College AcceptancesCongratulations to the class of 2010. As college acceptances continue to roll in, it is clear that seven years of hard work has paid off for this remarkable group of students. Below is a partial list of colleges that accepted Breakthrough students:

Arcadia CollegeBoston UniversityColby-Sawyer CollegeColgate UniversityConnecticut CollegeDrew UniversityHamilton CollegeHarding UniversityHesser CollegeKansas State UniversityKeene State CollegeMass. College of PharmacyMount Holyoke CollegeNortheastern UniversityNorwich UniversityPlymouth State UniversitySaint Anselm CollegeSavannah College of ArtSimmons CollegeSmith CollegeSt. Lawrence UniversitySuffolk UniversityUniversity of Colorado-BoulderUniversity of New HampshireUniversity of RochesterWellesley CollegeWest Virginia University

The Class of 2010When Julian applied to Breakthrough in 2003 as a fifth grader from Bakers-ville Elementary School, his teacher described him as one of the most moti-vated students she knew. Since then, Julian has proven to many others that he has great determination and drive for success.

Julian heard messages about college as a middle schooler, but he reflects that they suddenly be-came very real for him in ninth grade. He explains, “Once I entered high school I saw the older stu-dents making college choices. I realized right away that if I wanted to achieve my goals I would have to start right away.”

Like many high school students, Julian recognized the connection between his academic work and how he spent his time out of class. “Sports taught me to stay focused and become very responsible. Achieving on the field or court became as impor-tant to me as achieving in the classroom. I’ve grown into a leader and a better person thanks to sports.”

Julian stayed in touch with Breakthrough during junior and senior year, especially as he got further into the application process. “It seemed like I had a million things to do and I had no idea where to start.” Using his resources, he worked his way through the process. This fall, he will attend West Virginia University and accomplish a goal he be-lieved in as a ten year old.

Brooke Neveux’s dream is to become an architect one day. And not just any architect; the world’s best architect. How will she make this dream a reality? “With lots of hard work and confidence.” Brooke embarks on her seven-year path to college this summer at Breakthrough where she will take classes that launch her toward rigor-ous classes in middle school and high school. Like many Breakthrough students, Brooke has been aca-demically successful and looks to her experience at Breakthrough to challenge her even more. Brooke will bring much to the community this summer; she likes to read and draw in her spare time, and she describes herself as, “Smart, helpful, a multitasker, and very organized.” Brooke follows her older brother, Jean, a Breakthrough seventh grader, but she is eager to make the experience her own!

Under the guidance of veteran Mentor Teacher, Reina Reidy, school year teachers cre-ated and led skill-based workshops on topics such as theatre, the

Civil War, and Shakespeare. Above: Tucker Westbrook [sy ‘09-10] helps Mi-kaela Ahererra [s ‘16]measure the angle of a straw rocket. Below Detective Lt. Nick Willard from the

Manchester Police Department demonstrates how a polygraph machine works during a forensic science workshop for Breakthrough students.

Breakthrough Collaborative NewsBreakthrough Collaborative received the prestigious Excellence in Education Award from Senator Bar-bara Boxer in recognition of its efforts to ensure a successful path to college for underserved middle school students through an innovative academic enrichment program taught by talented college and high school students.

Below: Trevor Munhall and Bernadette Robinson spent time with Lois Loofbourrow at the Break-through National Conference in November. Lois co-found-ed the first Breakthrough program in San Francisco in 1978.

College VisitsAbove: As part of the eighth grade Super Saturday program, students traveled to Boston University where BU student Paul Renolis [s ‘08, sy ‘03-04, t ‘04-05, ‘07-08] led them on a tour of the campus. Right: Eleventh graders Nick Oberlies, Lena Opgah, Daisy Jac-quez, Rodney Martinez, and Pray Lekien spent a day touring Colby-Sawyer College and meeting with Jay Hauser at NHHEAF over their April vacation. College visits and other high school programs are generously sponsored by The Clowes Fund.

Community PartnershipsBreakthrough Manchester received the President’s Commu-nity Partner Award at the Campus Compact for New Hampshire Presidents’ Awards Luncheon. The award was given to Breakthrough for “Enhanc[ing] the quality of life in the community in meaningful and measurable ways and engaging in the develop-ment of sustained, reciprocal partnerships with a college or university.” The award was a result of the leadership seminar Breakthrough eighth graders participated in with Manchester Community College students. Top right: Aseeb Niazi [s ‘11], Tina White,

Derryfield Families Moved by Reflections on BreakthroughAt this year’s traditional Breakthrough segment during Derryfield’s Parent/Faculty Association Auction, José Maldonado [s ‘03, sy ‘00-03, t ‘01-03, ‘06, ‘09], also a Derryfield alum, reflected upon how the program shaped his path through Derryfield, college, and now law school. He also introduced a short video, produced by Brendan Gillett [t ‘08-10], highlighting the student speakers from the three previous years, Renata Ahishakiye [s ‘13], M.J. Ortega [s ‘15] and Cesar Zamudio [s ‘15]. The three of them spoke about the growth they have made as Breakthrough students and how their participation has helped them shape their future goals. As they prove year after year, Derryfield families remain generous and enthusiastic supporters of Breakthrough. This year’s auction raised $24,800, enough to fund 16 Breakthrough students for a full year.
