D e s c r i p t i o nHP T ruCluster Server Version 5.1A for HP T ru64 UNIX Version 5.1A, the latest in the new generation in the T ruCluster product line fromHP, provides highly available and scalable solutions for mission-critical computing environments. T ruCluster Server delivers powerful buteasy-to-use UNIX clustering capabilities.

By combining the advantages of symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), distributed computing, and fault resilience, a cluster running T ruClusterServer offers high availability while providing scalability beyond the limits of a single system. O n a single-system server, a hardware or software failure can severely disrupt a client's access to critical services. In a T ruCluster Server cluster, a hardware or software failure onone member system results in the other members providing these services to clients.

By extending single-system management capabilities to clusters, T ruCluster Server reduces the effort and complexity of cluster administration. It provides a clusterwide namespace for files and directories, including a single root file system that all cluster members

share. A common cluster address (cluster alias) for the Internet protocol suite (T CP/IP) makes the cluster appear as a single system to itsnetwork clients while load balancing client connections across member systems.

A single system image allows a cluster to be managed more easily than distributed systems. T ruCluster Server cluster members share asingle root file system and common system configuration files. T herefore, most management tasks need to be done only once for theentire cluster rather than repeatedly for each cluster member. T he cluster can be managed either locally from any of its members or remotely using T ru64 UNIX Web-based management tools. T ru64 UNIX and T ruCluster Server software, and applications, are installedonly once. Most network applications, such as the Apache Web server, need to be configured only once in the cluster and can bemanaged more easily in a cluster than on distributed systems.

A choice of graphical, Web-based, or command-line user interfaces makes management tasks easier for the administrator, flexible for those with large configurations, and streamlined for expert users.

    T ruCluster Server facilitates deployment of services that remain highly available even though they have no embedded knowledge theyare running in a cluster. Applications can access their disk data from any cluster member. T ruCluster Server also provides the support for components of distributed applications to run in parallel, providing high availability while taking advantage of cluster-specifics y n c h r o n i z a t i o n m e c h a n i s m s a n d p e r f o r m a n c e o p t i m i z a t i o n s .

T ruCluster Server allows the processing components of an application to concurrently access raw devices or files, regardless of wherethe storage is located in the cluster. Member-private storage and clusterwide shared storage are equally accessible to all cluster members. Using either standard UNIX file locks or the distributed lock manager (DLM), an application can synchronize clusterwideaccess to shared resources, maintaining data integrity.

T ruCluster Server is an efficient and reliable platform for providing services to networked clients. T o a client, the cluster appears to be a

powerful single-server system; a client is impacted minimally, if at all, by hardware and software failures in the cluster.

T ruCluster Server simplifies the mechanisms of making applications highly available. A cluster application availability (CAA) facilityrecords the dependencies of, and transparently monitors the state of, registered applications. If a hardware or software failure prevents asystem from running a service, the failover mechanism automatically relocates the service to a viable system in the cluster, whichmaintains the availability of applications and data. Administrators can manually relocate applications for load balancing or hardwaremaintenance.

T CP-based and UDP-based applications can also take advantage of the cluster alias subsystem. T hese applications, depending on their

With applications that run concurrently on multiple members, scaling isachieved by permitting mu l tipl e cl ients to connect to instances of the service on mu l tipl e cl u ster members, each using a cluster alias to address the service.

The cl u ster al ias su bsystem provides an optional virtu al MAC (vMAC) address that can be associated witheach cluster alias IP address. When configured, the same MAC address is used in all Address ResolutionProtocol (ARP) responses for the cluster alias address, independent of which cluster node is responding tocl u ster al ias ARP requ ests. This permits faster fail over when a new node assu mes responsibil ity for responding to cluster alias ARP requests.
