Integrated Systems Europe: the AV tradeshow that doesn’t know how to stop growing

ISE by numbers 2004-2009Since its launch in 2004, Integrated Systems Europe has grown spectacularly to become the region’s un-disputed No.1 show for professional AV and electronic systems integration. From modest beginnings, the event has come to define this fast-growing industry, acting as a magnet for manufacturers, distributors, integrators and facilities managers alike.

In 2009, ISE defied the downward trend experienced by many tradeshows in adjacent industries by once again posting record numbers of both exhibitors and attendees. Our total number of exhibitors was 564 (up from 484 in 2008), while overall attendance stood at 24,912 – up from 22,199 the previous year. The latter was particularly pleasing, given the freak weather conditions which caused many would-be attendees to change their travel plans at the last minute.

Drivers for growth

While some areas of consumer electronics have suf-fered in the global economic climate, professional AV and electronic systems integration has proved to be a robust and resilient business. A key reason for this is that AV solutions enable end-customers to control their costs in a number of ways. Whether it is colla-borative conferencing systems resulting in reduced travel budgets, digital signage eliminating the need for printed advertising material, or home automati-on bringing better control over heating and lighting bills…our industry has an answer to the problems posed by challenging economic times.

By bringing all these solutions together under one roof, ISE 2010 will again demonstrate the ability of systems integration to deliver new cost-saving ideas to a range of end-user groups that is now broader than ever – from government, healthcare, education and military, to businesses of all kinds and, not least, private individuals.

Opportunities for education

Always more than merely a tradeshow, ISE benefits hugely from being supported by two not-for-profit tra-de associations, CEDIA and InfoComm and Internati-onal. All proceeds from our event are re-invested into marketing both the show and our industry in general to the wider world, while both associations also lead the way in promoting ISE as a centre of education for attendees.

In 2009, CEDIA and InfoComm between them hosted more than 50 classes, ranging from informal, 45-minute drop-in sessions to full-day seminars where attendance counts towards the attainment of recog-nised industry qualifications.

ISE 2010 will see yet another increase in the number and range of association classes on offer, together with exhibitor-led sessions which, again, have grown in number every year since the show’s inception.

Locations for business

Having settled in Amsterdam since 2007, ISE is now an annual fixture at the city’s RAI centre and last year benefited from the addition of the new Elicium building, where a dedicated Digital Signage Zone was located for the first time. Conveniently located for Amsterdam city centre and surrounded by high-quality hotels and nightlife options, the RAI is also easily reached from Schiphol airport by those visitors requiring only a day-trip.

As one of Europe’s most important air and rail hubs, Amsterdam is easily accessible from across the con-tinent and beyond, its location playing a major part in ISE’s highly international attendee profile. In 2009, our show saw substantial increases in attendance from three of Europe’s key geographic AV markets: France (20%), Germany (30%), and Italy (50%).

Integrated Systems Europe: some key areas of business for 2010

Focus on...digital signage

ISE 2009 saw the inauguration of our Digital Signa-

ge Zone – a dedicated area for new hardware and

software solutions that was specially designed to

showcase this fast-growing sector of technology. ISE

2010 will see further Zones added and there will also

be another chance for exhibitors to add screens to

our Digital Signage Wall at the rear of Hall 12 of the

Amsterdam RAI.

Viewpoint from 2009: “ISE has set the bar high for

others to follow and managed to pull off a DS Zone

that actually works. It was a truly fantastic event in

Amsterdam – in fact, ‘outstanding’ does not even

begin to describe how good it was!”

Adrian Cotterill, DailyDOOH (media partner)

Focus on...residential systems

Home cinema and automation technologies have been

a key part of ISE from the beginning, and as more and

more of Europe’s commercial AV integrators become

aware of the potential of the residential market, the

sector’s influence is only going to increase. As in pre-

vious years, ISE 2010 will see a dedicated Residential

Solutions Area, with many other exhibitors showing

‘mixed use’ products throughout the show floor.

