InstallationTeamWe install from The Orkneys to Guernsey, ourinstallation department is comprised of 3 mainteams of directly employed fixers. They haveundertaken the rigorous Howells training matrixfor all our glazing options. Comprised ofindividual training on every application and it isonly when they have reached our requiredstandard are they allowed to accompany ourfixing team onsite. IntroductionHowells Patent Glazing Limited (HPG), is a wellrespected manufacturer of Patent GlazingSystems since 1973. Our products are mainlysupplied to the commercial sector and theyinclude an exclusive glazing bar range in theirown system to fulfil most overhead glazingrequirements.

Products are supplied to main contractors andalso to local builders. We can also act as MainContractor, taking on small elements of buildingwork and supporting framework. We directlyemploy our fully trained fixing teams whichensure Howells quality is maintained fromenquiry through to job completion.

The HPG bar system can be used for manydifferent applications, from patent glazing,through to canopies and roof lights. The rangeprovides for inverted glazing bars to suit variousspans. Traditional types of bar can also beprovided if required, such as the heritage wingbar. These bars can incorporate the HPG tophung opening vent or smoke ventilator.

The system is suitable for use in railway stations,care homes, shopping centres, schools, retailcomplexes, heritage buildings, domesticapplications and factory units.

We have a wide portfolio of works that we haveundertaken including schools, colleges, nursinghomes for which we have undertaken coveredwalkways, pre formed rooflights, barrel vaults,canopies and single and double pitched roofs.

Our contracts have also included domesticinstallations of swimming pool covers, rooflights,lantern lights, single and double pitchedrooflights and conservatories including portalframes, if required. Industrial/commercialapplication of our products have includedcommercial buildings, airports and shoppingcentres with contract values ranging fromaround £2,000 to a substantial £1,000,000.

We can also provide portal frames and giveadvice on the requirement of structural supports.

Our own patented system is made fromextruded aluminium alloy complying with BS EN755-9:2008, the designation 6063T6 ancillarycomponents such as flashing, closuresweathering and gutters are provided frompreformed aluminium alloy.

The bars can be supplied in mill finish, anodizedto BS EN ISO 7599:2010 or powder coated to BSEN 12206-1:2004 in a wide range of colours.

We have now diversified into supplying a barcalled VT plus. This system is fully thermallybroken to meet the ever increasing demands forthermal efficiency. Low maintenance materialsto combine both modern and traditional andauthentic appearance of timber structures.

Our family run firm undertake contracts on asupply only or supply and install basis withinstallation of patent glazing in both roof andvertical applications using single, doubleglazing or polycarbonate sheet. All bars aremanufactured in the UK and assembled at ourfactory complex in the West Midlands. Mostorders can be accommodated within an 8 weeklead time from approval of drawings, ifnecessary, and shipped to sites by our tailoredtransport.

We have a dedicated onsite Sales, Estimating,Technical and Contracts departments to supplythe requisite support. Key staff have over 150years combined experience within the industry,giving HPG in-depth expertise in the design ofroof and vertical systems ensuring that thecustomer gets the best advice on the type of barrequired to fit the purpose of the project.

ControllingthermalefficiencyWe have developed a range of bars that address thethermal efficiency requirements of the modernbuilding practices. We are proud to say that becauseof this dedication to customer requirements, oursystem is now one of the most thermally efficientsystems in the market place today.

Both of the internal and external components arecompleted isolated from each other by means ofeither polyamide strip, thermal barriers, insulation andisolators, so there are no cold bridges, thereforereducing temperature transfer to a minimum.

A feature of our system is that both the glass and theglazing bar system do not project outside our eavesbeam, i.e. reducing a cold bridge even further.

Our system is designed that when used with thestandard 28 mm double glazed units, which has acentre pane U value as low as 1.0 W/m2. This can befurther reduced to an amazing 0.6 W/m2 by using tripleglazing (this is dependant of the roof style).

All our bars are manufactured in the UK andassembled right here at our factory complex inthe West Midlands. They can be supplied invarious lengths to suit your requirements.

They can accommodate glazing options thatrange from 6 mm right through 32 mm units. Thiscan be achieved with polycarbonate, multiwall,single, double or triple glazed options.

All our bar systems can be finished in a powdercoated RAL colour of your choice; satin, metallic,sensation or gloss, annoised or left in its originalform of mill finish.

Product Description

This rafter glazing bar can be used as a glazingmedium on timber framed, steel and aluminiumstructures.

