Howe Happenings Fall 2015 David A. Howe Public Library

The David A. Howe Public Library is

thrilled to announce that on Friday,

October 2, 2015, award-winning writer

Joyce Carol Oates will speak in the

Nancy Howe Auditorium.

Oates has authored over 100 books,

including bestselling novels, short story

collections, poetry, plays, essays, and

memoirs. In fact, her latest memoir—

The Lost Landscape: A Writer’s Coming

of Age— is due out this September and

will recount the author’s childhood years

growing up in Western New York. The

theme of her talk—the use of Western

and Central New York as the backdrop

in many of her works of fiction—will

mesh well with this latest literary effort.

Her work spans many genres, topics and

themes. Literary critic Louis Gates, Jr.,

wrote of her: “A future anthropologist

equipped only with her oeuvre could

easily piece together the whole of post-

war America.” Another critic remarked,

“Few writers move so effortlessly from

Grant News For the David A. Howe Public Library

Theater

Brought back to the Nancy Howe Auditorium stage for a second

year, audiences of all ages will delight in this classic holiday

ballet, The Nutcracker. The Genesee Dance Theatre, the official

dance company of the Houghton Movement & Arts Center, will

perform original choreography with local and guest artists set to

Tchaikovsky’s famous score. Learn more at geneseedance.org

The library received $11,775 from the F.T. and Anna C. Manley

Memorial Trust to establish a “makerspace” in the library’s

Technology Center. Makerspaces provide access to a wide

array of technologies, from sewing machines to 3D printers,

and offer instructional opportunities for learners, as well as

spaces for groups to come together to create just about

anything!

The Wellsville Elks Lodge awarded a $2,000 Gratitude Grant to

renovate and beautify the downstairs book stacks in the

youth section of the library, provide new computer tables,

and help create an attractive and comfortable reading area

for teens on the main floor of the Youth Services

Department. The Friends of the David A. Howe Public

Library also gave funds totaling $1,270 to purchase a

loveseat and chair for the teen reading area.

The Nancy Howe Auditorium received $3,200 in funds for

programs from the Community Arts Grant funded by the

New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization

Program through the Cattaraugus County Arts Program.

This grant was facilitated with additional funds from The

Monday Club ($1,000) and the Friends of the Library

($500) to offer concerts and family programs in the Winter

and Spring of 2015.

Join us for an Agatha Christie mystery presented by The

Valley Theatre. After a wrongly convicted woman dies in

prison, it is up to her daughter to recreate the scene of the

crime and exonerate her mother’s memory.

The Valley Theatre has graced our stage for the past two

years with Steel Magnolias, The Odd Couple, and Spinoff.

The Nancy Howe Auditorium now has heat, thanks in part to

a 2012 NYS construction grant of $38,000! The library

received an extension for completing the grant until 2015,

allowing the director and the board of trustees time to

consider options for the most efficient and sound way to

heat the auditorium. A separate high-efficiency hot water

boiler was decided upon and was installed last June.

Now, when the rest of the library is warm in the spring

and fall months, only the auditorium boiler will be turned

on to heat this chilliest part of the facility. The new

separate boiler will save the library hundreds and even

thousands of dollars in annual heating costs.

Two additional NYS construction grants (2014 and 2015) are

in the pipeline, for $121,867 and $101,763 respectively.

These funds are allocated to the upgrading of the library’s

overall heating system, including replacement of the

recently removed sixty year old steam boiler with a

hybrid system comprised of a high-efficiency hot water

condensing boiler to provide heat to the main building

fans in the milder spring and fall months, and a high-

efficiency steam boiler to provide radiator heat in the

coldest winter months. This project will deliver reliable

heat to the building, safeguarding the structure during

cold snaps, maintaining even temperatures throughout the

library, and saving thousands of dollars in heating costs

every year.
