1. Effect of LEDs on flower bud induction in Chrysanthemum  morifolium  cv. ZemblaMam C. Singh

ABSTRACT: The ef fect of LEDs was stud ied to in duce flower under artifi cial long days (LD) inChrysanthemum morifolium cv. Zembla plants, using light emitting diodes (LED) @ PAR m

80% Red / 20% Blue maintained @ 100 µ mol m -2 s-1 using royal blue light @ 455 nm and redlight @ 640 nm wavelengths and compared with short day (SD) length. Differ ence in growth andflowering response were also in ves ti gated. Stem length is de termined as a function of internodelength which could be the function of attaining min imum num ber of leaves required forexpressing the diurnal response using LEDs. Chrysanthemum  plants exhibited a strong diurnalresponse at tained in leaves and trans mit ted to the apex and took minimum (28 days) andmaximum time (61 days) with an exposure to LEDs with (15h) and with out (11h) addi tional bluespectrum, respectively. However, bud in duction was possible ear liest due to low red/far ratio inthe extended ex posure of plants with blue LEDs.

ABSTRACT: Field exper iments were con ducted for two con secutive years on me dium blackcalcareous soil of Horticultural Instructional Farm, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh.The ex periment was laid out in factorial ran dom ized block design with twenty four treatmentsreplicated three times. The treatments consisted of two va ri eties of chrysanthe mum viz., IIHR-6(V1) and Shyamal (V2), three lev els of nitro gen (100, 200 and 300 N kg ha-1), two levels ofphos phorus (100 and 150 P2O5 kg ha-1) and two levels of potash (100 and 150 K2O kg ha-1).Both the varieties significantly influenced growth and flowering parameters, where, plant height,number of branches per plant and leaf area were observed higher in the variety IIHR-6 duringboth the years and in pooled re sults; whereas higher fresh and dry weight of plant, weight of 10

flowers, flowering span and dry weight of flow ers were recorded in the variety Shyamal. The latervariety also took more days for first flower bud ini tiation and first flower open. Application ofnitrogen at 300 kg ha

-1 re corded sig nif icantly highest plant height, number of branches per plant,

leaf area, fresh and dry weight of plant, flowering span, total fresh and dry weight of flower,weight of 10 flowers and diameter of flower during the first year, second year and in pooled data.The dose @ 300 N kg ha

-1 also took less days for first flower bud initiation and first flower open.

Phosphorus also played a signif icant role in improv ing all of these at trib utes at higher levelexcept, leaf area, fresh weight of plant, num ber of days taken for first flower open and flow eringspan. Effect of pot ash was failed to influence all of these growth and flowering parametersduring both the years and in pooled results also.

ABSTRACT:  A field ex periment was carried out at Navsari Agri cultural Uni ver sity, Navsariduring 2009-11. Pop ulation of fruit fly was observed during 13 (26 March –1 April) - 30 (23-29July) Standard Week (SW) in 2009-10, 2010-11 and pooled, respec tively. High est fruit flyinfestation (36.67 %) was observed on 22

nd SW coinciding with ripening cum harvesting period of

mango which increased with increase in tem perature, relative hu midity, wind velocity andevaporation.

*E-mail : [email protected]: The effect of juice extraction method and recipe and in com bination was studied onthe microbial, sen sory and chemical at trib utes of the cus tard apple RTS beverage stored atambient condition for 180 days with an inter val of 30 day. Mean score of taste panel for colour,taste and overall acceptability significantly (p<0.05) decreased, while, chemical panel in term ofacid ity, TSS, reducing sugar and to tal sugar signif icantly increased. In case of microbialcontamination found in RTS bev erage, bacterial and fun gal growth had occurred at 30 days thenit was decreased.

ABSTRACT: The present studies on genetic variability, heritability and character association inDolichos bean (Lablab purpureus ) were carried out at vegeta ble research farm, Depart ment ofHorticulture, Allahabad School of Agriculture, SHIATS, Allahabad. The experiment having 20genotypes was laid out in simple RBD with three replica tions. It was observed that PUSA SEM-3genotype was found superior in terms of pod yield per plant (2.319 kg). The phenotypiccoeffi cient of vari ation (PCV) was higher than GCV for all the traits. Heritability in broad sensewas no ticed high for all the traits except days to ger mi nation. Higher genetic ad vance wasobserved for plant height, and high genetic ad vance as per cent of mean was found in pod yieldper plant. The traits like plant height, number of primary branches per plant, num ber ofinflo rescence per plant, num ber of flowers per inflorescence, number of pods per inflorescence,number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, pod length, pod width and pod weightshowed positive significant corre lation with pod yield per plant at both genotypic and phenotypiclevels. Number of pods per plant exhibited the high est positive di rect effect on yield at bothgenotypic and phenotypic path level.

