HPE Servers HPE Apollo 4500 Series Editors Choice

The HPE Apollo 4500 Series is a

remarkable platform geared specifically

to popular large-scale software

development projects, including the likes

of Cloudera, Scality and Ceph. At its

core, the Apollo 4500 mixes the benefits

of JBOD storage with local compute

resources. What makes the 4500 Series

unique, though, is while other vendors

might position a single server with vast

storage resources or an HA JBOD with

two servers, HPE covers that swath and

takes it a step further with the 4510 (one

node), 4520 (two nodes) and 4530 (three

nodes) models. This offers exactly what the object storage guys want depending on how they

configure their platforms. This unique design comes down to the object-store replica demand,

where users build around the need of one, two or three replicas when chosing their level of

storage resiliency. Learn more HPE and SGI Receive Six Prestigious HPCwire Awards for HPC Innovation

The Future of Fibre Channel

Technology is Today

Is Fibre Channel still the best infrastructure for data center storage?

Yes. Fibre Channel remains the de facto standard in networking infrastructure for mission-

critical storage in the data center.

Digital transformation is pushing mission-critical storage environments to the limit, with users

expecting data to be accessible from anywhere, at any time, on any device. Faced with

exponential data growth, the network must evolve to enable businesses to thrive in this new era.

To meet these dynamic and growing business demands, organizations need to deploy

infrastructure that can deliver greater consistency, predictability, and performance. Legacy

infrastructure, however, was not designed to support the performance requirements of evolving

workloads and flash-based storage technology.

What is Brocade Gen 6 Fibre Channel?

Brocade Gen 6 Fibre Channel delivers integrated network sensors, industry-leading 32/128

Gbps performance, and increased business agility to accelerate data access, adapt to evolving

requirements, and drive always-on business operations. The Brocade X6 Director with Brocade

Fabric Vision technology and IO Insight delivers data center-proven availability, breakthrough

performance, and seamless scalability to ensure greater consistency, predictability, and

performance.

What are Brocade X6 Directors?

Brocade X6 Directors are the industry’s most reliable, scalable, and high-performance storage

networking infrastructure designed to meet relentless growth, mission-critical application

demands, and flash-based storage technology. The Brocade X6 Director with Brocade Fabric

Vision™ technology combines innovative hardware, software, and integrated network sensors to

ensure the industry’s highest level of operational stability while redefining application

performance. It provides a modular building block for increased scalability to accommodate

growth for large-scale enterprise infrastructures.

Page 9: HPE TecHub EMEA Technical Bulletin - Hewlett Packard · 3PAR Thursday on Around the Storage Block blog Each Thursday, 3PAR team members highlight 3PAR news and announcements as part

Will the Brocade X6 Director seamlessly support Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe)?

To realize the full benefits of flash, organizations will need to transition their high-performance,

latency-sensitive workloads to flash-based storage with NVMe. The simplicity and efficiency of

NVMe over Fibre Channel enable significant performance gains for flash storage. Moreover,

NVMe over Fabrics enables users to achieve faster application response times and harness the

performance of hundreds of solid state drives for better scalability across virtual data centers with

flash.

Organizations can seamlessly integrate Brocade Gen 6 Fibre Channel networks with next-

generation NVMe over Fabrics without a disruptive rip and replace. Leveraging the efficiency of

NVMe over Fibre Channel, combined with the high performance and low latency of Brocade Gen

6 Fibre Channel, organizations can accelerate IOPS to deliver the performance, application

response time, and scalability needed for next-generation data centers.

What distinguishes Brocade X6 Directors from Brocade DCX® 8510 Backbones?

The Brocade X6 Director is available in two modular form factors, 14U and 8U. Built for large

enterprise networks, the 14U Brocade X6-8 has eight vertical blade slots to provide up to 384

32Gb FC device ports and 32 additional 128Gb Brocade UltraScale ICL ports. The 8U Brocade

X6-4, built for midsize networks, has four horizontal blade slots to provide up to 192 32Gb Fibre

Channel device ports and 16 additional 128Gb UltraScale ICL ports. Each blade slot can be

populated with two optional blades.

For device connectivity, the Brocade FC32-48 FC device port blade provides 48 32Gb FC ports.

