What started the Revolutionary War? New Taxes for Colonists caused quarrels and

conflict. Parliament decided that the colonists needed

to pay for the cost of the French and Indian War.

The British forced a tariff on the goods they sold.

People divided into the Loyalists and the Rebels.

“No taxation without representation” Stamp Act Sugar Act Tea Taxes The Boston Tea Party was a result of

these taxes, showing defiance. Colonists had not agreed to these

taxes.

The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere and William Dawes British were sent to Lexington/ Concord British goal: Arrest Samuel Adams and John

Effect of the fight at Lexington and Concord Colonists against the British are now

called the Patriots. Sons of Liberty were formed British were in search for weapons Since they were warned by Revere and

Dawes, the weapons were moved. Minutemen were ready and the first

shots were fired.

Declaration of Independence1776

Thomas Paine published “Common Sense” which helped change public opinion in the colonies.

Independence means freedom to govern their own

Congress waited a month before taking a huge step towards independence.

A committee drew up the declaration.

Independence Day

Jefferson gave the Declaration of Independence to Congress on June 28th

Richard Henry Lee’s idea of cutting ties with Britain was approved on July 2nd.

On July 4th 1776 the Second Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence.

We have continued celebrating this day, today.

Treaty Of Paris

Battle of Yorktown did not end the Revolutionary War.

Treaty of Paris was the end. This was an agreement or negotiation

between the British and the Americans. This treaty named United States as a

new nation and described the borders.