ABSTRACT: In order to define the influence of mulching on growth and yield of wa ter melon, anexperiment was laid out as on-farm  trials entitled “Effect of plas tic mulch on growth, yield andeconomics of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus   (Thumb.) Matsum et Nakai] under Nimar plainsconditions of Madhya Pradesh” at farmer’s field in five lo cations at Khargone district of MadhyaPradesh during two con sec utive spring growing season of 2011 and 2012. Wa termelon wasgrown on sil ver-on-black plas tic mulch and with out mulch field. The main vine length, number ofbranches, number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight and yield per hectare were recorded. Itwas noticed that plastic mulch had significant re sponse on veg eta tive growth, yield and net profit.Plants in plas tic mulch treatment had higher yields as cribed due to higher length of vine, number

of branches, number of fruits per plant and average fruit weight. The study revealed thatsil ver-on-black plastic film could be con ducive and benefi cial in en hancing the yield which lead to75.29% and 82.10% in crease over farm ers’ practice dur ing 2011 and 2012, re spec tively with amean value of 78.70% increase over farm ers practice and net profit of wa termelon found suitablefor an early spring sowing under the Nimar Zone conditions of Madhya Pradesh.

ABSTRACT: The study was un dertaken dur ing the sea son of 2009-10 to estimate the cost ofcultivation of marigold flower and returns and marketing margins of different middleman involvedin mari gold flower trade in Kannauj dis trict of Uttar Pradesh. The study was based on infor ma tioncollected from randomly 60 marigold flower growing farmers, com mis sion agent cum wholesalerand re tailers. The overall cost of cul tivation of marigold flower was estimated as rs. 7365 perhectare. The over all gross income and av erage net income from mari gold crop was estimated tobe Rs. 121792 and Rs. 48141 per hect are, re spec tively. The aver age return per rupeeinvestment was estimated as Rs. 1.66, which shows that marigold cultivation was highlyprofit able in the se lected aea. Out of two marketing channels, Chan nel-I (producer-commis sion-re tailer-consumer) was the important channel from producers point of view, whereproducers received more percentage share (35.68 per cent) in consumer’s rupee than thechan nel-II (31.95 per cent). The to tal market ing cost was Rs. 6.90 and Rs. 8.63 per kilogram ofmarigold flower for channe-l and channel-II, re spectively. The ma jor item of market ing cost werethe value of quantity loss and labour charges. In channel-I retailers earned a margin of 10.35 and

ABSTRACT: Front line dem onstrations (FLD) on high yield ing turmeric cv. Megha Turmeric-1were conducted at Ri-Bhoi dis trict of Meghalaya under farmer’s partic ipatory mode during year2011-12. A total of eleven SHGs from nine vil lages involving 122 farmers were partic ipated indemonstra tion covering the to tal area about 7.5 ha area. From the FLD,1152.29 q of freshtur meric was produced from a 7.5 ha area with productiv ity of 156.31 q/ha. The at tractive grossreturn (Rs. 234460 Rs/ha) and net returns (Rs. 141604/ha) with higher B:C ra tio (2.52) were

recorded by the SHGs with adoption of scientific management practices. Pro duction of turmericthrough farmer’s participatory mode with technological intervention (Megha Turmeric-1) not onlyincreased the produc tion of turmeric but also generated employment and de velopedentrepreneurship among tribal farmers.

ABSTRACT:  An at tempt was made to find out the most effi cient and success ful sur facester iliza tion technique for banana micropropagation. Young healthy suck ers of Musa cultivarDwarf Cavendish were washed under tap water and trimmed to a block of 50 mm3 containingshoot tip and rhizomatous base. Field suckers were processed within two hours of uprooting bychop ping down the rhi zome and pseudostem parts, soaking the ex cised tissue block in 0.1%bavistin (broad spectrum fungicide) + 0.05% streptocycline for 30 min at 150 rpm in a ro taryshaker followed by rins ing in double distilled water. After further trim ming to 3–4 cm, tissue weretreated with 1% Cetrimide for 30 min., exter nal sheaths were re moved and fi nally treated withNaOCl (4%) or HgCl2 (0.1%) for varying time pe riod in a lam inar hood. The best asep tic culturesas well as survival of explants were ob tained with mercuric chlo ride (0.1%) for 5 minutes followedby quick dip in ethanol.

