Legal, regulated businesses play a vital role in ensuring that consumers have access to well-made products and keeping adult products out of the hands of young people. If these products are pushed into an underground market where there is no oversight or motivation to comply with sales age restrictions, purchasing and consuming nicotine will be unnecessarily dangerous. The recent outbreak of lung illnesses being broadly attributed to "vaping" by the CDC is a direct result of overbearing drug policy that encourages products to be made and sold by an underground, unregulated industry. Pushing currently legal nicotine products into such an environment might have similar results - including puting all consumers at greater risk. I along with my fellow members of Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) thank you for considering my comments on this issue. Dear Members Board of Health, I have been smoke free for 3 years and 7 months as the result of a stroke. I switched to vaping a chocolate mint vape. I have never felt better and I am doing fine. Don’t block the flavored vapes as I am afraid it will cause me to go back to smoking. I am doing really good now! Dear Policy Analyst Montano, I am writing as a resident of Washington urging you to resist calls from well-meaning but misinformed activists to enact policies that would ban flavored, smoke-free alternatives to combustible tobacco. This "response" to the public health crisis around blackmarket oil-based cannabis products from states where marijuana is illegal and unregulated is not well-thought-out. It is a political response with potentially dire public health consequences. Specifically, I'm writing to ask you to reject Governor Inslee's order to ban vapor products in flavors other than tobacco. Prior to October 9th, I am encouraging you to work with experts, small businesses, and consumers in order to understand this issue from a public health and harm-reduction perspective. A productive path forward must include adequate representation from all stakeholders - especially nicotine consumers. Dear Members Board of Health, I used flavored vapor juices to stop smoking after 30 years, although I no longer smoke or vape it would have been impossible for me to stop withouth these products. Pmease educate yourself on what's really going on, also pmease remember how many vapors vote.
