IMPORTANT INFORMATION

HOW TO COMPLETE YOUR IVET INSTITUTE ASSESSMENTS As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) the IVET Institute is required to ensure that all of our VET in school students complete compliant assessments that have been thoroughly mapped in accordance with ASQA’s (the National VET regulator) requirements. This assessment must be completed for every student for every unit of competency completed. Your students will be provided with all assessment materials online through IVET’s on line portal IVETConnect (www,ivetinstitute.com.au). Students are required to log in with the secure password given to them by IVET and complete all of their assessment online. Each student is required to complete every assessment that is part of your schools program. All assessors are required to mark the students work on line and competency cannot be achieved until this occurs. All other materials provided by IVET, including student and teacher resources, are to support you in your teaching; we do not require any tasks, assignments or activities from these resources. LOGGING IN 1. Prior to completing any assessment tasks, trainer must first set up their classes on line. This is a very easy

process and can be completed in three simple steps. 2. Trainers are to access the IVET Connect logo located on the IVET Institute website. www.ivetinstitute.com.au

3. Trainers will need to enter their Login and Password details to access IVET Connect. (this code has been sent

to all trainers via email)

PARTICIPANTS IN SPORT AND RECREATION – DATA ANALYSIS

There are many reasons why people decide to participate in sport and recreation and also many reasons why they don’t. Examine each of the following tables and complete the allocated questions.

TABLE A - Non-participants and low level participants, Sports and physical recreation - By all constraints and sex

Source: Australian Bureau of Statistics QUESTIONS

1. List the top three reasons for males to be non/low level participants in sport and physical recreation. • Insufficient time due to work/study • Not interested • Age/Too old

2. List the top three reasons for females to be non/low level participants in sport and physical recreation. • Insufficient time due to work/study • Not interested • Age/Too old

3. Cost is listed as a reason for people to be non/low level participants in sport and physical

recreation. Suggest three sports and/or recreation activities a person could participate in for little or no cost.

• Walking/Bushwalking • Running/Jogging • Swimming

QUESTIONS

1. What is the main motivation for both males and females to participate in sport and physical recreation?

Health/Fitness

2. List four benefits of this motivation.

• Maintain a healthy weight range • Strengthen muscles • Increases life expectancy • Prevention of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular related conditions (heart attack,

stroke etc.) • Maintain healthy bones and joints • Reduce chances of developing osteoporosis • Reduce anxiety and depression • Improve concentration • Improve self-esteem

3. How do the motivations for males and females differ? Explain why you think this may be the

case. • Females are more motivated by weight loss than males as females are often more body

conscious than males

• Females are also more motivated by health/fitness and wellbeing than males, this may

be because females are more health conscious than males. • Males are more motivated by competition and challenge than females, this may be

because males have higher testosterone levels, a higher desire to win, potential peer pressure and social expectations.

4. What is the lowest motivation for participation for both males and females? Why do you think

this might be the case?

• Transport – as it is mainly due to necessity not so much a want or drive to participate in sport and physical recreation.

SPORT & RECREATION INDUSTRY – QUESTIONS How much do you know?

1. Briefly explain the difference between formal and informal sport and recreational activities.

‘Formal’ is when the activity is structured, planned and officiated. These may be competitions, tournaments or structured classes run at a gym at a specific time. ‘Informal’ is less structured; the score may not be kept. People may participate in informal activity for health and social reasons.

2. How does participation in the sport and recreation industry assist Australia’s economy?

Many Australians spend money on sports equipment, apparel and services every year. This stimulates the Australian economy.

3. Why do you think the fitness industry has grown so much in the last decade?

Lifestyle changes, the growing number of health problems, education and promotion of the importance of exercise. The increasing use of technology making us less active therefore increasing people’s perception for the need to exercise regularly.

4. Identify four physical health benefits of participating in sport and recreation. • Maintain a healthy weight range • Strengthen muscles • Increases life expectancy • Prevention of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular related conditions (heart attack, stroke

etc.) • Maintain healthy bones and joints • Reduce chances of developing osteoporosis

5. Besides physical benefits, how can participating in sport and recreation improve other aspects of your health? • Reduce anxiety and depression • Improve concentration • Improve self-esteem • Social outlet

6. Why does Australia provide an excellent opportunity to take part in outdoor recreational activities?

Various terrains and landscapes provide opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sport and recreation activities (ie: bushland, surf coast, mountain ranges).

7. Identify four outdoor recreation activities that you have or might participate in.

• Bushwalking • Mountain climbing • Orienteering • Skiing

8. How are sports facilities funded in Australia? They are generally funded through the Federal (Commonwealth), State/Territory and Local Governments. These are often community run facilities eg: leisure centres run by the local council. Sports facilities can also be privately owned/commercial eg: privately owned gyms, sports complexes.

