Iowa Agricultural Bio Fibers insouthwest Iowa is testing thedepths of potential in corn stoverand other plant-based productsfor innovative uses in many appli-cations and products.

The virtually one of a kind com-pany is the result of a partnershipbetween Iowa native JohnSchechinger, who has more than adecade of experience in corn-stover conversion, processing, andexperimentation, and Dr. DonCordes, retired educator and ener-gy researcher originally fromNebraska.

With the capacity to customizepelleted products to a variety ofneeds, Iowa Agricultural BioFibers (IABF) current outputincludes a balanced animal feedthat incorporates roughage and

protein-rich DDGS, the by-prod-uct of ethanol production.

While developing the feed linescurrently in production, IABFtried feeding corn stover pelletswith cracked corn to a pen ofcalves, Schechinger explained.

The results were so positiveand so much better than feedingground corn stover with crackedcorn that we launched an entirelynew round of testing(including)the roughage from corn stover andthe protein and energy from dis-tillers grains, wheat middlingsand oat screenings in the samepellet, he said.

Informal research conducted byIABF is in the process of being sci-entifically verified at SouthDakota State University,Schechinger added.

  • Every year, my hus-band decides that hesthe absolutely lastfarmer in westernIowa who is still plant-ing, no matter howmuch I try to assurehim that hes not.

Now that the cropsare in and that partic-ular hurdle has beenovercome, we can focuson the more importantsummer activities, like4-H projects andcamps.

My boys were sched-uled to go to the state4-H camp together (forseparate camps) inearly June, but muchto the little ones dis-may, no one else hadsigned up for the camphe wanted to attend.Luckily, we couldchange them to a camplater in the summer, but that still didntstop the almost- tearswhen I told him thathe would have to wait.

Do I have any othercamps in June? heasked through thetears.

Does he have camps? When I was young, Ishould have been solucky. I had one 4-Hcamp for 3 days eachyear, and that wasabout it besides sportsand riding the beanbuggy?

Remember that, you40-somethings? I won-der who first thoughtup the idea of stickingfour seats on a barand strapping it to thefront of a tractor. Butthat wasnt the bestpart, which was beingfitted with a sprayerthat could shoot chemi-cals 50 feet (good forwater fights).

Those were the daysbefore Roundup Readybeans, when a wronglyaimed wand could takeout a couple beanplants, or a drippingone could take outevery 12th row in thefield.

    Good times!Unfortunately walk-

ing beans and the beanbuggy/ bar seem to be athing of the past. Too

bad, because it was afun summer job. Forjust two or three weeksworth of work, we couldearn a few hundred dol-lars, almost enough tocarry us through theentire school year if webudgeted right.

Back to the camps, Iinformed the little onethat yes, he did haveplenty of other campexperiences this sum-mer, including a coupleCub Scout day campswith me, a Cub Scoutovernight camp withdad, grandma camp(what we call the timehe spends at grandmaand grandpas houseduring the summer),and a 4-H Clover Kidsday camp. He alsowanted to do thelibrarys summer read-ing program, so I haveto sign him up for that!Oh, and lets not forgetswimming lessons.

The big kid doesnthave as many camps, but just a week-longScout camp right beforethe fair, which means

we have to get his proj-ects done ahead of time.

In fact, he gets backfrom camp the morningof conferrence judgingfor the non-livestockprojects. I hope theydont take smell intoaccount (or maybe hecan shower at grand-mas house in town

before judging). Hell also have to

start in earnest walk-ing his 4-H calvesaround the farm nowthat school is out.

The big one hasgrandma camp, as well, but will probably spendthe time working on hisbig 4-H project upthere, refurbishing atable and two chairs ofmy sisters family sothey can continue usingthem. On Mothers Day,they took all the woodoff, in preparation forsanding and painting.

Then, they have tocut and finish the newwood that will go onthem. Its going to be abig job, but totallyworth it for the big kid.

The schedule for Juneand July is already full, and Im looking fowardto August when schoolstarts and we can relaxagain!

Hey, a person candream, cant she?
