The University of St.Gallen (HSG) Hub São Paulo The Latin America Hub of the University of St.Gallen was established in July 2010 and aims at strengthening cooperation in research in the region by running an on-site office based in São Paulo with a long-term perspective.

The HSG Hub São Paulo focuses on three main research areas

inclusive business and impact investing, family business management, and leadership and intercultural management.

Remaining in the area of research, the HSG Hub São Paulo has developed and is currently incubating the Impact Investing Knowledge Platform (IILA); this involves a network of universities, foundations and institutes, which jointly develop projects in the area of impact investing and social finance.

Another key program is the HSG CooperativeLab, a match-making platform used by HSG students, SMEs and start-ups in Latin America. The main objective of this initiative is to promote and develop entrepreneurial practices beyond the classroom. During projects, students rely on HSG Alumni as mentors to support the bridging process between academia, practice, and different business cultures.

In addition, the HSG Hub São Paulo provides executive education programs in the region as well as tailor-made programs in St.Gallen, public lectures, working groups in strategic cooperation with companies, and business study missions to specific Latin American countries.

Up until now the Hub office has focused its activities in Brazil which is reflected in this report. The plan for 2015 is to expand the set of joint research projects, public lectures, and book launches to other Latin American countries.

The University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo Research PlatformAs one of Europe’s leading business universities, the University of St.Gallen is globally recognised as a source of thought leadership on current economic, business, and societal matters and for the development of talent able to integrate perspectives and engage in responsible entrepreneurship.

In this spirit, the University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo has engaged in interdisciplinary research activities focusing on Impact Investing1.

By following the social finance and Impact Investing momentum in Brazil, and by supporting the development of field research, case studies, conferences on these topics, and surveys conducted with the most important players in the field, the University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo is striving to build up an ecosystem of Impact Investing as the following text describes.

Impact Investing is a topic of growing interest to the financial industry, entrepreneurs and academia. Especially in Brazil, where various players are already active on the market, the Impact Investment model has the potential to address a number of social and environmental challenges.

In order to support this development, the Impact Investing Latin America Knowledge Platform (IILA) was launched in December 2012. The founding members of the platform are the University of St.Gallen through its Hub office based in São Paulo, and Insper (Brazil).

IILA - Impact Investing Latin America Knowledge Platform

1 Impact Investing is as an investment approach that intentionally seeks to create both financial return and positive social or environmental impact which is actively measured (WEF, 2013)

New partners have recently joined the Impact Investing Latin America Platform: the CORS (Centre for Organization Studies) of the School of Business and Economics of the University of São Paulo (USP-FEA) in São Paulo; Instituto Cidadania Empresarial (ICE), the Humanistic Management Centre (Switzerland), the BMW Foundation, the Social Business Club of the University of St.Gallen, and Oikos, a student association for sustainable economics and management.

IILA provides a neutral, non-profit oriented platform for research that goes beyond academic circles and which intends to act as a catalyst for driving Impact Investing from margins to mainstream. It strives to build up an ecosystem that generates, transmits and disseminates academic knowledge in different areas, which are of central importance to Impact Investing.

Apart from the focus on cooperation, its multidisciplinary nature and applied cross-culture teamwork, IILAs most outstanding characteristic is its proximity to the big players of the Impact Investing market. The idea is that scalable business interests interact with academic approaches.

The partners engage in the following activities:

Generating Knowledge

Research Projects

The following projects and research topics are either in development or have already been concluded since December 2012, when the Impact Investing platform was launched.

a. Dr.Consulta: Public Value Creation Assessment and its relevance for business decision-making – the case of a healthcare clinic network for the Bottom of the Pyramid population in São Paulo

Dr.Consulta is a healthcare clinic network which was recently included in the Impact Investing Portfolio of LGT-VP. Dr.Consulta consists of five clinics in São Paulo, and is currently working on the extension of the clinic network.

The University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo developed a study that evaluates the public value creation of this innovative healthcare solution. Sounding board of the study was the Centre for Leadership and Values in Society at the HSG.

The finalized study was presented to the founders in November 2014. An additional presentation to Dr.Consulta’s Impact Investing committee elaborated on the importance of the Public Value Creation in relation to the growth of the business and its future strategic positioning.

These projects are managed and conducted by the current Impact Investing Platform Coordinator Johannes Boch.

b. Intra-organizational Knowledge Transfer – the case of NESsT Brazil and NESsT Peru

Founded back in 1997 in Hungary, NESsT was established as an international non-profit organization that develops sustainable social enterprises to solve critical social problems in emerging market economies.

