Except where noted, the features descri b ed i n thi s Qui ckSpec apply equally to Alpha and VAX systems. OpenVMS Cluster Softwareli censes and part numb ers are archi tecture speci fi c; refer to the Orderi ng Informati on secti on of thi s Qui ckSpec for further detai ls.

    I n t r o d u c t i o nOpenVMS Cluster Software i s an OpenVMS System Integrated Product (SIP). It provi des a hi ghly i ntegrated OpenVMS computi ngenvi ronment di stri b uted over multi ple Alpha and VAX systems. In thi s Qui ckSpec, thi s envi ronment i s referred to as an OpenVMS Cluster.Systems i n an OpenVMS Cluster system can share processi ng, mass storage (i ncludi ng system di sks), and other resources under a si ngleO p e n V M Ssecuri ty and management domai n. Wi thi n thi s hi ghly i ntegrated envi ronment, systems retai n thei r i ndependence b ecause they use local,memory resi dent copi es of the OpenVMS operati ng system. Thus, OpenVMS Cluster systems can b oot and shut down i ndependentlyw h i l e b e n e f i t i n g f r o m c o m m o n r e s o u r c e s .

Appli cati ons runni ng on one or more systems i n an OpenVMS Cluster system can access shared resources i n a coordi nated manner.OpenVMS Cluster software components synchroni ze access to shared resources, allowi ng multi ple processes on any system i n theOpenVMS Cluster to perform coordi nated, shared data updates.

Because resources are shared, OpenVMS Cluster systems offer hi gher avai lab i li ty than standalone systems. Properly confi guredOpenVMS Clustersystems can wi thstand the shutdown or fai lure of vari ous components. For example, i f one system i n an OpenVMS Cluster i s shut down, users can log i n to another system to create a new process and conti nue worki ng. Because mass storage can b e shared clusterwi de, thenew process i s ab le to access the ori gi nal data. Appli cati ons can b e desi gned to survi ve these events automati cally.

All OpenVMS Cluster systems have the followi ng software features i n common:

The OpenVMS operati ng system and OpenVMS Cluster software allow all systems to share read and wri te access to di sk fi les i na fully coordi nated envi ronment. Appli cati on programs can speci fy the level of clusterwi de fi le shari ng that i s requi red; access i sthen coordi nated b y the OpenVMS extended QIO processor (XQP) and R ecord Management Servi ces (R MS). Shared b atch and pri nt queues are accessi b le from any system i n the OpenVMS Cluster system. The OpenVMS queue managercontrols clusterwi de b atch and pri nt queues, whi ch can b e accessed b y any system. Batch j ob s sub mi tted to clusterwi de queuesare routed to any avai lab le system so the b atch load i s shared. The OpenVMS Lock Manager System Servi ces operate i n a clusterwi de manner.
