Finishing touchFinally, we’re going

to disable programmesthat automatically runwhen your computerstarts. This can be a littledangerous, but it’s alsoone of the best ways tospeed up your computer— so proceed withcaution!

Click the Start (Flag)button, type “mscon-fig”and press Enter. Click theStartup tab and you willsee a (probably huge) listof programmes that load

How to make Windows fasterOne of the greatest things about buying a new Windows computer is turning it

on for the first time and being amazed at just how fast it is. It starts up quickly, andwhen you click to open a programme, it pops up nearly instantaneously. You can runmultiple programmes and keep a dozen web browser tabs open, and it still runsquickly — and it even shuts down in a matter of seconds!

But then... your new computer starts to slow down. First, it takes a littlelonger to boot up, but gradually the entire system grows sluggish, and eventuallyit gets to the stage where you have time to make a cup of coffee while your webbrowser loads. Your once-snappy computer has become old.

Fortunately, by performing a few simple tasks, you can speed it back upagain. You may not get it back to its good-as-new speed — and even if you do,as the state of the art marches forward, it will still seem a little slow comparedto newer and more powerful equipment — but you can definitely squeeze a fewmore months (or even years) out of it.

Before we startFor the most part, making the current versions of Windows (especially Vista and

Win7) faster will require you to disable some features. In most cases, you won’t evennotice these features are gone, but you should still proceed with caution. If yourcomputer is really, really slow, it’s probably better to get a handyman in to fix it — ormaybe consider it time to upgrade your entire system.

First stepsTo begin with, your

best bet is to disable theWindows eye candy. After all, what good is apretty interface if it’sunusably slow?

Click the Start(Flag) button, right clickComputer, and selectProperties. Click“Advanced systemsettings” and then, underneath thePerformance section, click the Settingsbutton. Select the“Adjust for bestperformance” radiobutton and click OK.

Click OK again andyou’re done. This willmake Windows lookrather plain — a lot likeWindows 98, in fact —but it should make yourcomputer feel a lot faster, too.

Next, we’re going todisable indexing, afeature that speeds upWindows’ Searchfunctionality. If youregularly use search tofind documents andphotos on your hard drive, you probably want to skipthis step, however. Clickthe Start (Flag) button, type “indexing options”and then press Enter.Click Modify, and you’llbe shown a list oflocations that are indexedby your computer.Remove the check markfrom all of the boxes andclick OK.

Aggressive actionWith those easy steps out of the way, you should now defragment and clean

up your hard drive. After that, clear your computer of malware. These processescan take up to a few hours and may require that you stop using your computerwhile they run, but you can set them up before you go to bed and let them runovernight.

If you use a laptop or netbook, you can opt to squeeze a bit more performance outof your computer at the expense of shorter battery life; if you work with your laptopplugged in, you need not worry. Click the Start (Flag) button, type ‘‘power options’’ andpress Enter. On the next screen, select the ‘‘High performance’’ radio button. Desktopusers can also enable ‘‘High performance,’’ but the performance boost will probably beless dramatic. You can also customize your power plan to change behaviors based onwhether your computer is operating on AC or battery power; we’ll cover doing thatanother time.

when you start your computer up. Now... the trick is to disable as manynonimportant programmes as possible. The problem is, there's no hard-and-fastway to work out which programmes are non-essential. Basically, if it soundsimportant, don’t disable it. If the programme has “monitor” in the name or“updater”, you can go ahead and disable it. If there’s anything you don’trecognize, go ahead and disable that too. If you’re unsure, you can type the nameof the programme into Google — you’ll be surprised at the wealth of informationthat you can find, even about the most esoteric of Startup items. When you’redone, click OK. The next time you turn on or reboot your computer, it shouldboot up a lot faster.—Internet

Come 2050, you can play golf infully transparent plane in open

skies!LONDON, 15 June—Airbus has unveiled a futuristic

concept for a transparent plane that may be everydayair transport in 2050.