These days, successful management of organizations with a worldwide presence requires knowledge to be transferred from one team, department, or geographical division to another in an effective manner in order to be more productive and increase chances of survival in a competitive and unstable environment. Considering the vital role that knowledge management plays, this research paper will thereby focus on intra-organizational knowledge transfer within all NESsT’s units, with a particular focus on the knowledge transfer between NESsT Brazil and NESsT Peru.

This research paper aims to not only clarify the concept of knowledge transfer, but also to show practical understanding of how knowledge transfer is being managed and optimized in an international organization with a social purpose.

c. The impact of ICT on entrepreneurship and youth engagement – the case of the “Centro de Educação e Inovação Tecnológica” of the project “Pescando com Redes 3G” from the Fundação Telefônica

Marion Sottas during her field research in Bahia

The project “Pescando com Redes 3G” (Fishing with 3G Nets), initiative of the Fundação Telefônica among others, aims to promote sustainable social and economic development through digital and social inclusion in the fishing communities of Santa Cruz Cabrália (Bahia, Brazil). Fishing is one of the main economic activities in the region. Overfishing and lack of investment have resulted in diminishing opportunities, reducing the income of the fishing communities and resulting in the migration of young people to other cities in search of jobs.

The project supports the implementation of new economic activities through the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) such as 3G-connected smartphone and tablet applications. The “Center for Education and Innovation – Fishing with 3G Nets” (CEIT-PR3G), which was inaugurated in March 2013, is as an incubator for localized mobile application where the youth of the region can implement its ideas. By analyzing a number of successful cases, the research is going to investigate how the CEIT-PR3G can awaken the entrepreneurial spirit of the young generation through the use of ICT. Moreover, the thesis is going to examine how these new opportunities can engage young people within local communities and prevent them to migrate to bigger cities.

Simon Locher interviewing families who benefited from water projects in Turmalina (Minas Gerais)

d. Impact assessment of a water project in the semi-arid region of Minas Gerais

The Vale do Jequitinhonha in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, suffers a lack of water due to irregular rainfall and drying out of streams. Furthermore, economically the region is known as one of the poorest in Brazil. In order to foster the development of the valley, the Centro de Agricultura Alternativa Vicente Nica (CAVI) promotes family farming through alternative techniques revitalizing the region. The most popular method are so-called water harvesting ponds. With a relatively low investment, CAVI manages to revitalize dried-out streams and stimulate the agricultural production of the families. The organization counts on contributions of international donors. The Swiss foundation Vivamos Mejor (VM) invests since 2008 in the region’s development.

In order to evaluate the socio-economic impact of the investments made in such water harvesting ponds, Simon Locher defined a series of indicators together with CAVI, VM and the beneficiaries. Mr. Locher conducted over 30 interviews with families in the rural area of the Vale do Jequitinhonha.

e. World Economic Forum Impact Investing Initiative

Apart from hosting the WEF as a speaker at the conference, the HSG Hub also published in September 2014 an article on its Latin America activities using the IILA Knowledge Platform as an example of the intercultural collaboration of business schools in the area of Impact Investing.

f. Mapping of the Brazilian Impact Investing Market

Starting in December 2013 the University of St.Gallen Hub has contributed to a mapping study of the Brazilian Impact Investing Market together with LGT-VP, Quintessa, and ANDE. The report was published in September 2014.

g. Gebana Brazil

Gebana Brazil is a sustainable producer of high-quality organic products derived from organic soy and other grains. Apart from researching new environmentally-friendly agricultural technologies, Gebana also supports regional development and an increase in the living standards through an integrated farming model.

One of Gebana’s objectives for 2014 is to expand the business by acquiring new investors with an interest in sustainable agriculture. To support this process, Gebana has asked the University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo to develop a comprehensive investor report tailored to the requirements of sustainable investors.

h. Working group on “How companies and privately owned foundations and institutes engage in Impact Investing”

At the 2014 Annual Impact Investing Conference, the University of St.Gallen Hub first raised the question on how companies and privately owned foundations and institutes could best develop an inclusive business strategy and further engage in different sorts of Impact Investing models either in the communities where they are active or along their business value chain.

Right after the conference, a working group was formed to look into the possibilities of deriving a roadmap for getting companies and privately owned foundations and institutes involved in Impact Investing. The results will be presented in a conference about this topic.

i. Socio-economic impact of vocational training for women

The project “Mulher em Construção“ provides professional education courses for the construction industry to women in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul). Vocational training does not only generate (a higher) income for a woman but lifts an entire family out of poverty, social welfare as well as the informal sector. The research aims at measuring the socio-economic impact of vocational training and determining the suitability of professional education for Impact Investing. The organization, founded by Bia Kern in 2006, as well as this research project is supported by the Swiss Foundation “Womanity”.

