“ I am pleased to announce our new performance home will be St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 225 West 99th St, NYC (Entrance on Amsterdam Avenue). Built in 1890, this beautiful limestone Romanesque building boasts Tiffany stained glass, two tracker-action pipe organs, and fabulous acoustics. It also became part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.”

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2019 @ 8.00PM ST. MICHAEL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Special Honoree: Samuel Adler, composer and teacher.Guest Artist: Nic Gerpe, piano.
The NYVS presents the fi nal fi ve works by the 50 composers we commissioned with the support of the ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund. The group will perform the music of Juhi Bansal, Will Healy, Vera Ivanova, Patrick O’Malley, J.P. Redmond, and Samuel Adler, the evening’s honoree and teacher of 20 of the 50 composers. The program will include the American premiere of a work by Mr. Adler to honor the German Jews who died during Kristallnacht on this date 81 years ago. Mr. Adler witnessed these events as a ten-year old child.
On November 9th and 10th, 1938, in the incident known as Kristallnacht, Nazis torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools, and businesses, and killed many hundreds of Jews. Kristallnacht fl agged a turning point in the history of the Third Reich, a marked intensifi cation of anti-Semitic rhetoric and legislation that legalized public violence and aggressive measures. Thus began the genocide of the Holocaust. This concert is made possible, in part, by the ASCAP Foundation Irving Caesar Fund.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 2020 @ 8.00PM ST. MICHAEL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
Experience a monumental collection of expressionist choral music in a single concert.
Oh my, I’m turning 70! Recalling the description of expressionism by musicologist Donald J. Grout, I feel isolated and helpless in the grip of forces I do not understand, and I am prey to inner confl ict, tension, anxiety, fear, and all the elemental irrational drives of the subconscious, and in irritated rebellion against established order and accepted forms. I may as well embrace this fateful day by conducting some of the most extraordinary, passionate, and emotive expressionist choral pieces in the repertory. I guarantee you will never forget this concert. At the very least, it will be extremely cathartic! Harold Rosenbaum

SATURDAY, APRIL 25, 2020 @ 7:30PMST. MICHAEL’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH
A co-production by members of The New York Virtuoso Singers with Parthenia Viol Consort.Guest Artist: Charles Weaver, lute.
This collection of 21 songs, published in 1612, is Dowland’s fi nal publication, and demonstrates the composer at the height of his powers. These works display an unparalleled intensity of expression that would come to characterize the early Baroque era, the likes of which England would not see until the music of Henry Purcell about 75 years later.
Known for music of melancholy, lament, and longing, A Pilgrimes Solace refl ects these deep emotional stirrings with titles including “Disdain me still”, “Sweet stay a while”, “Tell me, true Love”, “In this trembling shadow cast”, “Welcome black Night”, and “Shall I strive with words to move?” Dowland’s music resonates with the yearning heart today as much as it has the past four centuries.

When one considers the greatest masses of all time, perhaps Bach’s massive Mass in B Minor, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor, or Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis come to mind. Nevertheless, countless masses feature smaller forces – thus the title of this concert. Hear “Kyrie eleison” movements by Machaut, Dufay, Josquin, Senfl , Palestrina Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Dvorak, Faure, Kodaly, Hindemith, Vaughan Williams, Britten, Stravinsky, Babbitt, and Wuorinen.
