Afterlearning about the on-going project at 1505 Habersham, the group set out on a walking tour of the Lincoln StreetInitiative that HSF undertook in the early 2000s. From the President & CEO Change

For preservationists, change is not alwayswelcome. It often meansreplacing somethingfamiliar and valuable withsomething different anduntested. In the case ofreplacing venerablebuildings in any one ofSavannah’s dozen historicdistricts, that can bejarring. Frequently, it is

regrettable. Sometimes, though, it leads to somethinggood. The loss of City Market for a parking deck wasregrettable. The replacement of that same parking deckfor a new Ellis Square is good. It took 50 years tocorrect that mistake, but preservation (and change forthe better) prevailed.

Likewise, in a preservation organization (and anyorganization or business for that matter), change inpersonnel and policies can be uprooting. We getaccustomed to doing things with the same people in acertain way, and we complacently accept the status quo. But as spring in Savannah points out to us each year, gardens don’t just take care of themselves and bloom ontheir own. If they are to thrive and flourish, then tilling, weeding and replanting is more than just a rite ofspring…it’s a responsible way to manage our gardens.

HSF is managing its garden. We are introducing newpersonnel, new policies and new ways of doing things. It’s not just a banal case of ‘out with the old and in withthe new,’ but rather it’s an opportunity to build on whatwas good and make it better. We’re approaching whatwe do with a fresh eye—a more critical eye—to achievegreater efficiency and, ultimately, more effectiveness. We are making tremendous headway in achieving thegoals outlined in our Strategic Plan, and all of those goalslead us to one conclusion—protecting and preservingSavannah’s heritage. And you can see the fruits of theselabors in the success of the recent 76th Annual Tour ofHomes & Gardens, the 2011 Preservation Lecture Series, the upcoming Garden Expo at Trustees Garden, and thevery aggressive programming we have set for May(Preservation Month).

HSF is at the till. We’re working on issues that presentthemselves at meetings of the Historic District Board ofReview, City of Savannah Property Maintenance Division,