International Executive MBA

The 22 students finished their last compulsory course in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires between November 24th and December 3rd. The classes in Brazil focused on the growing market of the low-income population; the so-called base of the pyramid and emerging middle class. Apart from the lectures on the political, economic and business environment and consumer behavior, the students prepared through the case study of Dr.Consulta (private health care for low-income customers), visits to the retail environment of the market as well as a market research organization that focuses on consumers in favelas for their final exam (developing a service or product for this market segment). In Sorocaba (city in the industrial belt of São Paulo), the group learnt more about how the

50+20 Management Education for the World Collaborative Initiative: Introduction and roundtable. The 50+20 is a collaborative initiative that seeks to learn of new ways and opportunities for management education to transform and reinvent itself by. They ask critical questions about the state of the world, the emerging societal issues, the dominant economic logic, the purpose of business, the crucial role of leadership, and the challenges facing management education. The ambassador of Switzerland in Brazil, Wilhelm Meier, and Elson Valim of Fundação Dom Cabral (FDC) welcomed the audience at the event jointly organized by the University of St.Gallen Hub and FDC in São Paulo. Right after the event, the co-founders of this initiative, Prof. Thomas Dyllick (director of the Sustainability Institute from the University of St.Gallen) and Prof. Kathrin Muff (president of the Business School Lausanne) made an introduction about the latest outcomes and planned next steps. On October 9th 2014, the HSG Hub São Paulo together with Nestlé Brazil coordinated the live transmission of the Creating Shared Value Conference that took place in Lausanne, Switzerland. The live broadcast of the afternoon session was shown at the headquarters of Nestlé Brazil in São Paulo. Exchange students from the University of St.Gallen, as well as students and professors from partner universities, such as Insper, University of São Paulo and FGV attended the event. The event was an excellent opportunity to bring academia and business closer and to further strengthen the connections of the University of St.Gallen with local Brazilian entities.

Students and representatives of Nestlé, University of St.Gallen, Insper, USP, and FGV-EASP

Attendants actively participated at the live broadcast by posting questions via email or twitter

During a visit in Brazil, Dr. Maria Conti, the professor of the Brazilian Portuguese language course at HSG, made a series of presentations in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro at the Escola Suíça, Colégio Porto Seguro, Colégio Humboldt and at a public school for high school students.

As part of the program to strengthen the relationship between students and professors and to both exchange and discuss possibilities for joint research, the University of St.Gallen frequently goes on a road-show to its partner universities in Latin America. One example is the group visit to the Universidad del Pacifico in Lima (Peru) in 2012 and another is the visit to the University Adolfo Ibañez and Pontificia Universidad Católica in Chile in 2011.

HSG CooperativeLabIn 2010 the HSG CooperativeLab was launched as a joint initiative by the University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo and the Brazil Alumni Chapter. Since then more than twenty traineeship positions have been developed in different companies, including the University Hub office and IILA.

The main objective is to provide students with a “learn by doing” experience in the context of South America in which participants can develop an entrepreneurial mind-set while experiencing a different business culture.

The HSG CooperativeLab is a match-making platform which identifies companies in the region which would be willing to have a foreign student as a trainee, allocated to a specific project with clearly defined performance indicators. One of its main differentials is the involvement of Alumni members as mentors of the incoming students.

The current partner universities in Brazil are:

Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) São Paulo: there are exchange agreements at the bachelor and master level with the Business School (FGV-EAESP), the Law School (FGV-Direito) and School of Economics (FGV-EESP). In addition to the regular exchange programs, there is also a double-degree agreement at the master level in the area of Banking and Finance, as well as a CEMS network exchange program.

University of St.Gallen Alumni Chapter BrazilThe Alumni Chapter in Brazil has approximately 50 members. There are a series of events organized every year and its collaborative network is very strong. One of the most significant connections between the Alumni and the University of St.Gallen Hub São Paulo is their involvement as mentors of incoming students who are part of the HSG CooperativeLab Program, and in research projects connected to the Impact Investing Platform.

Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) Rio de Janeiro: in August 2014, a new partnership was established in Rio de Janeiro, with FGV-EBAPE and the Law School of FGV Rio de Janeiro.

Insper: the partnership between the University of St.Gallen and Insper benefits from a scholarship program provided by Lemann Foundation for the exchange of both students and professors.

Universidade de São Paulo: there are agreements with the School for Business and Economics (FEA), the School of International Relations (IRI) and the School of Social Sciences (FFLCH).

Apart from the ongoing exchange programs, there is an increasing number of Brazilian students carrying out their entire study program in Switzerland due to the excellent reputation of the University of St.Gallen in Latin America.
