T housands of taxpayers in Hawaiÿi demonstrated their support of public libraries in 2005 by donating a total of $92,200 to the Hawaiÿi State Public Library System. This was made possible when they donated a portion of their 2004 tax refunds to the Hawaiÿi State Public Library System Special Fund. The state Dept. of Taxation collected and tabulated the funds, and presented it to the state library system. You, too, can show your support this tax season by contributing to the Hawaiÿi State Public Library System’s Special Fund. Act 193 (HB 638) provides a check-off box on State individual income tax returns which allows taxpayers an opportunity to support the Hawaiÿi State Public Library System. Their $2 tax refund donations ($4 for a joint return) have made it possible to purchase books and other library materials for all ages to enjoy. Nearly 450 periodical titles are indexed, with over 300 including full-text content. Full- text content dates as far back as 1985. Computer Source indexes both gen- eral and scholarly titles, ranging from PC Magazine, Fast Company and Macworld to Neural Computation and International Journal of Systems Science. Looking for information on the new video iPod from Macworld magazine? Insert “video iPod” in the search box. Mark A uthor and Television Producer Lee Goldberg is scheduled to conduct a Television Scriptwriting Workshop at six Oÿahu public libraries from Feb. 5 – 9. Admission is free. Goldberg, current scriptwriter for the hit USA TV series “Monk,” was the executive producer of “Diagnosis Murder,” the hit CBS TV series that starred Dick Van Dyke. In addition, Goldberg was the scriptwriter for other popular television shows including “Baywatch,” “Missing,” and “Spenser: For Hire.” He has been hon- ored with two Edgar Award nominations from the Mystery Writers of America. An accomplished mystery novelist, Goldberg has written books based on the “Diagnosis Murder” and “Monk” series, including the upcoming “Mr. Monk Goes to Hawaii” (July 2006). New Martial Arts Collection to Open at Salt Lake-Moanalua Library

Calling all martial artists! On Friday, Feb. 10, the Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library will debut a new special collection of martial arts

books and DVDs. The 300-title DVD collection fea-tures instructional videos from Aikido to Zhaobao Taiji Boxing and most styles in between, including the major karate styles of Goju, Shotokan, Kyokushin, and Wado, as well as the major kung fu styles of Hung Gar, Shaolin, Hsing-I, Taiji (Sun, Chen, Wu, Yang), White Crane and Wing Chun. Current popular forms of jiu jitsu such as Gracie, Small Circle and Brazilian are also featured, along with Kendo, weapons systems and the lesser known styles of Capoeira, Cai Li Fo, Kali and Silat. Tae Kwon Do and other Korean arts are represented, as are the mixed martial

arts, including UFC, ADCC, Superbrawl and Shootboxing. Additionally, the col-lection contains classic Chinese kung fu and Japanese samurai cinema with titles featuring Bruce Lee, Toshiro Mifune, the Zatoichi series and films directed by Akira Kurosawa. A comprehensive martial arts book collection of 330 titles complements this special DVD collection. Library custom-ers are welcome to borrow these books or DVDs ($1 fee for each DVD borrowed with a 7-day loan period). Update: ADA Renovations • Keaÿau Public & School Library

(Big Island) – reopened 1/23/06 with full library services restored. Closed since 10/10/05 for a major air-con-ditioning and duct work system replacement project.

• Mänoa Public Library – reopened 1/30/06 after being closed since December 2005 for construction of a wheelchair-accessible ramp, wheelchair-accessible parking, and installation of a fire alarm system. Temporary limited parking in park-ing lot while painters added parking stripes to new handicapped-acces-sible stall. In addition, front entrance closed temporarily while repairs to the stairs are completed.

Mililani Public Library received a donation for its Children’s Reading Room of decorated stools with book themes last month from the Mililani Cub Scout Pack 179. • Hawaiÿi Kai Public Library – book drop and customer parking lot are now open after being closed 12/22/05 – 1/1/06 for paving of handicapped-accessible parking stall.
