9:10 THE ROLE OF THE JUDICIARy IN SHOWING US WHAT GOOD LEADERSHIP LOOKS LIKEA disastrous event – whatever country and industry it occurs in - is often the subject of a public inquiry and/or criminal prosecution. This talk will look at how those chairing such inquiries and those sitting in judgment at trials and imposing sentences in different jurisdictions may come to the role with no expertise in health and safety law and no technical expertise in the subject matter before them, but who then use their wisdom and analysis of all the things that could have prevented the disaster from occurring, to provide us with a blueprint of learning, applicable to all sectors of business and public services. • Those sitting in judgment often produce very valuable learning for stronger leadership and the motivation for changing behaviour• Having to make the same observations time and time again - are we listening properly? • Highlighting the messages identified by the Judiciary, recognising the value they bring to the debate on enhanced leadership, and guiding in
interpreting what those at the top of a company, and in key roles through the ranks of an organisation should be taking to heartMaDELEINE aBaS, Osborn Abas Hunt, UK, Senior Partner

! 12:10 MOTIVaTIONaL TaLK: What’s the best way to describe what Patrick speaks about in his Leading Safely through Change presentations? Patrick uses his experiences as both a high-altitude mountaineer and change consultant and works with the concept of VUCa (that’s Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity). Of course, you might want to ask, how is climbing a mountain relevant to working on an oil platform. The goal is to work as one team and make it home safely at the end of each day. Most people think that a climb finishes when you get to the top, but that’s not the case! Statistics show that 85% of mountaineering accidents happen on the descent, when complacency and fatigue creep in. It’s no different to the end of a work shift – we can’t afford to lose concentration and drop the ball. In this presentation Patrick tells a story about a career spent at high-altitude and how if we work together as a team, we can all make it back down the mountain.PaTrICK HOLLINGWOrTH, Australia, Motivational Speaker on Leadership, Teamwork & Safety

14:00 CASE STUDy: PRACTICAL STRESS MEASUREMENT – THE WILLIAM GRANT & SONS WAyStress is often overlooked in the workplace as organisations focus on reducing traditional physical hazards. Decreased efficiency, lower moral, reduced mental health and wellbeing can all result from undue stress in the workplace. Without an accurate measure of the mental wellbeing of the workforce action is seldom targeted where it matters most.• Combining existing stress measurement methodologies, simple tools and information already available to the organisation WGS has been able to
get a clear picture of stress across its wider workforce• Armed with the resulting data, a map of the mental health of the organisation can be created, where stress hot spots are easily identified to allow
specific action to be taken. • year on year comparison of the results shows an evolving picture of the stress landscape as actions take effect and new areas of focus ariseKIEraN PHELaN, William Grant & Sons Distillers, UK, Global Health & Safety Director

GETTING IT rIGHT: CONTraCTOr EHS MaNaGEMENT IN A COMPLEX WORLDLarge or small, organizations increasingly rely on contractors – from mailing letters to building facilities. It’s become more difficult to “get it right” in these complex relationships. research conducted by the Campbell Institute has revealed a simple but comprehensive lifecycle approach that can be used to manage all stages of contractor relationships, from pre-qualification, risk assessment, and training to on-job monitoring and post-job evaluation. Using a multi-method analysis of the best in EHS, this research not only outlines the principles all organizations need to consider – it looks critically at where organizations most often struggle and offers suggestions for process improvements.Learning Outcomes: attendees will –• understand the crucial stages of the contractor relationship
lifecycle• learn the best practices to mitigate the top compromising factors
of using contractors• understand the common challenges world-class companies face
in managing contractor safetyJOHN A. DONy, National Safety Council, USA, Director & Campbell Institute, Director EHS & Sustainability

8:40 CASE STUDy: HOW REPUTATION AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT IS DRIVING HEALTH AND SAFETy INTO THE UK BOARDROOMSThe presentation will examine how in the UK recent changes to health and safety laws around individual offences, Corporate Manslaughter and new Sentencing Guidelines have firmly put health and safety in the boardroom:• Good health and safety enhances brand reputation• How legal issues can run contrary to commercial issues• UK‘s approach to increasing the profile of good health and safety compliance• UK HSE Fee for Intervention modelSTEFFaN GrOCH, Health & Safety Lawyer Association (HSLA), UK, Chair & DWF, Head of regulatory

9:40 SPECIAL KEyNOTE ADDRESS: SAFETy FROM THE HEARTSafety from the heart is focused on leaders developing their own habits in order to create the desired safety culture amongst their teams. The presentation includes examples, videos and discussions of incidents that have occurred and provides details of the learning’s from the incidents as well as they effect they have had on individuals involved. The presentation will without doubt touch the emotions and make leaders understand the importance of developing their own safety habits and managing safety because they care about the employees and contractors and not because they want to show a good performance in safety presentations or on the notice board at the gate to the operation.• Focused at changing the way managers and supervisors see their role relating to leading the safety and health culture development• Use of real examples of incidents, videos and experiences over the years• Truly a touching presentation which hits home and gives food for thought on creating our own safe habitsBrIaN DarLINGTON, Mondi, Austria, Group Head of Safety and Health
10:10 FOLLOWErSHIP: WHaT EVEry SaFETy LEaDEr NEEDS TO KNOWMany books on leadership seem to imply that leaders matter a great deal and followers hardly at all. Where followers are mentioned they are sometimes referred to as subordinates and mistakenly assumed to be amorphous, all one and the same. as such we can fail to notice that those who mindlessly go along with an intervention are altogether different from those who are deeply devoted. • It is long overdue for health and safety practitioners to fully acknowledge the importance of understanding their follower groups better.• These distinctions have critical implications for how leaders in health & safety should lead and managers should manage. • With example from practice, it is argued in this paper that an understanding of followership is vital if interventions and initiatives in health and
safety are to be successful. Dr SHaUN LUNDy, University of Greenwich, UK, Occupational Safety, Health, Hygiene & Environment Programmes Leader

12:00 CaSE STUDy: TOTaL WOrKFOrCE SaFETy – VISIBLE SaFETy LEaDErSHIP WITH OUr CONTraCTOr WOrKFOrCEVisible Safety Leadership is working with our own employees but to have an effective project team this concept needs to permeate also through your contractor workforce. The contractors need to be looked on as an extension of your own employees. This can be tricky and I intend to delve into techniques to make this successful. The Discussion will focus on:• Expectations of contractors• Effective contractor qualification and communication• How far do we take training• How to do we collaborate with the contractors to get the right result• Obtaining management commitment to engage contractors in meaningful safety discussions• The effect of contract terms on our influence with contractorsJAy BEERS, AECOM, UK, Vice President Safety, Health and Environment - Europe, Middle East, africa and India