9. Why do you think governments might see sport and recreation as a priority area for funding?

If people are healthy ie: participating in sport and recreational activities, they are less likely to get sick. These people are less likely to need medications and health services funded by the government. Sport and recreation is a preventative health care approach.

Walking for exercise also does not require any expensive equipment, facilities or memberships. It can be done anywhere anytime, irrespective of location.

3. How do the most popular sports for males and females differ?

Females participate in yoga and netball as part of their top ten, neither appear for males. Males participate in cricket and soccer. Neither of these sports appear for females. Golf is much more popular with males than females

4. Classify all of the sport and recreational activities into each of the four sectors of the Sport and Recreation industry.

5. Why might some sport and recreation activities overlap between the four sectors?

The sectors may overlap depending on where the sport and recreational activity takes place, whether it is ‘formal’ or ‘informal’ and whether it is played for competition, community enjoyment and/or social reasons.

ORIENTATION CHAPTER - REVIEW QUESTIONS

1. How do sport and recreation differ?

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary. Sample response:

Sport is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. Sport is competitive and formal; rules and regulations are followed. Whereas recreation is “activity done for enjoyment when one is not working”. Recreation is not competitive; it is done for fun, enjoyment, relaxation, health benefits and social interaction with family and/or friends.

2. In your own words, give a snapshot of Australia’s participation rates in sport and recreation. Use the answers from O-Activity 1 and O-Activity 4 to assist you.

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary. Sample response: Most people in Australia take part in sport and recreation activities for health/fitness benefits and enjoyment. The most popular activity for both males and females is walking for exercise.

3. Describe three benefits of being physically active.

Examples of benefits students may have chosen to describe. • Maintain a health weight • Assists with sleep • Improved bone density which can prevent osteoporosis • Reduced risk of developing diabetes • Decreases blood pressure and cholesterol • Improved mental health

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary. Sample responses:

Improved mental health - Being active also benefits a person’s social and mental health through allowing them to socially interact with others and through increasing confidence and self-esteem. When a person exercises their body releases endorphins. These endorphins make a person feel happy, positive and good about themselves, which can reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. Assists with sleep - Sleep is essential for the body to function properly. When we sleep our body repairs itself. Sleep also allows time for your brain to wind down and prepare for the next day. Without adequate sleep a person may feel confused, and be unable to concentrate and pay attention. When a person exercises they make their body feel tired which assists them to fall asleep and have a higher quality of sleep.

Prevent osteoporosis - Regular exercise enables a person to keep their bodies strong through maintaining muscle mass and enhancing bone development. This can prevent the onset of osteoporosis which can lead to fragile and easily broken bones.

4. List the four sectors of the sport and recreation industry.

• Sport • Fitness • Outdoor recreation • Community recreation

5. Briefly describe each sector and provide an example.

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary. Sample responses:

• The sport sector includes both formal and informal activity pursued for exercise or pleasure.

It includes sporting competitions, tournaments and unofficial sport played between friends in the park, eg: five-against-five soccer, or a hit of tennis on a local court.

• The fitness sector includes exercise completed with the aim of achieving fitness, health

benefits or improved sports performance. For example, personal training, going to the gym, resistance training or boot camp.

• The outdoor recreation sector includes any activities completed outdoors such as rock

climbing, bushwalking and skiing. This sector includes all facilities and employees involved in running or facilitating outdoor activities, including campsites, national parks, tours, camps and gardens.

• The community recreation sector includes retail outlets relating to sport and recreation, for

example Rebel Sport, Sports Co and Athlete’s Foot. It also includes formal and informal community-based sport and recreation. Formal recreation includes sport and recreation competitions and participants who generally take their sport seriously. Informal recreation includes sport and recreation played for social reasons, for example, having a game of soccer with a group of mates at the local park.

6. What are the top three employment areas of the sport and recreation industry?

Fitness instructors (21,514 persons), greenkeepers (11,345 persons), and swimming coaches/instructors (10,281 persons).

7. There are many volunteers in the sport and recreation industry. Why do you think this is the case?

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary. Sample response:

There are many volunteers in the sport and recreation industry as many parents who have children participating often volunteer to assist in roles such as coaches, club officials and umpires.

8. Define the term ‘volunteer’.

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary.

Sample response:

A volunteer can be defined as a person who takes on a role, carries out tasks and/or provides services for individuals or community organisations without financial compensation.

9. List three roles that a volunteer might take on in the sport and recreation industry.

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary.

Sample responses:

• Coaches • Umpires/referees • Runners • Water people • Trainers • First aid attendants.

10. Why do you think many volunteers come from families with kids?

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary.

Sample response: Families with kids often volunteer as they are already at the sport or recreational activity watching their children so it is easy for them to pitch in and assist with the running of the activity. Many parents also love to be involved and contribute to their children’s activities.

11. List three post-secondary courses you could do if you were interested in employment in the sport

and recreation industry.

Teacher discretion needed, as student answers will vary.
