Hymn: TiS 398

1. Come down, O Love divine,

seek now this soul of mine,

and visit it with your own ardour glowing;

O Comforter, draw near,

within my heart appear

and kindle it, your holy flame bestowing.

2. There let it freely burn,

till earthly passions turn

to dust and ashes, in its heat consuming;

and let your glorious light

shine ever on my sight

and clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

3. Let holy charity

my outer garment be,

and lowliness become my inner clothing:

true lowliness of heart,

which takes the humbler part

and for its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

4. And so the yearning strong

with which the soul will long

shall far outpass the power of human telling;

for none can guess its grace

till we become the place

in which the Holy Spirit makes his dwelling.

Bianco da Siena d.1434; tr. Richard Frederick Littledale 1833–90 alt.

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit who

has been given to us. Romans 5.5

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord

your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (Kew Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

O God, who taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the

light of your Holy Spirit: grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgement

in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through the merits

of Christ Jesus our Saviour, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the

same Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Genesis 11.1-9

1 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words.

2 And as they

migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and

settled there. 3 And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks, and

burn them thoroughly.’ And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for

mortar. 4 Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower

with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise

we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.’ 5 The

Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had

built. 6 And the Lord said, ‘Look, they are one people, and they have all one

language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that

they propose to do will now be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down,

and confuse their language there, so that they will not understand one

another’s speech.’ 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the

face of all the earth, and they left off building the city. 9 Therefore it was

called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth;

and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the

earth.

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 104.26-33

26

Lord, how various are your works:

in wisdom you have made them all, and the earth is full of your

creatures. 27

There is the wide, immeasurable sea:

there move living things without number, great and small; 28

There go the ships, to and fro:

and there is that Leviathan whom you formed to sport in the deep. 29

These all look to you:

to give them their food in due season. 30

When you give it to them, they gather it:

when you open your hand they are satisfied with good things. 31

When you hide your face, they are troubled:

when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 32

When you send forth your spirit they are created:

and you renew the face of the earth. 33

May the glory of the Lord endure for ever:

may the Lord rejoice in his works.

Second Reading: Acts 2.1-21 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one

place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a

violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided

tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of

them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in

other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.5 Now there were devout

Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound

the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them

speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they

asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we

hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites,

and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and

Asia, 10

Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to

Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11

Cretans and

Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of

power.’ 12

All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What

does this mean?’ 13

But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new

Page 8: HTK Pew Sheet, 10am, May 19, 2013

8

wine.’ 14

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed

them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you,

and listen to what I say. 15

Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it

is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16

No, this is what was spoken through

the prophet Joel: 17

“In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour

out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall

prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall

dream dreams.18

Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I

will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19

And I will show portents in

the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky

mist. 20

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before

the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21

Then everyone who calls

on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 413

1. Holy Spirit, come confirm us

in the truth that Christ makes known;

we have faith and understanding

through your helping gifts alone.

2. Holy Spirit, come console us,

come as advocate to plead,

loving Spirit from the Father,

grant in Christ the help we need.

3. Holy Spirit, come renew us,

come yourself to make us live:

holy, through your loving presence,

holy, through the gifts you give.

4. Holy Spirit, come possess us,

you the love of Three in One,

Holy Spirit of the Father,

Holy Spirit of the Son. William Brian Foley 1919–

9

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we

greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint John chapter 14

beginning at the 12th

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

12

Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that

I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the

Father. 13

I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be

glorified in the Son. 14

If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. 15

‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16

And I will ask the

Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever. 17

This

is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees

him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will

be in you. 18

‘I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19

In a little while the

world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will

live. 20

On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I

in you. 21

They who have my commandments and keep them are those who

love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love

them and reveal myself to them.’ 22

Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord,

how is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?’ 23

Jesus

answered him, ‘Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will

love them, and we will come to them and make our home with

them. 24

Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word

that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me. 25

‘I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26

But the

Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach

you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.27

Peace I leave

with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do

not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God,

the Father, the almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary

and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge

the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son

is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ.

His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

And also with you.

[A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around us]

Offertory Hymn: TiS 422

1. Come, Holy Spirit, come!

inflame our souls with love,

transforming every heart and home

with wisdom from above.

O let us not despise

the humble path Christ trod,

but choose, to shame the worldly-

wise,

the foolishness of God.

2. All-knowing Spirit, prove

the poverty of pride,

by knowledge of the Father’s love

in Jesus crucified.

And grant us faith to know

the glory of that sign,

and in our very lives to show

the marks of love divine.

3. Come with the gift to heal

the wounds of guilt and fear,

and to oppression’s face reveal

the kingdom drawing near.

Where chaos longs to reign,

descend, O holy dove,

and free us all to work again

the miracles of love.

4. Spirit of truth, arise;

inspire the prophet’s voice:

expose to scorn the tyrant’s lies,

and bid the poor rejoice.

O Spirit, clear our sight,

all prejudice remove,

and help us to discern the right,

and covet only love.

5. Give us the tongues to speak,

in every time and place,

to rich and poor, to strong and

weak,

the word of love and grace.

Enable us to hear

the words that others bring,

interpreting with open ear

the special song they sing.

6. Come, Holy Spirit, dance

within our hearts today,

our earth-bound spirits to entrance,

our mortal fears allay;

and teach us to desire

all other things above,

that self-consuming holy fire,

the perfect gift of love.

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Final Hymn: TiS 187

1. Let all creation dance

in energies sublime,

as order turns with chance,

unfolding space and time,

for nature’s art

in glory grows,

and newly shows

God’s mind and heart.

2. God’s breath each force unfurls,

igniting from a spark

expanding starry swirls,

with whirlpools dense and dark.

Though moon and sun

seem mindless things,

each orbit sings:

‘Your will be done.’

3. Our own amazing earth,

with sunlight, cloud and storms

and life’s abundant growth

in lovely shapes and forms,

is made for praise,

a fragile whole,

and from its soul

heaven’s music plays.

4. Lift heart and soul and voice:

in Christ all praises meet

and nature shall rejoice

as all is made complete.

In hope be strong,

all life befriend

and kindly tend

creation’s song.
