

life and one of which I am proud to have been a part. I have been blessed to have

served with, led and learned from the finest men and women I have ever known. I

have witnessed feats of remarkable courage and unstinting selflessness.

I have been inspired, encouraged and heartened as I have watched the newer

generations carry on traditions and hold fast the values that set the Corps apart.

I am secure in the knowledge that I leave the Corps I have served in the best

of hands.” –MajorGeneralR.DonaldGardner,USMC(Ret)
