How to update your kitchen for under $1,000

This is the before picture

• Here were some of the issues:– Kitchen has 30+ year old cabinets. The white dishwasher

and range were 5+ years old. We aren’t sure of the age of the almond Refrigerator and avocado green hood. The appliances did not match.

– There was a shelf unit over the peninsula portion of the countertop.

– The tile countertops were dirty, and the front edge tiles had chips, or some were missing.

– The wall cabinets had an uneven bulkhead above them.

How we addressed these issues

• We painted the refrigerator and hood with white appliance paint so they would match the dishwasher and range.

• We took down the shelf unit to open up the kitchen.• We took off the tiles on the front edges of the

countertop and put a dark stained 2” wood trim.• We added large crown molding above the wall

cabinets to finish to the ceiling and painted it white to match the ceiling paint.

There had been some water damage….

• Sitting water caused the sink base doors to warp and had water stains.

• The dishwasher and countertop was not level

There had been some water damage….

• We bought Birch plywood and remade the sink base doors and drawer front.

• We built a brace under the cabinets to level the dishwasher and countertop

Changing the appliances

• These are the before and after pictures of the range hood. Appliance paint made it look brand new.

More on the flooding

• The flooding caused ceiling damage. The previous occupants repaired the ceiling, but it didn’t match the rest of the house.

• There was an outdated valance over the window

• Wall Cabinets had a small bulkhead above them.

More on the flooding

• We finished the ceiling to blend with the rest of the house

• We removed the valance and ran the crown molding around the sides of the wall cabinets

The other big changes

• Cabinets were cleaned inside and out with Murphy’s oil. When dry, we cleaned the outside of the cabinets with lacquer finish. Then sprayed a clear poly over them.

• We replaced the hardware with updated pulls.• Updated the kitchen light fixture• Replaced the sink and faucet• We used a commercial tile and grout cleaner for the

countertops. It was a lot of elbow grease, but got the job done.

• Ceiling and walls were repainted
