Why Are the Jellyfish Taking Over? An Evolved Approach to Workplace Success.

July 16: Overland Park Chapter Meeting

Presented by Jane Walton

Employee disengagement is at an all-time high. Why have so many people 'checked out' and what can be done to engage employees in

a meaningful way? Our newest program, “Why Are the Jellyfish Tak-ing Over?” looks at brain science to understand what people need in

the workplace in order to thrive, and builds on the idea of the work-

place as an ecosystem that requires balance and connectivity as keys to success.

You will learn:

How to realize your organization's vision by implementing business practices that

are connected, clear and effective. What teams need to perform well and worktogether effectively.

How to provide leaders with a plan of action to successfully manage their teams.

President’s Message

SHRMJC Members, As you know, we won’t be having a monthly meeting in June due to the National SHRM Conference that will be taking place later this month. However, we’ve got some exciting events coming around the corner. Please join us on June 4 for our Harvesters volunteer event, on July 8 for Understanding Veteran Talent at our Paola meeting, and on July 16 for our Evolved Approach to Workplace Success meeting in Overland Park. Thank you to everyone in advance for registering early for our meetings- that really helps our planning process. As mentioned at our last meeting, we’ll also be scheduling a social bowling tournament during the latter part of the summer. Please let us know if you’d be interested in volunteering to help out with the planning of this event. Be on the lookout for a more involved newsletter in July. In the meantime, have a great start to the summer! Sincerely,

Matt Smith

Meet Andrea Mc Connell - A HR Student Success Story

I met Andrea Mc Connell in late December 2014 when she volunteered to participate in the SHRMJC Student Chapter. I was excited to hear her input from a students’ perspective, but I also saw an opportunity to serve as a HR mentor. I helped Andrea revise her resume and linked-in profile and encouraged her to attend the SHRMJC luncheons where she had an opportunity to promote herself and abilities to the SHRMJC community. Our SHRMJC members are very supportive and positive to those looking for job or need mentoring. Andrea told me that she that she joined the Army out of high school and started a career as a pharmacy technician. She said “A couple of years ago, I was at a point in my life that I needed to decide what my major would be, and that is when I discovered that I would be great in HR. “ Andrea told me that “As you all know, getting into HR is very difficult, especially if you have no experience. This is why I teamed up with Marilyn, who has been a great help to me, to start networking and being around other HR professionals. I do work full time and have a family, so my time is very limited.” I know that Andrea worked hard on her job search too and recently had some referrals and interviews. On May 12, 2015, I received an email from Andrea which stated: “Marilyn, I just wanted to let you know that I did receive a job offer and I accepted! :) “

Congratulations to Andrea and we wish you much success in your new job! Join SHRMJC and Be Inspired! Marilyn

Doing Business in a Different Way! HR Biz Mixers are “afterhours” events that present SHRMJC members and guests with an opportunity to increase their network of contacts in the HR field. Think of it this way: It’s networking. It’s social. You’re exchanging information and ideas. And…, you’re building connections by meeting new and interesting people while catching up with long-standing friends. Be effective in the best way possible. Relax and unwind at the end of your workday and increase professional relationships at the same time. Do business in a different way. Do it in style. Get noticed and get connected through SHRMJC. Nearly 20 SHRMJC members and guests enjoyed SHRMJC's first Biz Mixer of 2015. They gathered at Granite City in Olathe on May 7 and made new friendships, shared ideas and developed business networks. Two new members were welcomed and job search activities were shared. We hope you can join us next time!

