1.What are reasons for teaching speaking?

Page 4: How to Teach Speaking

There are three basic reasons:_ Firstly, speaking activities provide

rehearsal opportunities- students get lots of chances to practise real-life speaking

Page 5: How to Teach Speaking

- Secondly, speaking taks in which students try to use any or all of the language they know provide feedback for both teacher and students.Everyone can see how well they are doing, both how successful they are, and also what language problems they are experience.

Page 6: How to Teach Speaking

Finally, the more students have opportunities to activate the various elements become. As a result, students gradually become autonomuos language users. This means that they will be able to use words and phrases fluently without very much conscious thought.

WHAT TEACHERS DO DURING A SPEAKING ACTIVITY? Getting involved or participate in the

activity with students. It’s probably better than to stand back, watch and listen what’s going on.

Teacher will have to intervene in some way if the activity is not going smoothly.

Teacher should give more ideas for students to discuss.

Prompting is necessary but teacher should do it sympathetically and sensitively.

4. HOW SHOULD TEACHERS CORRECT SPEAKINGTry to get their pronunciation exactly

right but should not interrupt their conversations

Note down their common mistakes and correct after all.

Don’t mention about who makes those mistakes.

Listening and watching then give feedback later.

Page 10: How to Teach Speaking

Good speaking activities can and should be extremely engaging for the students. If they areall participating fully-and if the teacher has set up the activity properly and can then give sympathetic and useful feedback-they will get tremendous satisfaction from it.
