Introduction

This plan has been written by the Board of Community Health Councils with Community Health Councils. It is part of a bigger plan about equality.

Equality means treating people fairly and making sure they have the same chances.

We have written this plan with Community Health Councils (CHCs). Our job is to make sure CHCs are being run well.

There are 7 CHCs in Wales. They represent the voice of patients in their areas. And help people have a say in their health services.

This plan is about what we will do in 2019 to 2020 to achieve the aims of our bigger plan for equality.

About this planWe have worked together with the CHCs to

make sure equality and diversity is at the centre of all our work.

Diversity means people are not all the same.

For example, people come from different backgrounds, make different choices or are good at different things.

This plan says: what our aim for equality is what our equality objectives are what we want to do in 2019-2020 to

achieve our aim and equality objectives.

Equality objectives are the important things we must do to make our work in Wales fair for everyone.

We know that certain people can be discriminated against.

Page 5

Discrimination is when you are treated badly or unfairly because of who you are.

For example because you are a man or woman. Or because you have a disability.

And we know that there can be big differences to the way people get health care. And that discrimination may lead to people:

not having the same chance to get services

not being listened to.

We want all our plans to help stop any kind of discrimination in our work.

Community Health Councils must take care of the needs of the people in their own area. This means the work of one CHC may be different to another.

Our equality plan also says how we employ people. And give the same chances to everyone.

Our staff are employed by the Powys Teaching Health Board. So we make sure we follow the Powys Teaching Health Board plans about equality.

Our aim and equality objectives

Our aim:

For everyone to be included in our work. And for everyone to have the chance to have a say about their NHS.

Our equality objectives:

Work with others to find better ways to hear from everyone. Including people who are most at risk. And may not otherwise get a say.

Change the way we work so we can reach people who get care out of hospitals. And make sure our information and services are easy to get and use.

Work with people and our partners to make sure we focus on the things that matter most. And to make sure our work makes a real difference to people.

Page 8

Work with partners old and new to have the best chances of making a difference.

Keep checking our membership is diverse. And find new ways to get different types of members. So we can represent different types of people well.

What we will do in 2019 to 2020

We have listened to what people have told us. And we have been checking our work on equality and diversity.

This has helped us decide what we should do in 2019-2020 to meet our aim for equality.

This year we will:

Continue to find volunteers from diverse groups of communities to become members.

look at new ways to get more volunteers from a diverse background.

make sure our work place is healthy and fair to new members.

Page 10

write a report on our membership. And any changes over last 3 years.

Help CHCs know what groups of people they are not good at working with. So they can do work that gets those groups of people involved.

Think about equality and diversity when planning how we reach people.

Check the diversity of the people we speak to. This includes talking to people face to face and using surveys and forms.

Keep checking the ways we use to speak to people. Check they are fair and reach lots of different types of people.

Check the diversity of the people who use our Advocacy Service.

Write a report on the people we work with. And say how we can reach more or different types of people where needed.

Check CHCs are following their duties for making sure everyone can get involved in their work.

use feedback from CHC members to check and support CHCs to be fair and equal.

Work with national organisations and groups to help CHCs be fair and equal.

work with people from the deaf/blind community to write a guide about working with deaf people.

Work with partners to write a guide for deaf people about Putting Things Right - making a complaint to the NHS.

find out what people with sight or hearing loss have to say about their care.

Make our equal pay information open to the public.

Bring trans allies into our workplace.

Trans allies is a project that helps staff support transgender people at work.

Transgender people are people who are born as one sex and want to live as the other sex. For example a person who looks like a man may feel inside like a woman.

Make sure the CHCs recruitment information helps make equal chances for people.