To support disaster recovery and data protection storage solutions over long distances, the

Brocade SX6 Extension Blade provides 16 32Gb FC ports, 16 1/10 GbE ports, and 2 40 GbE

ports for FC and IP replication traffic. The Brocade X6 family supports 4, 8, 10, 16, and 32Gb FC;

FICON; and 1, 10, and 40 GbE.

What value does 32 Gbps port speed provide when I currently have sufficient bandwidth at 8/16 Gbps?

Legacy infrastructure was not designed to support today’s dynamic and growing business

demands and requirements for evolving workloads and flash-based storage technology. An aging

network will impede the performance of an all-flash data center.

Gen 6 Fibre Channel solutions with unmatched 32/128 Gbps performance are ideally designed to

enable these applications and unlock the full capabilities of flash. However, the true value of Gen

6 Fibre Channel extends beyond performance and higher throughput. Higher reliability and

innovative integrated technologies—such as IO Insight, Virtual Machine ID (VMID), Brocade Inter-Chassis Links (ICL connectivity), and Fabric Vision technology—dramatically simplify

end-to-end management of large-scale environments and drive down operational costs.

Gen 6 Fibre Channel with Fabric Vision technology delivers powerful monitoring, management,

and diagnostic tools to improve operational stability and dramatically reduce costs. Fabric Vision

technology now includes IO Insight, which provides organizations with deeper visibility into the

performance of their environments. This enhanced visibility enables organizations to easily

identify degraded application performance at the host and storage tiers. As a result,

administrators can quickly identify issues, avoid problems, and meet SLA objectives.

HPE Servers

Can the c7000 Power Input Modules be changed in the field? Yes. If a customer’s requirements change between single phase, 3-phase, or DC, they can order the spare parts to change the Power Input Module. Information on the parts that need to be ordered and the command to change the Input Module Type in the Onboard Administrators can be found in this SAW article. Once the correct part number has been identified, it can be order from the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Parts Store at www.parts.hpe.com. If the customer would like for HPE Services to perform the replacement, contact your local services team and confirm that they can do this using the Installation of ProLiant Add On Options Service SKU UH745E.

Are any of the tape blades compatible with the Gen9 server blades? No, tape blade support ended with the Gen8 blades. If a customer requires local tape in their blade enclosure, a Gen8 server blade and tape blade combination can be used in an enclosure with Gen9 server blades. The HPE Synergy 40Gb F8 Switch Module allows to split a 40Gb port with an splitter cable into 4x 8Gb FC via a cable. Is this also possible on the current Virtual Connect Flexfabric 20/40 modules in the C7000 enclosures? No, unfortunately the VC 20/40 does not support the 4x8Gb FC splitter cable. Indeed, only the SFP+ ports can be used for FC channel connectivity while the QSFP+ ports are only for Ethernet connectivity.

What is the main difference between FDR and QDR switches/adapter? The difference between both technologies is the speed, FDR switches run at 56Gb/s while QDR runs at 32Gb/s. nowadays you can also find in the HPE portfolio EDR switches/adapters which supports 100Gb/s. The InfiniBand Roadmap – Charting Speeds for Future Needs shows the different InfiniBand speeds available today and those that will come in the future.

What happens in case of a power failure and the server has the H240/H240ar Adapter? The H240 or H240ar do not have battery backed write cache, for this reason it is not possible to enable Write-back caching, therefore, there is no need to back up anything since all data is moved directly to the drives. Since no cache is attached to the controller the performance should be lower than with battery backed cache controllers with Write-back caching enabled.

Is it possible to use 512e hard drives with VMware? Yes, VMware recently introduced support for his type of drives in vSphere 6.5, however they are not supported with VMware vSphere 6.0 or earlier version.

What downgrades are available for Windows Server 2016? Windows Server 2016 Standard and Datacenter Edition Base Licenses will include the downgrade kit to Windows Server 2012 R2, same edition. This allows customers to buy Windows Server 2016 now, run Windows Server 2012 R2 now, and migrate to Windows Server 2016 when they are ready. Other downgrade options are also available for HPE customers at the HPE fulfillment website for Windows Server Media and Downgrade. Proof of purchase is required. Downgrade media and keys are delivered via email.

