    The gross similarity index of 43% is reduced to allow for the similarity

    contributed by the cover sheet. The net similarity is 34% (still too high to

    be acceptable).

    Use high quality references. Wikipedia or blogs may be useful to gain a

    quick insight, but the quality of the content will be uncertain as it is often

    Some Key Points

    Interpret Similarity Index

    High/Low SI does not automatically indicates high/low level of plagiarism

    Judgement needs to be made based on content knowledge

    SI does effectively set off alarms, raising the concern and calling for attention/correction

    Innocent/Coincidental Matches

    Common phrases and set forms used in essays or reports

    Direct quotations

    References or bibliographical materials

    Resubmitted report after revision

    Similarities caused by these matches need to be

    excluded or ignored in assessment

    Confidentiality implications

    All submitted files will be kept by Turnitin in its repository

    Identities of the files can be revealed during the originality check and in the Originality Report

    Need to exercise some caution and prevention measures on confidential materials before

    submission to Turnitin
