Creating Beautiful Music Togetherby Barbara Wischmeier

In saying goodbye, I learned a long time ago to say thankyou! It is expected in life that most relationships will eventually end. Whether it's through a change in career, the break off of a relationship, an impending move or even death, farewells are as much a part of life as hellos. Sunday, June 17th is my last day at St. Michael's and I cannot leave without bidding you all farewell.I treasure the relationships developed here. From our first service together in October of 2010, to invitations into your homes to share a meal, trips taken together, significant conversations during happy and sad times, as well as other shared experiences of our common existence. If not for your constant support andencouragement I would not have been able to perform myduties so well. I thank you for your open and welcoming arms. As with any special place, it is the people who make it and it will be those I will miss the most.

As I prepare for this new phase of my life in Texas, mythoughts are bittersweet because I am losing an important part of my life here in this community. I want to make certain you know how much I appreciate the opportunity of laughing and crying, singing and creating beautiful music together has meant. I knew this day of goodbyes would come, and I wish each of you warm affection and thanksgiving for our nineteen months together. It has been my privilege to develop a special bond with this exceptional community, and I shall take away with me cherished memories of our times together. I leave this place with great confidence in the leadership and you as a

+Jerry Wennstrom, this Sunday, 6:30-9:00 pm. Some of youmay have already considered that my invitation to artist and author Jerry Wennstrom is quite a bit off the normal path of our adult education and formation offerings at St. Michael's. Jerry is in fact a personal acquaintance whose story and ideas have been an inspiration to me in the contexts of my own faith and creativity. Jerry doesn't describe himself as a Christian, but his message and questions may be of value to anyone exploring the intersections of spirituality and creativity. Because I don't feel it's appropriate to use parish funds to pay Jerry's modest stipend, I'm asking those who take part for a $10 donation; and I do hope you'll consider joining us Sunday evening.

needs are rice,canned meats, juice, chili, cereal, jelly,

crackers andsnacks. Please

remember monetary donations to the Food

Pantry Fund are welcome to

supplement specialitems. There is

a cannister attached to the wagon for your

convenience.

+Barbara Wischmeier's last Sunday with us will be the coming one, June 17. I believe this Sword will include other information from or about Barbara, and I mainly want to encourage you to join us on Sunday if you'll be in town. We'll enjoy a festive reception after the 9:30 a.m. Eucharist, and there will be a table set up in the Community Room where those who've attended either service can write a personal thank you note to Barbara for her ministry and music at St. Michael's since fall 2010.

+Summer Music and the Organist Search. We've alreadyenjoyed some special musical offerings this summer, andDavid Baker has been coordinating people and schedules to keep the music robust over the summer and after Barbara's departure. Edie Davis will be providing an all-piano music programme on one upcoming Sunday, and a fine organist named Jonathan Oblander has agreed to be with us for several upcoming Sundays. (Jonathan is one of the technicians who seasonally tune our organ, and he was very well received when he supplied for us once last summer.) Meanwhile, the organist search committee, about which I wrote more last week, has made some promising headway, and at this point it seems reasonable to expect that we may have a new organist in place by Labor Day.

membership? How might these relationships allow us to experience

+On the 7th of June the LIFT Youth made a trip to Great America with our Youth Minister, Kara Joy Baker. LIFT is comprised of the Junior High youth in the parish.

A reception will be held after the 9:30 a.m. service on the 17th of June in honor and in appreciation of Barbara Wischmeier as she departs for her new position in Texas. St. Michael's Book Club Plans a "Skype Chat" with Book Author June 17thTwo copies of The Charming Quirks of Others by Alexander McCall Smith have been placed in the Church Office by the St. Michael's Book Club for any readers who might by like to read the book and join them for a Skype author chat with Mr. Smith

on Sunday, June 17th, 5:00 p.m. Please arrive at the church library earlier than 5:00, as that is when the actual chat will begin.

Alexander McCall Smith is also the author of the popular The No. 1Ladies Detective Agency series, and several other lighthearted mystery novels. On behalf of our Book Group, Kathi Frelk entered a contest and won this opportunity, which included copies of the book, a camera, and some Scottish treats. The author lives inScotland, which is why the chat has been scheduled at an "odd" time instead of at one of the regular meeting times.

Also, Frank Compton will lead the discussion of our June selection, the classic "Ethan Frome." Florence Compton will be the meeting host. the date is Wednesday, June 27 (Please note corrected

date!), 7:30 pm, in the church library.

that in the KitchenAid! Thank you for your generosity. As we all move into the next stage of our music making, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers and be thought of fondly as I bake.


Contemplative Prayer

Service at Church of the Holy ApostlesChurch of the Holy Apostles (26238 N HWY 59, Wauconda 60084) conducts a contemplative

prayer service in the style of Taizé on the 5th Friday of each month in which there are 5 Fridays. These services alternate readings and simple sung chants with periods of silence. The next "Service of Silence and Light" will be Friday 29 June at 7:00 p.m., and all aremost warmly welcome.

Announcements+From the Rector, "Relationships start with nametags!" Please make an effort to wear nametags this summer! This is especially important as we move from three services to two services and may not recognize all of those with whom weworship.

+Keep those cardboard tubes from empty toilet paper rolls coming for Vacation Bible School; we need about 60, and we will make our goal if the contributions continue to ROLL in ! Please collect and bring these to the Church Office before June 25th! Thank you! Thank you!

+Additional Vacation Bible School assistance needed! We are inneed of an Adult "Shepherd" on Wednesday, June 27, 9:15 to noon. A Shepherd is a group leader for ten 4-5 year olds and guides them from activity center to activity center. The Shepherd would have 2 junior high-aged aides to assist in this endeavor who will have



experienced Monday and Tuesday already. There is no preparation required!

+ SAVE THE DATE!! Worship Ministries Gathering, Wednesday, June 27 For: Leaders/Coordinators of Worship Ministries and Leaders/Coordinators of Ministries Related to Worship5:30 p.m. Eucharist6:00 p.m. Dinner in the Community Room6:30 - 8:00 p.m. Program/Reflection/Feedbacka) a brief presentation by the Rector; b) and opportunity forobservations, reflections and feedback; and then c) a separation into smaller ministry groups (e.g. ushers, acolytes, lectors) to specifically identify opportunities to look at concerns or opportunities over the summer so that we'll feel energized and focused for the year ahead. Please note that some of the time will be devoted to the big questions of the Sunday schedule and the 9:00 a.m. Eucharist, but the main focus will be on some of the smaller questions and details -think of it as a worship ministries pit stop!