HPE Storage To use Remote Copy with StoreVirtual 3200 do you need to license both the source and target system? Yes, Remote Copy requires that both the source and the target system is licensed with Remote Copy license (included in the Advanced Data Services Suite).

Is it possible to replicate data from older StoreVirtual 4530 to StoreVirtual 3200? Yes, a one-time migration of data from StoreVirtual 4000 systems to StoreVirtual 3200 is supported. You will need the Migration Manager license and in conjunction with the StoreVirtual Migration Manager tool you can migrate data from any StoreVirtual 4000 series systems including StoreVirtual VSA to StoreVirtual 3200. For more information please see the StoreVirtual

3200 Quickspecs.

When adding an additional virtual disk group into a virtual pool in an MSA 2040 do we need to issue any commands to restripe data across the new drives? No. The re-balancing happens automatically; no user interaction is required. Can you present a volume from a MSA 2040 SAS to a VM running on Hyper-V directly (pass-through)? We want to avoid formatting it in VHDX. Do we need to switch to iSCSI or FC arrays to achieve that? We do not have any restriction in this regard; you can either format the volumes in VHDX or present it to the VMs as pass-through disks. This is possible regardless of the interface type (SAS, iSCSI or FC). We are running StoreVirtual 3200 with LeftHand OS 13.1. The option to change the frame size is grayed out in the management console. Is there a way to change the frame size at all? No, not today. Due to an issue with setting the frame size in the SVMC, the feature is not available in the 13.1 release.

In a migration from EMC arrays, are there other multipathing solutions supported besides the native MPIO? Yes, there are different options. For example when the host OS is RHEL 6/7 then Veritas Dynamic Multipathing (VxDMP) is also an option (this under MDM minimal disruptive migration). However, the final decision will require more initial data to be evaluated, such as if host OS, migration type, host clustering and of course source/target array details. For supported configurations please check the HPE 3PAR StoreServ Online Import software support matrix, it can be found at SPOCK (SPOCK Home > Software > Array SW:3PAR) Can the optional Fibre Channel adapter, in the 3PAR 8000 systems, share connectivity to host as well as for Remote Copy links? The Fibre Channel adapter in 3PAR 8000 systems can be shared for connectivity to host and also for Remote Copy FC connectivity. Traffic to hosts and Remote copy links must be on separate ports. I need to replicate data across 15km using HPE B-series fibre channel switches, will the switch handle performance across this distance? Yes, the HPE B-series fibre channel switches are able to handle even longer distances without any trouble. The performance of the link will depend on various factors but one that is directly related to the switch and that must also be ordered is the Extended Fabric license. The Extended Fabrics license enables more buffer credits to be allocated when the distances are longer than 10km. The increase number of buffers will help to send data in a continuously manner and take full advantage of the link.

Could I avoid limitation of using 5GHz band only for mesh links on IAP’s? Unfortunately, this restriction cannot be lifted. On dual-radio IAPs, the 2.4GHz radio is always used for client traffic, while the 5GHz radio is always used for mesh-backhaul.

Do we support CLNP/CLNS in our MSR product line? We confirm CLNP/CLNS are not supported on the HPE MSR router series. Would you be able to confirm if the 7500 switch will shut down automatically if we do not add the fan tray in time and the temperature reaches very high levels? We confirm there is no “shut down” action taken by the switch. It will only raise a warning if the module reach the specific threshold. Is the X121 1G SFP RJ45 Transceiver (J8177C) capable of 100Mb speed in SFP+ slot on 2930F (JL258A)? We confirm the J8177C transceiver doesn’t support 100Mb operations.

On 7500 Switch Series, can you confirm that in two-chassis IRF, when you use JH209A ports for IRF (from two different MPUs in the chassis), ports not used for IRF are still available on other MPUs than the Master MPU? We confirm all ports on JH209A MPUs are available, whether on Master MPU or on other MPUs. Does the 5930-32XG support 10G technology? The 5930 offers 32 ports 40GbE. These ports can be splitted in 4x10G. However, not all the 32 ports can be splitted. There are 24 ports to do the splitting. Only 40-GE interfaces FortyGigE 1/0/5 through FortyGigE 1/0/28 can be split into 10-GE interfaces.
