Durability Classification Types
Wallcoverings are typed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) in accordance to the ASTM F793 / CCC-W-408-D standard and test procedures.

EN 233 is in accordance with the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations. All countries of the CEN are bound to implement the national organization’s European Standards.
EN 233:2000 –Specification of wallcoverings in roll form
CEN members include Austria, Belgium, The Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Requirements for finished wallpapers, wall vinyls and plastic wallcoverings
A European Standard that defines requirements for cleanability and color fastness, specifies requirements for marking and gives a designated system.

EN 233 – Cleanability and Markings
HP PVC-free Durable Smooth Wall Paper passes DIN EN 233-2000 „Wave 1“ for Spongabilitywith excellent color fastness ratings after printing with HP Latex inks.
SPONGEABLE (wave 1)
A wallcovering from which the
adhesive may be wiped off the
face of the paper with a damp
soft cloth or sponge at the time of
hanging without causing visible
damage, providing it is done
while the adhesive is still damp.
No subsequent washability is
claimed or implied.
WASHABLE (wave 2)
A finished wallcovering from
which dirt and some domestic
water-based stains may be
cleaned carefully from the front
face with a damp sponge and
soapy water. Oils, fats, and
solvent-based stains are not
expected to be removable.
EXTRA-WASHABLE (wave 3)
A finished wallcovering from
which dirt and most domestic
water-based stains may be
carefully cleaned from the front
face with a wet cloth and soapy
water. Oils, fats and solvent-
based stains are not expected to
be removable, but some greasy
stains may be removed if action
is taken immediately after
contamination
EXTRA-WASHABLE (wave 3)
A finished wallcovering of
superior cleanability from which
dirt and most domestic water-
based stains may be cleaned
from the front face with a sponge
or soft brush and a mild detergent
or a mild abrasive. Oils, fats and
solvent-based stains may also be
tackled immediately after
contamination.