The visual impact of this system is quite adramatic aesthetic inside the building. As thealuminium bars sit on the wooden rafters, theview from below is of natural timber, which isprotected from weather as it will never beexposed to the elements.

These bars can be painted in any RAL colourand when installed with double glazed units,the combined thermal properties ensure thatthe system meets with the new Document Lstandards.

This system will accommodate a multitude ofdifferent thicknesses from 6mm to 48mm bysimply adjusting the length of external capssecurity screws. (However 28mm D/G is ourstandard) Hip / Ridge / Jack bars alsoavailable.

The caps can be supplied in either ornate orsquare finish.

HG1Self SupportingGlazing System

Product Description

HG1 is an aluminium glazing bar for single ordouble glazing options from 6 mm through to 50mm, with self support properties.

This is an alternative to the traditional stalked typeof glazing bar option, which gives a compactdesign without loosing the thermal and strengthintegrity.

This strength is derived by the internal concealedstalk and has a further screwed on cap. All ofwhich are powdered coated to a choice of RALcolours.

Cap options are available in sloping or square. Wecan also fabricate bespoke aluminium flashing tosuit.

Normal Span for this bar range from 1000 mmthrough to 1500 mm. This is dependent on glassloadings and location of contract.

GlassOptionsThere are many different glass specificationsto choose from.

Our preferred supplier is Pilkington Glassas they are an established company anda household name.

Our standard specification for glass is28mm Clear toughened double glazedunits (with a centre pane U value of 1.2W/m).

However, we do offer a 50mmtripleglazed unit option (with a centrepane U value of 0.7 w/m2).

Glass upgrades such as Activ SelfCleaning and also Activ Blue or Neutral(Grey) Solar controlled options areavailable just to name a few.

Large Moulded Gutter.


Roof VentsOur roof vents are made to measure andcan be fitted stand alone into a roof, or formpart of an overhead glazing solutionrequiring ventilation.

They have the benefit of being able toaccommodate single 6 mm glass through to50 mm triple glazing.

Dependant on the purpose, they can beManual or motor operation to 230 volt or 24volt and can be powder coated to anystandard RAL colour.

Other vents that are available aresmoke/heat, rain, access, walk on,domed/preformed or trickle.

Vent SystemWe have developed our own vent system, to slotwithin our roof patent glazing bars. They havebeen designed to accommodate all types of roofpatent glazing applications, utilising single glassor double glazing to suit customer requirements.

The system comprises roof mounted pneumatic,electrically operated opening ventilatorsconnected to a remote control panel or manualworm gear controlled operation using anoperating pole

They come in various options such as smokeventilators. These are designed to aid the safeevacuation of premises where the system hasbeen installed.

All ventilators comply with the recommendationsof BS 7346 part1. Accreditation certificate on thetest carried out at Warrington Fire ResearchCentre is available for inspection upon request.

The system also provides for the ventilators to beused on a day to day basis to provide naturalventilation if required. If inclement weatherprevails the system can incorporate rain sensorsto automatically close the ventilators.

Note! The fire signal is master and will override all other signals.



CanopiesOur canopies come in many designs andcan incorporate individual design criteria,such as logos, corporate colour matchesor shape.

Some of our own bars can bend and sowe are able to offer barrel vault or waveoptions, as well as pyramid, mono or dualpitch or an incorporation of severaloptions.

Our bars can be mounted onto a raftersystem, supported by steel structure orself supported.

RailwaysHowells has vast experience in railway stationrefurbishment. Stations we have worked on includeWindsor Royal, Temple Meads, Melton Mowbry,Loughborough, Shrub Hill, Stoke, and Kettering.

The criteria to be taken into account when workingon railway stations is complex; the mainconsideration being that stations are never closed.We have worked through the night to accommodateclients requirements. We have worked through thenight to accommodate clients requirements. The typeof work we have carried out includes removing oldand reinstating overhead glazing using heritage andcurrent patent glazing bars, installing canopies,curtain walling and specialist glazing. An example ofthis is at Windsor Royal which features a leadedsemi-hemispherical dome.

DomesticInstallationsDomestic installations are a key part of ourbusiness too, these range from swimming poolenclosures to rooflights and patent glazing. Wework closely with the aesthetics of the existingpremises and the clients end vision.

All our projects start with the client’s concept andour aim, with the help of our technical sales,contracts and drawing office is to producedrawings for approval that mirrors this idea asclosely as possible.
