Slide 3
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Over the past century increasing
distance between consumers and their products, little knowledge of
the conditions where their products came from Context for
conventional trade
Slide 4
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Disconnections in conventional
trade Complexity and scale of international sales trade expanded.
This is presented as the modern miracle yet The consequences of our
actions become indistinct and impossible to measure: in large
private companies top managers dont even meet major suppliers,
thats people who are supplying them with hundreds of millions of
pounds of raw material. They work at the strategic level high in
the clouds.
Slide 5
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ The growth of the social economy
From the early 20 th century the social economy has formed At
European level, the SE represents 10 percent of all businesses: 2
million businesses and more than 20 million workers Aimed at
improving collective working conditions and individual lives:
Social objectives over profit Open membership Democracy Combination
of interests Solidarity and responsibility Independence from public
authorities Sustainable development objectives
Slide 6
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Fair trade in Europe Within the
third sector (SE) a number of important movements exist. Beginning
in 1946, Fair Trade (or alternative trade) fair trade focuses more
upon matching the market and ethics: Market access for marginalised
producers Sustainable and equitable trading relationships Capacity
building and empowerment Consumer awareness raising and
advocacy
Slide 7
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ The shape of fair trade in Europe
Defining Fairtrade beyond certification is difficult Key issues
facing fair trade: Integrity and values: some based on principles
These principles are spring boards: weve set up strong principles
for relationships with the developing world, and these underpin
relationships between staff too. BAFTS Fairtrade or fair trade?
Other companies interpret fair trade as simply about paying a
premium: Fair trade used to be about democratisation, now its about
paying slightly more to farmers. Its less ideological these days.

English language module for managers within FTOs Objectives are to:
Understand key concepts and debates about leading change and why
they matter in a FTO setting Identify the qualities needed to lead
change and how to develop them in self and others To demonstrate
knowing when to offer different types of leadership for change
Slide 20
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Key concepts and debates Styles
of leadership: From the front: greater control, more processes and
rules. More efficient with consistent quality From behind: less
control, empower employees to set personal boundaries. Less
efficient, diffused authority and responsibility How groups work
together: Systems thinking: groups form over common interests and
purposes which are often implicit How leaders affect systems:
authority will affect the organisation in unpredictable ways
Slide 21
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Qualities needed to lead change
Leaders need to match the companys situation/needs with the changes
they want to make Vision of the future: what is the strategy behind
your actions? Why are you doing what you are doing? Understand the
motivations of yourself and of others in your organisation dont
replicate yourself!
Slide 22
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Organisational lifecycles
Recognise where your organisation is in its lifecycle and what it
means for leadership: Start-up: requires commitment, energy,
oversight Growth: changing the organisational culture, insert
policies and procedures Plateau: understand how to stay in touch
with what is happening across the organisation, create reporting
systems
Slide 23
https://fairsharetraining.eu/ Hoped for outcomes Clearer
directions for FTOs Maintained and strengthened FTO values within a
turbulent environment Leaders more confident and able to manage
staff skilfully FTOs can close the gap between consumers and
producers
