Strong indicators help to separate originals from potential fakesAt the first glance, originals and fakes might look the same …… the following strong indicators, however, help to separate originals from potential fakes:

Original

② „Install before“ dates on HP inkjet print cartridges and „end of warranty“ on boxes

Fake

① Manufacturing codes on HP print cartridges for laser printers and boxes

Page 8: HP security labels on original HP print cartridge packaging

8 August 2006

① Strong indicators (laser): manufacturing codes

Fake example: the first five digits of the manufacturing codes on the packaging and the print cartridge for laser printers are not identical, e.g. 3C08H2 9A18H8.

Check if manufacturing codes match!

Original example: the first five digits of the manufacturing code on packaging for print cartridges for HP laser printers are identical with the first five digits of the code on the contained print cartridge, e.g. 5B21N1F = 5B21N1FK.

Mismatching manufacturing codes on packaging and contained print cartridges for laser printers should give reason to suspect that counterfeiting is at play.

② Strong indicators (inkjet): “install before” and EOW datesCheck if “install before” and “end of warranty” datescorrelate!

Original example: the “end of warranty” date lies around six months (+/- 2) after the “install before” date: if the HP inkjet print cartridge box indicates September 2007, the HP inkjet print cartridge should indicate e.g. 24 March 2008.Fake example: the “end of warranty” date on the print cartridge does not lie around six months after the “install before date” on the packaging, e.g.September 2007 12 January 2005.

Disaccording dates on packaging and contained inkjet print cartridges should give reason to suspect that counterfeiting is at play.

• Print cartridges are not delivered in HP’s normal packaging, or the packaging looks used or appears to have been tampered with.

• Quality of the printout is poor and/or inconsistent.

• Print cartridges show an extremely high failure rate.

If one or more of the following product-related indicators apply, there is reason to become suspicious that a product is not original.

• Dubious internet or e-mail offers, which incorporateany of these indicators

• Any price which is obviously “too good to be true”

• Insistence e.g. on cash-on-delivery shipment

• Any telemarketing offers by an alleged „HP representative“

If one or more of the following sales-technique indicators apply, there is reason to suspect that illegal scheming is at play.
