Recovery System and Hard Drive Space

HP Pavilion home PCs with Windows XP feature a “recovery” partition included on the hard drive, thus eliminating the need for recovery CDs that may get lost or damaged. The recovery process from the hard drive (either application or operating system) offers the following advantages:

Selective: Ensures that the recovery data is matched to the particular HP Pavilion home PC model. You can easily recover only the application or system software you need.

Non-destructive: By recovering only the software you need, you preserve user data and files.

Fast: Recovering only the necessary software components, the recovery process is shorter and faster from the hard drive.

Instructions for using system recovery and application recovery are in your Quick Start Guide; refer to the section “Using Application Recovery and System Recovery.” For information on viewing the space used by the recovery partition on the hard drive, as well as steps for deleting undesired software titles, refer to the section “Freeing Up Space on Your Hard Disk Drive.”

In the event of a warranty hard drive failure, standard warranty terms apply: a new “imaged” hard drive or replacement PC that includes the Windows XP operating system and the recovery partition, as well as all pre-loaded software programs.

eRecovery CDs

Consumers who wish to have recovery CDs may purchase those CDs for a minimal shipping and handling charge. Based on HP’s contractual agreements with its software partners, there are three approved scenarios in which customers may wish to order Recovery CDs from HP:

The original hard drive has failed and the customer does not want an imaged hard drive from HP (for example, out-of-warranty).

The original hard drive has been replaced by a larger capacity hard drive.

The original hard drive has been reformatted orre-partitioned.

Important: This recovery CD set is a complete image of the original HP Pavilion home PC hard drive contents and is matched to your model number. When using the recovery CDs to recover the hard drive, any files or software that you created, saved, or installed on the computer will be overwritten. Therefore, please remember to back up your files prior to using your recovery CDs.

To order recovery CDs, contact the HP Customer Care Center at 208-323-2551.

Introducing the Internet

What Is the Internet? The Internet is a group of computers thatcommunicate with each other through telephonelines, digital service, or cable lines. Each Internetcomputer is independent, and its operatorschoose which files to make available to users ofthe Internet. To connect your PC to the Internetand use the information and services availablethere, you need an ISP.

Setting Up and Using the Internet

32 HP Pavilion home PC

What Is an ISP?Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are businessesthat give you access to the Internet, and most ofthem provide an electronic mail service (e-mail).There is usually a monthly fee for this service.

The types of connection vary and may be atelephone dial-up modem, a LAN (local areanetwork), cable modem, or DSL (DigitalSubscriber Line).

When your computer connects to the Internet, itis actually communicating with the ISP’s Internetcomputer. The ISP verifies your account and thenprovides you access to the Internet. You use aWeb browser program to search, find, anddisplay Web site information. Some ISPs allowyou to use the browser program of your choice. Some ISPs provide their own browser.

What Is the World Wide Web?The World Wide Web (WWW), also calledthe Web, is a public part of the Internet usedby individuals, companies, governments, andorganizations. These individuals and groupshave created millions of Web site pages insupport of their activities.

A Web page is a file or group of files that auser can access by entering the Web page’s filelocation, or URL.

What Is a URL?The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) identifies afile location, typically in the form

http://www.name.extension

The URL contains the protocol and the pathwayto a site and may include the path to a specificfile within that site. Each period, or dot, in theURL separates elements within the address. Forexample, you will see the URL extension .comused by companies. When you enter the URLinto your browser Address box and press theEnter key on your keyboard, the browsercontacts that location and displays the Webpage for you.

What Is an E-Mail Address? When you use e-mail, your e-mail addressidentifies the electronic post office box wherepeople can send you electronic mail. E-mailaddresses have the form

name@domain_name

The domain name is usually the name of theISP or organization, and includes an extensionidentifying the kind of organization the ISP is.

For example, if your name is Jane Jones andXYZ is your ISP, your e-mail address might be

[email protected]

with the extension .com indicating that XYZ isa business. For information on using e-mail, see“Sending and Receiving E-Mail” on page 44.

How Do I Search the Internet? The browser program you use includes a Searchfeature. You may need to click a button or selectthe feature from a menu to display it, dependingon the type of browser program it is.

The Search feature provides a box where youenter a question or a word that describes theinformation you want to find. If you enter one ora few general words, you may get many generalresults. If you enter several precise words, youusually get fewer but more specific results.

Page 63: hp pavilion home pc - HP® Official Siteh10032. HP Pavilion home PC brochure (select models) ... dvd-rom or hp dvd writer drive ... personal finance, music, and entertainment. Alerts

1 Click Start on the taskbar.

2 Click Search.

3 Click Search the Internet. (You may haveto scroll down in the list to see this option.)

4 Type a word or question into the Search box.

5 Click Search.

The computer connects to the Internet (ifneeded), performs the search, and displays theresults. Click a link in the results list to displaythe Web page.

There are also Web sites specifically created forsearching the Internet. These are called searchengines. Search engines use a number of waysto find information.

Setting Up the ModemThe modem is used for connecting to an ISP thatprovides telephone dial-up connection to theInternet. There are other ways to connect to theISP that do not use the telephone modem, suchas a LAN (local area network) or DSL (DigitalSubscriber Line). See ”Setting Up the NetworkInterface Adapter” on page 36 if you areconnecting through a LAN. Check with yourISP for specifics on your connection.

Note: Your computer may not come with a modem.

Before you can connect to the Internet and sendor receive e-mail and faxes using telephonedial-up, you must connect the telephone line tothe modem, which is in the computer.

Each title is divided into multiple chapters.A chapter is a particular segment or scene inthe movie. When watching a DVD movie, youhave the ability to jump to the next chapter, theprevious chapter, or to a specific chapter.

A single image in a movie is called a frame.

Using Country/Region CodesDVDs sometimes come with country/regioncodes imprinted as part of the disc data. Thesecodes prevent DVD movies from being playedin countries/regions of the world that aredifferent from where they were sold. You canplay DVDs from other countries/regions only fivetimes before the country/region code locks andbecomes permanent. Once the code locks, youcan only play DVDs from that country/region.When the country/region code locks, if youneed help, contact HP Support.

The country/region number is usually placedover a world globe printed on the DVDpackaging and disc.

DVDs without country/region codes will play onany player or drive in any country/region.

The six major DVD countries/regions are:

 Country/Region 1: North America Country/Region 2: Japan, Europe,

Middle East, South Africa Country/Region 3: Southeast Asia Country/Region 4: Australia, New

Zealand, Mexico, Central and South America Country/Region 5: Northwest Asia,

North Africa Country/Region 6: China

WinDVD is not pre-set to a particularcountry/region — the country/region code ofthe first DVD movie you play determines yourDVD country/region.
