About Inauguration, A New Beginning

University presidential inaugurations are special ceremonies that bring academic communities together to officially welcome a new president into office. This public introduction allows the new president to share future goals for the university. It also features the installation: a moment in which participants wear their academic regalia and the symbols of office are presented to the new president.

Hawai‘i Pacific University is joining in this tradition for the first time, making the inauguration of Dr. Geoffrey Bannister a significant milestone in HPU history. The ceremony incorporates HPU’s international reach through the display of more than 100 country flags. HPU’s pride in local origins here in Hawai‘i is represented by an oli, a hula performance, and Hawaiian music selections courtesy of Clarke Bright, bandmaster of the Royal Hawaiian Band. The University’s location in the Pacific and Dr. Bannister’s New Zealand roots are celebrated by the haka of the Maori people of Aotearoa.

History of Hawai‘i Pacific University

Eureka Forbes, Paul C.T. Loo, Elizabeth W. Kellerman, and The Reverend Edmond Walker, four prominent and public-spirited citizens, recognized the need for an independent, nonsectarian liberal arts college in Honolulu. They applied for a charter of incorporation for a not-for-profit corporation to be called Hawai‘i Pacific College (HPC), which was granted by the state in 1965.

In 1967, Dr. James L. Meader became HPC’s first president. Dr. Meader helped develop a comprehensive educational program to meet higher educational needs for the state.

In 1968, Dr. Meader retired and Reverend George A. Warmer became the school’s second president. Under his leadership, HPC implemented academic programs in liberal arts and cooperative education.

Four years later, HPC established its School of Business Administration to address the state’s need for professionally trained business leaders. Chatt G. Wright was appointed dean, and that same year, seven students graduated in the first commencement class.

President Warmer retired in 1976 and Chatt G. Wright became HPC’s third president. Under his leadership, HPC continued to expand and develop throughout the 1980s, and in 1990 became Hawai‘i Pacific University (HPU). Three new graduate degree programs were launched: a Master of Business Administration program in 1986, a Master of Science in Information Systems program in 1989, and a Master of Arts in Human Resource Management in 1991.

In 1992, Hawai‘i Loa College, a small, independent, liberal arts college located on the windward side of O‘ahu, merged with HPU. This merger of two academically strong institutions helped to expand HPU’s role as a leader in higher education for Hawai‘i and the Pacific Basin.

The Oceanic Institute, a 56-acre aquaculture research facility at Makapu‘u Point, became an HPU affiliate in 2003.

In March 2010, HPU’s Board of Trustees announced that President Wright would retire from his position. In February 2011, Geoffrey Bannister, Ph.D. was selected and became HPU’s fourth president on July 1, 2011.
