January 2011
When we were decorating the sanctuary recently for Christmas, there was a sense of muted panic: “Where is the Baby Jesus that belongs in the manger?” Apparently, the infant Christ figure that has been part of our church’s manger scene for many, many years, has gone missing. How can we display the scene if Jesus isn’t in it?
The manger scene in question has been on display in the narthex, between the front doors - how many have noticed that Jesus is missing? (The lovely display we have used this season in the front of the chancel came to us from the Garland church.)
How can Jesus be missing from the manger at Christmas? Sadly, it may seem that Jesus is often missing from our Christmas celebrations! We hear people wishing “Happy Holidays” and “Seasons Greetings” more often than “Merry Christmas”. It is so easy for us to be caught up in all of our busy-ness this season that we sometimes miss the whole “Reason for the season”.
While we may lament that our Christmas focus is not always on celebrating the birth of our Lord, we might ask ourselves if Jesus is missing from being front and center - not only in this season, but in our lives? It is a challenge to live as though Christ is the most important thing that ever happened to us!
Seeing the empty manger in our nativity set might make us ask “Where is Jesus?” Is Christmas just to remember when Mary had her baby some 2,000 years ago? Or might it be a time to recall how much God loved us, to send God’s only son to us? Maybe it is a time to ask ourselves if Christ has been born IN US?
It’s one thing if a small figurine of Jesus is missing from our nativity set. It is another matter if he is missing in our lives!
We are soon to be upon a new Calendar Year, when we often resolve to live better (i.e., “this year I’m going to lose 10 pounds… am going to watch less TV … am going to be nicer to the dog … etc.) The greatest resolution we could make would be to ask ourselves EACH and EVERY day … “Am I living as though Jesus Christ is the most important thing that happened to me?”

Early in January, we will be packing away our Christmas decorations at church. Some of us may be haunted by the missing Jesus - - how could we have lost him when we packed up last year? But it is more important to ask ourselves if he has been mis-placed in our lives.
Jesus may be missing from our nativity set. But is he missing from our lives? Let us resolve to seek him in our lives - - in a new and renewing way. Let us wake up each morning and ponder: “Where will I find Jesus today?” And when we lay our heads down at night, may we ask ourselves: “Did others see Christ in me today?” May we live that others will find him IN us and THROUGH us - - not just IN SPITE of us!
Wishing you a Merry Christmas, and Joy-filled New Year!
Blessings,Rev. Kit
