How to Stop Flying Fingers (L#105)

Your Action Plan For this lesson I’m going to keep the action plan short and sweet, unlike my normal essays ;)

As you’ll see in the lesson, this is a simple exercise and you can start applying it straight away. I’d recommend finding a few different fingering combinations to start with, and then playing around with each of those for around for 10-20 minutes each practice session you have.

As I say in the lesson, the key to this exercise is starting slow. You must give your brain the chance to start relearning the movements it has been doing automatically up until this point. Technique changes are tough as they can take quite a bit of time to feel natural. The great thing about them is that if you do something for long enough with the correct movements your brain will alter the message it’s sending to your hand. In time it will start to happen automatically, so it just comes down to making that same movement over and over until it sinks in.

For me a technique change like this will take up to 8 weeks to feel natural, and sometimes a little more. This is based on practicing a specific technique change for around 20 minutes per day 5 days a week.

Don’t look for results too early. Just know that it will happen, you’ve just got to be willing to put in the work. Unfortunately out of every 100 people that watch this lesson, I estimate that only 10 will actually do it, and do it long enough to make a difference. That’s just the way life is. What you need to decide is whether you’re going to be one of the 10, or one of the 90. I’m hoping you decide to be one of the 10 ;)

As always, see you in the shed,

Scott