SHRMJC Supports: Women’s Employment Network (WEN)

SHRMJC Family Volunteer Night You can make a difference by helping with our June 4th food sort from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Harvesters warehouse (3801 Topping Avenue, Kansas City, MO). This is a great opportunity to bring your family along and help to educate children ages 8 and up on the importance of volunteering. About Harvesters: Harvesters’ mission is to feed hungry people today and work to end hunger tomorrow. Harvesters is a regional food bank serving a 26-county area of northwestern Missouri and northeastern Kansas. Harvesters provides food and related household products to more than 620 not-for-profit agencies including emergency food pantries, community kitchens, homeless shelters, children’s homes and others. We also offer education programs to increase community awareness of hunger and teach about good nutrition. SHRMJC can make a difference. I can make a difference. We can make a difference. Have you finished or are you just now starting your Summer closet cleaning project? If so, SHRM of Johnson County has an answer for you! In fact, it’s a great way to help women across and throughout our Kansas City community. SHRMJC is pleased to offer, as a service to women of Kansas City who are entering or re-entering the workforce, a “professional wear” clothing drive to benefit The Women’s Employment Network (WEN). The Women’s Employment Network is a local non-profit that offers job-search training and accompanying resources, individualized coaching, and professional case management. Their vision: To advance positive change in the lives of women, their families and the community, one woman at a time. Their mission: To help women raise their self-esteem and achieve economic independence through sustained employment. WEN provides a shoulder to lean on, day care advice, professional wardrobes, transportation assistance and fresh starts. Specifically, WEN specializes in “....turning dreams into reality, heartbreak into hope, despair into determination”. At WEN, women work together to find new jobs and new lives. We invite and encourage all members of SHRMJC and the employees of the companies they represent to participate. To do so: Gather, throughout the next few weeks, gently worn (and laundered) women’s business suits, professional

separates, shoes (size 7 & above), hand-bags and workplace appropriate accessories. Place clothing on hangers or in boxes. Bring all of the clothing gathered to our July 2015 SHRMJC Chapter meeting. We will have “helpers” available to assist you in unloading your vehicle. We look forward to seeing you there! Thank you for your contribution and for your support of this important effort.

Get Involved: An Interview with Cherie Ziegler, Director of Workforce Readiness

How long have you been associated with SHRMJC? I have been a member since 1999.

Tell us about your membership and/or committee experience? In 2009 I joined the Programs Committee under Lenora Larsen. When I got extremely busy with a new job in late 2010 I had to resign from the committee, but had had a wonderful experience. Through my participation on this committee and getting to know Lenora (or actually, her getting to know me), I was advised of a company’s need for an HR Director, and I ended up getting the job (there’s one benefit to being a member!). This year I took on the role of Director of Workforce Readiness, a subject I’m passionate about, having spent some time in the job hunt myself. So many people, in HR or other fields, can use a little help and guidance on navigating the job seeking landscape these days, and I see Workforce Readiness as an integral part of that process. We have put on one speed interviewing event (So You Think You Can Interview) this year and will do another in August, partnering with SHRM-KC and Ottawa University to provide a great experience for those in job transition---it’s also a great opportunity for HR professionals to lend their expertise and give back to the community (there’s another benefit!).

How has SHRMJC impacted your career as an HR professional? It has helped me come out of my shell and learn to be comfortable speaking with people I don’t know yet. It has also given me lots of opportunities to help others, such as with So You Think You Can Interview, using my benefits and generalist experience to help small businesses that don’t have an HR person, and helping to connect those in job transition to those seeking to hire. I’ve also gotten to know so many of the members over the years, and have picked their brains when I have issues come up at work and want to get a second opinion. We are a fabulous resource for each other!

What would you say to a new or potential SHRMJC about the benefits of membership and com-mittee involvement? Get involved as much as you’re able! It’s a very rewarding experience to know that you’ve helped others, and if you’re in a situation where you need help yourself, this is a great way to be surrounded by professionals who want to help you. Not just in a job search, but if you are a department of 1 or 2, you sometimes have the need for other viewpoints, and SHRMJC is a great resource to tap into! Not only that, but if you have a professional certification, you need continuing education units to keep it current (who really wants to take that test again, right?!); getting involved garners you more credits than simply attending the monthly lunch or breakfast meetings. And if you haven’t figured it out from what I’ve said so far, it is really fun!!! Great people to know and establish friendships and/or working relationships with, all for just a few hours per month of your time.
