“Any roadblocks alongthe way, I want to be awareof and try to avoid them.”

Part of what makes go-ing to college intimidatingis “the process,” said Glass-coe, LCC’s director of K-12initiatives and career prepa-ration, the process of fillingout financial aid forms, get-ting registered on time, allthe bureaucratic rigmarolerequired just to get throughthe door.

That’s why the people in-volved in HOPE use whatGlasscoe called an “inten-sive, high-touch strategy,”keeping tabs on students, helping to connect themwith support services, tryingto make sure they apply forall the grant and scholarshipmoney available to them.

The last of those is per-haps more urgent now thatmany who have supportedthe program have shiftedtheir attention to the LansingSchool District’s PromiseZone, which would extendLCC scholarship offers morebroadly.

Former Lansing PoliceChief Mark Alley, who con-ceived the HOPE programin 2000, and others “cannotcontinue to fund-raise,”Glasscoe said, “because nowthey’re fundraising for Lan-sing Promise.”

But for the youngest stu-dents - participants are iden-tified in sixth grade - payingfor college was still a waysoff. They were there just tosee what college was aboutand to start imagining them-selves as college students.

“I think it’s having a posi-tive effect,” said Lee Leath-erberry, as he accompaniedhis son, Banashe Aahari,on a campus tour. “It giveshim hope. Even if it doesn’twork out, it still makes himstrive.”

Banashe, who is goinginto seventh grade at Patten-gill Middle School, summedup his feelings on the daywith a single word.

“Cool.”

the music stays new and alive and interesting.”Michael Sailors, the composer and arranger who con-

ducts and rehearses the Sailors/Delancey Jazz Orchestra, agreed that musicians are keeping jazz fresh, and part ofthat is in the way they perform on stage.

“I think more than ever today it is in the musicians’hands to make it entertaining,” Sailors said. “When I haveshows here in Lansing I make it entertaining, and peoplecome out and say that was very different from the usualjazz experience they have.”

The jazz scene in Lansing may seem small now, Sailorssaid, but it also seems to be improving in quality.

“Musicians are getting better,” he said. “Michigan Stateturns out students every year who can really play their in-struments and they know the history of jazz; they know thehistory of their instruments, so there are people in townwho really understand how jazz should be played.”

Sailors said he is moving out of state, so this was hislast show in Michigan, he said. He composed a three-move-ment suite dedicated to Michigan.

JazzFest isn’t the only place to catch the genre in theLansing area, however. The Neil Gordon Trio and otherjazz bands can also be found playing at local venues likeMoriarty’s Pub in Lansing and Mumbai in East Lansing onThursday nights, Gordon said.

LANSING — Potter Park Zoo, the oldestaccredited zoo in Michigan, is now one ofonly 19 international locations to be accred-ited with a postdoctoral residency programby the American College of Zoological Medi-cine.

Filling that position for the 2010-2013 cy-cle will be Justin R. Schlanser, D.V.M., thefirst resident in the new animal care pro-gram. “This is a significant achievement forPotter Park Zoo,” Zoo Veterinarian and An-imal Curator Dr. Tara Harrison said. “Notonly is this program the first of its kind inMichigan, but the accreditation puts us in aselect group of facilities worldwide recog-nized for top-notch post doctoral training inzoological medicine.”

The three-year residency incorporatesPotter Park Zoo, Toledo Zoo, Michigan De-partment of Natural Resources, MichiganState University’s College of Veterinary Med-icine and Diagnostic Center for Populationand Animal Health. The program connectsthe institutions in a way that allows postdoctoral veterinary students the opportunityto gain exceptional clinical training in a vari-ety of settings. Dr. Schlanser will be placedon a rotation between the five organizations, during which time he will learn the generalaspects of zoological medicine such as an-

imal husbandry, nutrition, preventive medi-cine, pathology, and surgery with animals ina both a captive and free-ranging environ-ment. The program is designed to furthertrain veterinarians who have already earneddoctoral degrees but are interested in spe-cializing in the area of zoological medicine.

“Dr. Schlanser is an excellent choice forthe first Potter Park Zoo resident in zoologi-cal medicine,” said Harrison.

A 2003 graduate of Michigan State Uni-versity College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr.Schlanser began his veterinary career inthe Veterinary Corps Division of the UnitedStates Army. He attained the rank of Majorand has served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Heearned the Meritorious Service Medal andwas selected to be the first veterinarian toserve as an elite U.S. Army Ranger with the75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga.

A native of Northville, Dr. Schlanser andhis family recently relocated to InghamCounty from Georgia. Potter Park Zoo is lo-cated at 1301 S.
