    Non-linear device characterization is posaible with the HP 81538.Swept 2nd and 3rd harmonic levels of an amplifier can be displayeddirectlyor relative to the fundamental carrier (dBc) when employinlthe optional harmonic measurement apability (Option 002). Ampli-fier hannonics up to 40 dBc can be measured quickly and convenient-lyon a swept-frequency basis far fundamental sisnals as low as 16MHz, using the same est confiluration used o measure pin. Powermeter calibration JM'OVides leveled absolute power o devices hat aresensitive o absolute nput or ~tput levels. Tbc HP 87538 automati-cally controls an HP 436A, 4318, or 438A Power Meter to set thepower anywhere n the test configuration with power meter accuracy.

    The HP 87538 has the capability to perform mixer trackinl andconversion loss measurements. These are possible because he HP81538's tuned receiver can be oft"set rom it's synthesized source bythe LO frequency of the mixer.

    Time Domain AnalysisTime domain responses an be displayed by the HP 81538 with

    Option 010. Tbc instrument computes he Invene Fourier Transformof the frequency domain data to display the reftection or transmissioncoeftlcient versus ime. The HP 81538 offers two time domain modes.The Low Pass mode prov'ldes he traditional Time Domain Reftec-tometer (TDR) measurement apability and gives he response f thenetwork to a mathematically simulated step or impulse response. Thismode gives information of the type of impedance (R, L. C) at thediscontinuity. The 8and Pass ime domain mode, which has only theimpulse stimulus, has no frequency restrictions and provides the time
