NICU Developmental Care Philosophy

Developmental care promotes viewing each infant, family, and the neonatal intensive care unit in a holistic manner. Developmental care involves being observant and intuitive regarding infant and family needs, as well as modifying care, interactions, and the environment based on infant needs. It is a framework for providing care in ways that support the immediate medical stability and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of the infant.

Preface

The healthcare field is ever-changing. As new research emerges, modifications in diapering techniques should be considered. This training focuses on providing routine and emergency medical procedures for preterm infants within a developmental care context and is derived from evidence-based information.

Practices vary across neonatal intensive care units. Regardless of the practices used routine and emergency medical care can be more successful by implementing developmentally supportive practices.
