The Helicopter Strike Missile (HSM) is a true state-of-the-art long range anti-ship cruise missile, which combines precision inertial guidance with a high-resolution dual band imaging infrared (IR) seeker with unique search geometry. The missile does not require any in-flight guidance from the launching platform and the seeker will autonomously locate, verify and home on target. A complete 360º firing arc allows the helicopter to prosecute/engage targets on any bearing relative to the helicopter’s heading without having to change its course. This missile has been in development since 2001 and is ready for helicopter and maritime patrol aircraft integration. Main Features State-of-the-art, all digital, fifth generation fire-and-forget anti-ship strike missile Numerous selectable flight profiles and horizontal trajectories Stand-off range from outside opponent’s area air defense systems Accurate passive midcourse guidance Passive state-of-the-art infrared seeker Autonomous target validation, tracking and homing Unaffected by jamming and IR decoys Random high-g maneuvers in terminal phase Impact point close to waterline for maximum destructing effect in target MISSILE CHARACTERISTICS Designation: Helicopter Strike Missile Overall length: 156 in / 3960 mm Airframe diameter: 16 in / 406 mm Wing span: Folded: 27.5 in / 698 mm Deployed: 53.5 in /1360 mm Launch weight: 880 lb / 400 kg Warhead weight: 264 lb /120 kg (Equivalent high explosive weight 220 lb / 100 kg) Guidance: GPS assisted INS Programmable Flight Path Passive IR homing Cruise speed: High subsonic Operational range: 130 km + Helicopter Strike Missile (HSM) - Attack without Warning

Background

Infrared guided fire and forget missiles are key assets in the inventory of the Norwegian Defence Forces. The Royal Norwegian Navy, the Defense Research Establishment (FFI) and KONGSBERG have each made their contributions in the development of these IR missiles. The Penguin missile is the market leader for the naval helicopter application. The modernization of the Royal Norwe-gian Navy resulted in a requirement for a longer range missile deployable in a global setting and designed to counter the threats of 2017 and beyond. This lead to the development of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) which from the outset was designed for ships, helicopters, and truck launches. The Helicopter Strike Missile (HSM) is a spin-off from the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) development with the same seeker, electronics, warhead, motor and booster.
