How You Use Your WordsThe Bible says to “let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”1 Our words are important. Not using mean and unkind words is a good start, but it is also important to use your words to say good things, so that others know you care for them and appreciate them. The things we say make a difference to others.

When your parents tell you they love you, you feel loved. When your teacher congratulates you on work that is well done, it makes you happy. When your older sister uses kind words to comfort you, this makes a difficult situation easier. When your friend tells you how much he likes playing with you, this makes you feel important. You too can use words to encourage others and show love.

Kind words let people know that you appreciate what they do. Helpful words are a way to lend a hand and to show others that you care. Good words are uplifting and make others happy. Good and kind words build friendships—they can bring joy to others.
