Get on the Ballot Chantilly Highlands needs resi-dents to come forward to run for our board of directors. Come January we will have a total of four board positions to fill.

Realize that you don’t have to be a rocket scientist or CEO of a company. Past board members have a variety of backgrounds and experience. Their diverse composi-tion helps to make our neighborhood a better place, bring-ing forth different and better ideas.

The one thing that board members need is a desire to make a difference in our community...your community. Joining the board will not only give you a better under-standing of what is involved in running our community, but it will introduce you to people who you might never otherwise meet.

Don’t be intimidated by the thought of becoming a board member. Current board members will be very willing to help you be successful. As a bonus, you will be able to further enhance your leadership skills, or utilize the ones you already have, and make a difference in your life and that of your family. Whether you have children or not, are young or not-so-young, you have a reason to get involved with your community. Your service on the board will not only help the community, but will likely improve your resumé.

If you have questions about what is involved, contact one of our current board members, who are listed on page 7 of this newsletter. If you would like to be a candidate and be added to the ballot, contact the board at [email protected].

Because our weather and emergency conditions are never predictable, make sure to set up plans for child care now. If schools close early, cancel for the day, or your child is sick and you are not able to leave work early or take a day off, you need to make sure that someone else is available to care for your child. Chantilly Highlands Homes Association Board Meeting Minutes Thursday, October 1, 2009

The Board did not have a quorum present. The members who were present discussed some security issues and ele-ments of next year's budget. We also discussed the need to reach out to the community to try to fill board vacan-cies. The next scheduled board meeting will be Wednes-day, November 4th at 7:30 PM at the Community Cen-ter (note change of new regular meeting day).

Community Center Scheduler Needed

This is a pretty easy way to give back to the community, especially if you like to meet people, and maybe use the

community center yourself. Interested parties should contact the board at [email protected].

Winter Wonderland Needs Help Volunteers are needed to coordinate and assist with the Winter Wonderland this year. Without volunteers it is very likely that this event will not happen this year. If you like to organize parties, this could be your way to give back to the community. Please contact the Michelle Doucette at [email protected].

Board Changes Monthly Meeting Day

Effective November, 2009, the Board of Di-rectors meeting will be the first Wednesday of the month, rather than the first Thursday. The meetings will still start at 7:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

Fairfax County Police News Releases Recent crime activity in our police district, while not in our

neighborhood, should be a reminder that we all need to remain attentive to our surroundings and security conscious. As al-ways, suspicious activity and persons should be reported to the police at 703-691-2131, unless it is an emergency and you should call 911.

All residents can stay informed by viewing reports or sub-scribing to receive emails of police news releases by going to www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/news-releases. This page lists recent press releases for the entire county, particularly helpful if you work in another police district. Also, on the right side of that web page is a text box titled “Email Subscription.” Click on Subscribe, enter your email address, and click on Continue. Follow the directions on the next page to begin receiving emails of police news releases as they come out of the Public Informa-tion Office of the Fairfax County Police Department.

Six Burglaries Linked in Fair Oaks Burglars hit two homes on Tuesday, October 6 and four

homes on Wednesday, October 7, all during the daylight hours. Jewelry, cash, and other valuables were stolen from all six resi-dences. Investigation suggests that these burglaries were possi-bly committed by the same individuals. None of the residents were home at the time. ♦ Two burglaries on Black Ironwood Drive ♦ Two burglaries on Timber Oak Trail ♦ Two burglaries on Highland Oaks Drive

Citizens are urged to call police if they witness any suspi-cious persons or activity, especially near houses where the resi-dents are not home. Additionally, citizens should secure valu-ables inside their homes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477, e-mail at www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text "TIP187" plus your mes-sage to CRIMES/274637 or call Fairfax County Police at 703-691-2131.

Jewelry Thefts Increase Fairfax County Police have seen an increase in jewelry thefts

in the Sully, Reston, and Fair Oaks Districts over the last few months. Overall burglaries in those areas have dropped by 21%, however, there was a 55% increase in burglaries involving sto-len jewelry over the last year.

Detectives are attributing these thefts to the recent increase in value of all precious metals, including gold, silver, and plati-num. Below are some tips to keep your gems safe:

♦ Always call police if you see people going door to door acting suspicious ♦ Keep all valuables out of sight ♦ Keep jewelry in a secure location ♦ Keep items made of precious metals secure ♦ Be mindful when discussing your valuables ♦ Document valuables with photos and serial numbers ♦ Always keep home and business entryways locked ♦ Always be aware of your surroundings

Motorists Warned to Be Alert for Deer The Fairfax County Police Department is launch-

ing its seasonal public awareness effort to remind motorists to be on the lookout for deer as they travel the roadways this fall. Studies show that nearly one in every 136 Virginia drivers will be involved in a deer-related crash over the next 12 months. In Fairfax County, 45 percent of all deer collisions are recorded in October and November.

During deer breeding season, October through December, adult deer are highly mobile. Deer are especially active from pre-dawn to mid-morning and from dusk to early evening. These periods of deer activity correspond with traveling com-muters, as well as students en route to and from school.

Fairfax County Police Department Wildlife Biologist Victo-ria Monroe urges motorists, as well as pedestrians and bicy-clists, to use caution and to be vigilant in their search for deer. "Where you see one deer, there are bound to be many more, as they typically travel in herds," Monroe said. "Watch for eye shine along the roadsides; immediately slow if you spot a deer. If a deer is frozen in place on the road, reduce speed and flash your headlights."

For further information on how to handle deer encounters, smart driving and deer behavior, check www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police.

Regardless of whether you were able to receive either or both seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccinations, a little common sense will go a long way to help reduce the likelihood that you will contract the flu. With the exception of the vaccina-tion tip, these guidelines will also minimize the chance of coming down with the common cold. • Get vaccinated for both the seasonal flu and the H1N1

virus, unless doing so is contraindicated. • Cover nose & mouth with a tissue when you cough or

sneeze and throw it into the trash after use; cough or sneeze into the bend of your elbow and directed away from others.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing/sneezing; use alcohol-based hand sani-tizers if water and soap are not available.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way. Wash hands before eating.

• Avoid close contact with sick people. • If you are sick with flu-like symptoms, stay home for at

least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine) except to get medical care or other necessities. Do not send your sick child to school; do not go to work if you are ill. Keep away from others to prevent spreading the virus.

• Take flu antiviral drugs if recommended—only avail-able by prescription from your doctor. Best if started within the first two days of symptoms.

• Wipe down surfaces that are frequently touched by others with disinfecting clean-ers or wipes—doorknobs, cabinet handles, refrigerator handles, light switches, bath-room fixtures, microwave and other appli-ance keypads or knobs, etc.

• Don’t forget to eat well, get plenty of rest, and dress appropriately for the weather this season! Stay healthy!