Viewpoint from 2009: “All of our suppliers and visitors

tell us that ISE is the single most important European

tradeshow, and most of them have already committed

to attending next year. A fantastic show!” Raf Willems,

New Invor (exhibitor)

Focus on...pro-audio

More audio companies exhibited at ISE 2009 than at

any previous show, and 2010 looks set to see this

trend continue. High-quality audio is seen as incre-

asingly important by the AV and systems integration

communities, with retail, cinema, sports, conferencing

and hotels among the many applications now deman-

ding better sound to accompany their visual content.

Viewpoint from 2009: “This show just keeps on getting

better and better. We met a systems integrator from

Marlow in the UK, only a few miles from our factory,

who we had never met before. That company has

never been to [tradeshows in] Frankfurt or London.”

Simon Bull, Martin Audio (exhibitor)

Focus on...rental and staging

Systems integration is not just about installing fixed

systems into buildings. The convergence of automated

lighting with video, together with increasing demands

for wireless audio, show control and other core inte-

grator technologies, is making the meeting and live

events market ever more important to AV professio-

nals. The ISE Theatre plays a key role in educating our

attendees on best practice in rental system design,

and will again take ‘centre stage’ in 2010.

Viewpoint from 2009: “As far as we are concerned,

ISE is the only forum for dealer business. Everyone

who had a pre-arranged appointment showed up, and

we were also very busy with new customers.” Simon

Taylor, Lighthouse Technologies

Integrated Systems Europe: an event run for the industry, by the industry

Because ISE is owned by not-for-profit trade asso-ciations, it receives a level of marketing support that is unprecedented in our industry. In 2009, we spent the cash equivalent of over 800,000 euro on public relations, advertising and marketing, reaching out to over 100 printed and online publications with a com-bined audience of more than one million, right across Europe and beyond.

As well as our core audience of systems integrators, contractors, installers and consultants, our 2009 campaign targeted many additional channels inclu-ding end users in both the public and private sector, architects, interior designers, facilities managers,

advertising agencies and other multimedia professi-onals.A similar campaign will be mounted for ISE 2010, en-suring that all our exhibitors benefit from a high level of marketing activity that promotes not just our event but the industry it serves.

In 2009, we introduced an additional innovation: the Official ISE Invitation Card. Thousands of these Cards were distributed to our exhibitors, enabling them to do their own targeted customer mailings with results that were both meaningful and measurable. This was yet another example of ISE working alongside its exhibitors to ensure that the event is as successful as possible for all participating companies and, again, it will be repeated for 2010.

The ISE team: always ready to help

In 2008, ISE opened its own dedicated operations office in Amsterdam, just a short walk from the RAI exhibition centre. Staffed year-round by an experi-enced, multi-lingual team that has first-hand know-ledge of both the show and its venue, the office is at the disposal of exhibitors, all of whom are dealt with professionally and courteously.

Our sales and marketing personnel are also high-ly experienced, with over 50 years of AV industry expertise between them! As well as being tradeshow professionals, they are also specialists with a passi-on for the industry that has driven ISE’s spectacular growth over these past six years. Mike Blackman,

“The Digital Signage Zone was absolutely fabulous and we had a fantastic show. We have already rebooked for 2010.”Monique Severins, Scala Broadcast Multimedia (exhibitor, digital signage solutions)

“A wonderful opportunity to showcase our products and meet European distribu-tors and dealers. Our press conference was standing-room only.”Sandra Semple, SMART Technologies (exhibitor, interactive whiteboards and colla-borative working tools)

“We really like it here and the first day of the show was simply incredible! So many visitors to see, and of such good quality.”Stephanie Hoffgen, Lang AG (exhibitor, large-screen displays, rental and sta-ging)

“Our first time here, and by the second day we had exhausted our supply of bro-chures and business cards. We simply did not anticipate the huge number of visitors!”Frederick Ludock, MeMedia (exhibitor, business TV software and solutions)

“We are very happy with ISE and, in particular, the international feel of the show. We definitely be booking next year – and with a bigger booth space.”Dominique Corazolla, Wacom (exhibitor, wireless LCD and signature tablets)

“I was not expecting ISE to have as much ground-breaking technology as it did, and it certainly made me think of moving outside my ‘comfort zone’ when looking at manufacturers’ products.”Tom Hollingum, Bournemouth University (visitor, media services management)