With its see-through aircraft cabin, passengers ofthe future will get a window on the world as they flythrough the sky. They will be able to see everythingto the sides and in front of them. The concept cabinunveiled at the Royal Observatory in Green-wich,London, would be a bionic structure that ‘mimics’the efficiency of the bird bone, claimed the company.

It would provide strength where needed, and alsoallows for an intelligent’ cabin wall membrane, whichcontrols air temperature and can become trans-parentto give passengers open, panoramic views. Thecompany believes that mid-century pas-sengers mightbe able to enjoy a game of virtual golf or take part ininteractive conferences, while the cabin ‘identifiesand responds’ to travellers’ needs. In the ‘interactivezone’ there are virtual pop-up projections takingpassengers to whichever social scene they want to bein, from holographic gaming to virtual changingrooms for active shoppers. The ‘smart tech zone’ istailored towards the more functional-orientatedpassenger with what Airbus describes as ‘achameleon-style offering.’

It aims to meet individual needs ranging from asimple to a complete luxury service, but all allowing‘you to continue life as if on the ground’.

“Our research shows that passengers of 2050 willexpect a seamless travel experience while also caringfor the environment,” the Daily Mail quoted Airbusengineering executive vice-president CharlesChampion as saying.—Internet

psychology at the UCDavis Centre for Mindand Brain, and ArneEkstrom-assistant pro-fessor of psychology atthe Centre for Neuro-science, measured aparticular frequency ofbrainwaves called thetaoscillations in the brainsof volunteers during amemory test.

Theta waves areassociated with a brainthat is actively moni-toring something, Rang-anath said.

In the memory test, the volunteers had tomemorize a series ofwords with a relatedcontext.

They later had torecall whether they hadseen the word previouslyand the context in whichthe word was seen.

High theta wavesimmediately beforebeing prompted toremember an item wereassociated with betterperformance.

The work goesagainst the assumptionthat the brain is waitingto react to the externalworld, noted Ranganath.

In fact, most of thebrain is busy withinternal activity that isnot related to the outsideworld – and whenexternal stimuli come in,they interact with thesespontaneous patterns ofactivity.

Type 2 diabetes ups risk ofrecurrent stroke and heart

problemsWASHINGTON, 15 June—In a new study, type 2

diabetes was found associated with an increased risk ofrecurrent stroke or cardiovascular events amongpatients who have had an ischemic stroke or transientischemic attack (TIA).

“Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated withincreased risks of both stroke and coronary heart disease(CHD),” said the study authors.

To come to the conclusion, Alfred Callahan fromVanderbilt University, Nashville, and colleaguesevaluated the risk of recurrent stroke or cardiovascularevents in patients with type 2 diabetes or metabolicsyndrome MetS.

In total, the study included 4,731 participants whohad experienced an ischemic stroke or TIA.

The researchers classified 794 individuals as havingtype 2 diabetes, 642 as having MetS and the remaining3,295 as having neither condition.

Patients with type 2 diabetes were more likely thanthose in the control group to experience another stroke, major cardiovascular incident, or revascularizationprocedure.

Those in the MetS group were not at increased riskof stroke or major cardiovascular events, but weremore likely than those in the control group to undergorevascularization procedures.—Internet

Goodsleepers

havebetter lifequality,

WASHINGTON, 15 June—Getting six to nine hours of sleep per night is associatedwith higher ratings for quality of life and lower ratings for depression, suggests aresearch abstract that was presented Tuesday at SLEEP 2011, the 25th AnniversaryMeeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies LLC in Minneapolis,Minnesota.

Results show that people with a “normal” sleep duration of six to nine hours pernight had higher self-reported scores for quality of life and lower scores fordepression severity compared to short and long sleepers.

These differences were statistically significant in all comparisons. Amongpatients who reported having perfect health, there was a higher percentage of normalsleepers, who also had significantly lower scores for depression severity comparedwith short and long sleepers with perfect health.