ABSTRACT: An experiment was carried out in the Department of Horticulture laboratory,SHIATS, Allahabad.The ex periment was conducted in completely randomized design (CRD)with nine treat ments replicated thrice. There were nine treatments of different con centra tions ofsucrose (3% and 4%), silver ni trate (20 ppm and 40 ppm), Alu minium sul phate (200 ppm and400ppm) and 8- Hydroxy quinoline citrate (200ppm and 400 ppm) in com bination and onecontrol. It was observed that treatment T4 (Su crose 4% + AgNO3 400 ppm) and T8 (Su crose 4%+ 8-HQC 400ppm) gave better re sults and T8 (Sucrose 4% + 8-HQC 400 ppm) had least cost ofmaintenance. Therefore T4 and T8 may be recommended as commercial use for enhancing thevase life and quality of cut Gerbera cv. Maron Dementine.

ABSTRACT: The pres ent investigation was carried out to evaluate the perfor mance of sevengenotypes under polyhouse conditions in sub-tropical mid hills of Meghalaya. Significantdiffer ences were ob served for all the characters. The re sults revealed that genotype Monarchrecorded maximum leaf length (38.75 cm), number of leaves/plant (23.22) and de layed bud burst(123.00 days) and first flower open ing (130.00 days). Maximum stalk length (62.85 cm) and discdiameter (2.97 cm) was recorded in genotype Piton. Genotype Sangria recorded maximum leafbreadth (11.25 cm), num ber of suckers/plant (4.13) and number of ray flo rets/flower head (69.65cm). Max imum plant spread (46.51 cm), stalk diam eter (0.83 cm), flower diameter (12.98 cm)and vase life (11.65 days) was re corded in genotype Pink Elegance. How ever, ge notype Sazourecorded maximum number of flowers/plant (37.65 cm) followed by Pi ton (37.25) and San gria

(36.62). On the ba sis of overall per for mance, ge notypes Pink Elegance, Piton and Sangria werefound prom ising for cut flower production under polyhouse in Meghalaya conditions.

ABSTRACT: The ex periment was conducted in the laboratory of the Department of CIHAB, PSB(In stitute of Ag riculture), Visva-Bharati, Sriniketan (WB). The experiment was laid out in RBDwith nine treat ments each com prising of three replications and ten fruits per rep lica tion. Theresults indicated that rip ening was ini tially de layed by MAP, NAA and NAA+MAP treatments.Fruits treated with NAA+MAP, NAA+PMAP and GA3+MAP showed minimum percentage ofshrink age up to 16th day of storage. The shrink age was signifi cantly de layed by MAP and PMAPtreatments at the beginning. Relatively less percent age of rotting was noted in PMAP and incombination of PMAP and GA3 treatments. It is evident from the re sults that the fruits under NAA,GA3  and PMAP exhibited promising results in extend ing the stor age life of tomato at roomtem perature up to two weeks.

ABSTRACT: Seven novel insecti cides (imidacloprid, fipronil, indoxacarb, endosulfan,malathion, Roket and neemarin) with an un treated con trol were tested for minimizing Eariasvittella infes tation in okra crop. Three sprayings, first at 30 days af ter sow ing and sec ond andthird sub sequent sprayings at 15 days interval were done. Data were recorded on 10

th day af ter

each spray ing. All the treatments were found effec tive in minimiz ing fruit infesta tion over controland indoxacarb was proved to be the best one among all the treat ments. Af ter 10th day of first,second and third spraying, infes ta tion was 14.47, 2.68 and 5.68 per cent, re spectively. Whileneemarin was lesser ef fec tive hav ing higher fruit infes ta tion of 47.38, 30.53 and 33.52 per cent,respectively over control after 10th day of first, second and third spraying. The yield of okra fruitsshowed that indoxacarb recorded the high est fresh fruit yield i.e. 7.00 kg per plot (58.33 q/ha)

with 42.86 per cent increased yield as com pared to control. While neemarin recorded min imumfresh fruit yield i.e. 5.27 kg per plot (43.89 q/ha) with 24.05 per cent in creased fruit yield ascompared with control.

ABSTRACT: The effects of varying planting densities on earliness and fruit and seed yield inmusk melon were in ves ti gated dur ing 2012 and 2013 at Uni ver sity Seed Farm, Ladhowal of PAU,Ludhiana. The results indicated that the wider plant spacing of 1.1 plants per lin ear fur row me ternot only pro duced early harvest but the vines were also healthy and longer than the others.There was signif icant in crease in total yield with higher planting density of 3.3 and 2.2 plants perlinear fur row me ter over recommended planting density of 1.7. But there was decrease in themarket able yield at the higher plant pop ulation of 3.3 and 2.2 plants per linear fur row me ter. The

higher plant ing density of 3.3 plants per linear fur row meter had maximum num ber of fruits perunit area and also produced the boldest seed among all the treat ments and thus had high seedyield in dex. Therefore, if the ulti mate aim is get ting the maximum seed yield from muskmelon,the planting density of 3.3 proved to be the best.

