Taking Notes

• First, read a section of the text and write down important things to know such as dates, events, or people.

• Then, write a note about what you read and then write a keyword, something that would remind you of what you read.

Writing a Summary

• When you have finished taking all of your notes, write a summary of the notes in the bottom section of the page.

• The summary does not have to be too long, maybe just one or two sentences.

Hints & Tips

• Try not to make a note out of everything you read. Only put what is relevant or important and put them into concise notes.

• Put names, dates, and places and describe them.

• Try to keep your keyword one word and as close as a summary for your note.

Note Taking Approaches

• Method A- Main Points

• Write a main idea a teacher is discussing

• Underline it

• Then indent the next lines

• Write only the important things the teacher talks about relating to the topic

• Method B- Idea Mapping

• Appeals to those who learn best by seeing or when your teacher seems to skip around.

• You create a map that shows relationships among ideas

• Method C- Cornell Note Taking

• Helps you to organize your notes

• Helps put key ideas into your own words

• Helps you create a complete set of notes to use when studying for a test

• Helps you commit material to memory

Task• Work with the person seated beside you. Compare

notes for a recent class with your partner. Based on your observations, write the following journal entry (#6):

• How are your notes the same? How are they different? How could your notes be better? Based on what you have learned today about note taking, what are some specific, measurable, action oriented and achievable things you would like to do to improve your notes? Minimum- 5 sentences.

• 2 Short or intermediate term goals

• 7-10 Journal entries reflecting upon, monitoring progress your success or lack of success in meeting these goals. A Self Analysis entry at the end reflecting on all goals.