“These results are important because they provide more information about theimportance of getting enough sleep, which is usually six to nine hours per night,” saidprincipal investigator Charles Bae, neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic SleepDisorders Centre in Ohio.—Xinhua

Japan finds radiation traces inwhales

TOKYO, 15 June—Japanese whale huntershave found traces ofradioactive caesium intwo of the ocean giantsrecently harpooned off itsshores in the PacificOcean, a fisheries agencyofficial said Wednesday.

Two minke whalesculled off the northernisland of Hokkaidoshowed readings of 31becquerels and 24.3becquerels of caesium perkilogramme, he said, adding that the cause maybe the accident at theFukushima nuclear plant.

The level is far belowthe country’s recently-setmaximum safe limit forseafood of 500 bec-querels per kilogramme,he said.

“There is no dataavailable to comparewhether the readings for

radioactive materials arehigher than normal,” hesaid.

“We will continue tomonitor the develop-ment, as we do for allseafood and marine life”that is caught off thePacific coast, he said.

The Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant hasleaked radioactive waterinto the Pacific since itwas battered by the 11March earthquake andtsunami, which disabledcooling systems, trig-gering reactor melt-downsand explosions.

The Japanese publicand some marine lifeexperts have voiced fearsthat radioactive materialin the sea can concentrateamong large marinecreatures at the top of thefood chain that live for along time.

The government hasbanned fishing in areasnear the crippled nuclearplant, and local govern-ments and fishing coo-peratives are conductingregular radiation screen-ings of seafood along thePacific coast.

Japan hunts whalesunder a loophole to aninternational moratoriumthat allows killing the seamammals for “scientificresearch”.

Japan also argues thatwhaling is an integral partof the island-nation’sculture, and whale meat issold openly in shops andrestaurants.

US man trapped in Russia for 77 yrsspeaks English again after stroke

LONDON, 15 June— An American man who was trapped in the Soviet Union 77years ago - and was forced to learn the Russian language to survive his epicCommunist ordeal - has again started speaking in his native English after sufferinga stroke.

Kenneth Edwards, now 95, recently suffered a stroke, which left him unable tocommunicate with his Russian family and children.

“I am having to learn Russian all over again,” the Daily Mail quoted him assaying in a halting American accent.

“I say something in Russian to him, and he replies only in English,” said hiswife Zoya, 79. “I only understand what he wants to say by his intonation.”

Edwards rarely used English after his idealistic left-wing father Willard movedhis family from Alabama to the USSR in 1934.

His return to speaking English instead of his word perfect Russian has stunnedlocal doctors.

In 1992, when he had a reunion in Moscow with his younger sister Marjorie,he had trouble speaking to her because he had forgotten much of his English. Hehad told her: “I have a Russian wife and Russian children. I speak only in Russian.I think only in Russian.”—Internet

Sundarbans is home to about 400tigers.—INTERNET

DHAKA, 15 June — Bangladesh issetting up a special force to save thecritically endangered Royal Bengal Ti-ger and other animals.

The 300-member force will be de-ployed mostly around the Sundarbansmangrove forests, one of the last refugesof the tigers.

The decision came months after theyseized three tiger skins and a large quan-tity of bones, the biggest haul of illegaltiger parts in decades.

The Sundarbans forests stretch be-tween Bangladesh and India. Around400 tigers still live in the area. Until nowpoaching has not been considered as thechief threat to the tiger population inBangladesh.

But the arrest of a poacher with tigerskins and bones earlier this year raisedfears that an organised poaching groupwas operating in the mangrove forests.

Officials admitted they did not haveenough manpower, resources and train-ing to counter the poachers, who theysaid were using increasingly sophisti-cated techniques to trap the tigers.

Minister of Environment and ForestsHasan Mahmud said that the setting up ofthe new wildlife force was long overdue."The forest department staff in Bangla-desh need more training, because nowthe poachers are very sophisticated," hesaid.—Internet