ABSTRACT:  In the study differ ent rec ipes of Aonla Nectar was standardized to explore theprocessing potential of Aonla. There were five different possibilities of recipes. The Nectarprepared from the rec ipes with 20% pulp, 13% TSS and 0.30% acid ity gave highest organolepticquality score fol lowed by Nectar prepared from 20% pulp, 16% TSS and 0.25% acid ity and theconsumer acceptability of the ideal Nec tar was maintained up to fifth month at ambienttemperature.

ABSTRACT:  A field ex periment was conducted for two con sec utive years to assess theef fi ciency of bio-fertilizers at two fer til ity levels on yield and econ omy of potato crop. Re sults

revealed that application 100% recommended dose of nitro gen and phosphorus + Azotobacter and Phosphobacteria gave the maximum tuber yield which was closely fallowed by ap pli cationof 75% recommended dose of ni trogen and phosphorus + Azotobacter  and Phosphobacteria.How ever, both the treatments gave con siderable net return indicat ing 25% saving of nitro genand phosphorus fertil iz ers. Among both the inoculants Bacillus cereus was found better thanBacillus subtillis in potato yield.

ABSTRACT: An experiment was conducted to as sess the effect of post-harvest ap plication ofCalcium Chlo ride on the storage life of mango (Mangifera indica L.) var. Dushehari fruits. Thefully mature mango fruits were harvested and treated with differ ent concentrations of CaCl2 viz.0%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% and stored for dif ferent days viz. 3, 6, 9, and 12 days at roomtemperature. The results showed that post-harvest application of Calcium Chloride(6%) hadproved quite effective in en hancing the shelf life of Dushehari mango fruits up to 12 days at roomtemperature.

ABSTRACT: An investigation was undertaken to study the effect of different concentrations ofIBA on growth and rooting of Citrus limon cut tings un der Garhwal region.The hardwood cuttingsof Citrus limon   cv. Pant Lemon were collected from healthy vig orous shoots of 3-5 year oldplants. The cuttings were planted in one kg ca pacity polythene bags containing soil, sand and

FYM mixture in 1:1:1 (v/v) ra tio. The stem cut tings of Citrus limon  were treated with IBA solutionsof differ ent con centra tions i.e. 1000, 1500, 2000 ppm and control (tap water only) by quick dipmethod. The ex periment was replicated thrice with 10 cut tings in each treatment. Among all thetreatments, the number of sprouted cuttings (6.29), length and diameter of sprout (23.77cm and1.52 cm, respectively), number of sprouts, number of leaves and number of roots/cutting (17.77and 23.00 and 52.42, respectively), and av erage maximum length and di ameter of roots (26.33cm and 1.33 cm, re spectively) were noticed maximum in treatment with 2000 ppm concentrationof IBA.

20. Regeneration of Kagzi lime  (Citrus aurantifolia Swingle) through stem cuttings with the

  aid of IBA and PHBDiwaker* and P.N. Katiyar

*E-mail: [email protected]  : Max imum percentage of cuttings sprouted (24.33%) and maximum num ber ofroots per cutting (7.67) were re corded with treatment IBA 2000 ppm+PHB 1000 ppm. Thetreatment with PHB 1000 ppm recorded min i mum percentage of sprouting (8.83 %). Max imumnumber of sprouts per cutting (7.67) was ob served with T7 and its minimum num ber (2.67) wasnoted under con trol. The length and di am eter of pri mary root (9.33 cm and 2.80 mm) were alsonoted maximum under 2000 ppm IBA + 1000 PHB. The di am eter of sprout (3.53 mm) and thesize of leaves in terms of their length and width (5.67 cm, and 3.83 cm, respectively) wasmaximum with IBA 1500 ppm + PHB 1000 ppm. The maximum dry mat ter ac cumulation in theroots (132.33 mg) was with IBA 2000 ppm whereas, the cut ting treated with IBA 2000 ppm +PHB 1000 ppm expressed the highest survival (77.00%) of rooted cuttings.

ABSTRACT: The pres ent study aimed at evaluation of heritability and ge netic advance insixteen ge notypes of cabbage under Lucknow condition. Findings revealed that high heritabilityin broad sense were observed for vitamin C (99.50%), days to ma turity (98.90%), core length(88.20%), head weight (87.30%), yield (87.20%), leaf width (83.40%) and leaf length (83.20%)whereas, moderate for plant height (78.20%), equitorial length (72.70%), head polar diameter(71.60%), stalk length (71.20%), plant spread (69.80%) and number of non-wrapper leaves(66.00%). Genetic advance as per cent age of mean varied from 6.04 %-50.09% for plant spreadand vitamin C content, respectively.
