ROTHSCHILD’S GIRAFFE

How long they are:2.2m.

What a group of them are called:They are solitary creatures which means they prefer to live alone and not in groups.

How long they live (Life Span):14 years.

Where they live:In grasslands (known as savanna) and rainforests of Central and South America.

What they eat:Ants and termites.

What they do:Giant Anteaters have no teeth and eat by flicking their very long 60cm tongue into termite mounds, then slurping up all the insects that stick to it.

When they go to sleep, they fold their long, bushy tails over themselves to keep warm and stay camouflaged.

How babies are born:Giant Anteater mummies give birth to only one baby at a time (known as a pup). They carry the pup around on their backs to keep it safe.

Why they are endangered:The biggest threat to giant anteaters is the loss of their habitat (where they live) and the illegal trade for their claws and thick leathery hide.

Because they live in hot, dry places, they are also in danger from wildfires because they can’t move very quickly and their coat is very flammable.

ROTHSCHILD’S GIRAFFEHow tall are they are:From 4 to 6 metres.

What a group of them are called:A herd.

How long they live (Life Span):Up to 25 years.

Where they live:Giraffes roam the African savanna.

What they eat:Leaves and buds at the top of trees, taking advantage of their very long necks and tongues.

What they do:Giraffes roam the open grasslands of the African savanna in small herds of 5 or 6, spending most of their time eating.

How babies are born:Mummy giraffes give birth standing up, which means that new baby giraffes are welcomed into the world by falling 1.5m onto the ground!

Why they are endangered:Having been forced out of its wide-ranging West African home by habitat loss, the biggest threat to the Rothschild’s Giraffe is hybridisation.

This happens when Rothschild’s Giraffes breed with other species of giraffe, leaving very few true Rothschild’s Giraffes remaining in the world.

How long they are:From 30-100cm, depending on the species.

What a group of them are called:They are solitary creatures and prefer to live alone.

How long they live (Life Span):Up to 20 years.

Where they live:4 species live in Asia and 4 species live in Africa. They usually prefer sandy soils and can be found in woodlands and savannas, within reach of water.

What they eat:Ants, termites and insects.

What they do:Pangolins are nocturnal animals and use their sense of smell to find insects at night. They spend most of the daytime sleeping curled up in a ball. They don’t have teeth and instead, use long sticky tongues to catch ants and insects.

How babies are born:Mummies from the African species usually have just one baby at a time, but the Asian species can give birth to one to three babies.

Why they are endangered:Pangolins in Asia are particularly under threat from the illegal trade in China of their scales (which is used as a medicine), their skin and their meat (which is sold for a very high price as a delicacy). In China, eating Pangolin meat is seen as a status symbol by people who want to display their wealth.
